Impressions/observations during the test drive:
The exterior design of the pre-facelift Montero Sport has some sporty touches on it such as its shape of the headlights and overall lines. Moving over into the inside, the materials are good quality which gives the impression that this is a vehicle that will last long and may be taken to different places. One of the best things in the inside is the pair of steering column-mounted paddle shifters, which add to the sporty feeling of this vehicle. The height of the center console, being a little bit high also gives a sporty feel to the interior since it makes it more driver-oriented, like a cockpit. Overall, the interior space is good here but the 2017 Toyota Fortuner G has a little bit more of it as observed during the test drive, as well as admitted by the owner. In regards to this specific vehicle, it still feels new and well-taken care of even though it's not a brand new vehicle anymore.
Being a turbo-diesel, the engine of this truck feels punchy because of the torque being available at lower RPMs. The engine sound being audible from the inside adds to the driver engagement and to the sense of speed and power. Transferring all that power and torque to the rear wheels is an 8-speed automatic transmission which does its task smoothly enough in automatic mode and is responsive in manual mode. There is a very slight delay in manual mode, however that said delay does not impact the usability of the manual mode too much. Manual mode may be activated by pulling on one of the paddle shifters or by pulling the gear lever to the left. It may be deactivated by holding the right paddle shifter or by putting back the gear lever to D. Like the 2017 Fortuner G, the steering feedback of this vehicle is good because it is not vague. It is noticeable though, that this has more weight and feel on it. Both the accelerator and brake pedals of this vehicle respond well to driver inputs, and without any delay. The accelerator pedal has a bit more feedback compared to the Fortuner, though their brake pedals feel almost, if not totally the same. The ride comfort of this is good enough for a mid-sized ladder-framed SUV and is competitive with the 2017 Fortuner G. The suspension gives some body roll during cornering which is normal for an SUV like this. Overall, the Montero's driving dynamics feel sportier than the Fortuner's.
