He has a lot of really useful/detailed/specific 4G63 content!
Ok people it's time for an ICONIC ENGINES video of Mitsubishi's glorious 4G63! The 4G63 is such a great design that people didn't get sick of it was the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution for 9 generations. When the Lancer X got a brand new, more modern engine, everybody was totally dissapointed. They still wanted the 4G63. They didn't get sick of it after 9 generations.
But if your think that the 4G63 started it's life with the Lancer EVO you are wrong! The first car that had a 4G63 in it was a Mitsubishi Lancer, but it wasn't an evo. The first car that had a genuine 2 liter turbo 4G63 in it was the Mitsubishi Lancer EX 2000 turbo from 1981. This thing was SOHC but still a genuine 4G63 that kicked ass even back in the early 80s. It made more power than it's competitors (lancer ex 2000 turbo - 170hp, bmw 323i - 143hp) and already had a lot of the evo recipe in it. It wasn't AWD but it was a boring looking four door sedan that would kick sports car butt.
Later on the 4G63 both in turbo and naturally aspirated form would appear in a real laundry list of different cars and it's still being manufactured today. So, how much HP does a 4g63 have? Well, as you can see this thing has been in production for more almost 39 years (yet it's still being installed in some Chinese vesicles today, although these are of questionable design) so there have been many different versions and revision of the 4g63. The 4g63 in factory form it makes anywhere from 170 to 400+ horsepower hp. The 400+ hp figure belongs to the Ralliart FQ400 special edition Lancer evos. But 250-300 hp is the usual factory figure for a modern 4G63.
So what about the specs? The specs are what makes any engine great and the 4g63 has all the right ones for making power. A cast iron block with closed deck design ensures the 4g63 can take all the boost you can come up with. Beefy internals? Check! Forged steel fully counterweight crankshaft? Check! Good cylinder head design? Check! The 4g63 has it all. Another interesting feature of the 4g63 is that Mitsubishi didn't just want to impress people with the power, it wanted to the impress people with how smooth and quiet the 4g63 is at idle and how it doesn't transmit the noise vibration and harshness that a typical 4 cylinder does. So inside the block of the 4g63 we can find some balancing shafts and in the cylinder head some hydraulic valve lifters. Both of these are ok for street applications but for high horsepower builds both will likely need to go away.
The 4g63 engine has been around for a very long time so many amazing builds have appeared over the years. Since its plentiful and popular it also means that the 4G63 has an amazing aftermarket and you can build an amazing engine. 4g63 stock internals are safe and reliable up to about 400 hp and a bit more if you do your tuning right. People even build up the stock internals and turbo to 500hp but I'm pretty sure reliability and driveability starts falling off right around 500 hp. Beyond 500 hp on a 4g63 you are likely looking at forged rods and pistons, camshafts, cam gears, turbo manifolds, forged internals, and a lot more. The stock crank can stay even at 700-800hp.
Another useful thing Mitsubishi owners or anyone building a 4g63 (swap perhaps?) can make use of is the 4G64 engine. It's basically a 2.4 version of the 4g6 family of engines. The 4g64 is super plentiful and widely available and is an easy and cheap way to get more torque and increase the displacement of your 4g63/ 4g64 build.
All in all the 4g63 is definitely deserving of the ICONIC engine status! It's well made, reliable, well-designed, has a rich racing history, it's capable, has amazing torque and on top of that it has a great aftermarket and astounding power potential!

Can you do one on the KL/KLZE DOHC V6 from Mazda. I assume there will already be an "iconic engines" on the rotary and BP. Everyone already knows about those. Most overlook the KL simply because they don't know about it. But you can fit it into small engine bays and make plenty of power NA, weight is comparable to a 4 cyl. It has a similar system to T-VIS instead of VVT. Built for 8k, limited to 7500 still a 250k-300k mile engine. One of the nice things about it, more than B18C power for around $1k . The limit is mostly the transmissions that bolt up to it. NA with the right ECU this 2.5l can match a WRX in an MX-6 or a Probe GT. I would like to someday swap one into a MKII MR2. Do the exhaust right and the sound of a KL is one of the best. Some nutter put one in a 944, turn it up! kzread.info/dash/bejne/fGtlsqVspLfQZcY.html

Mivec is just a marketing name. The earliest mivec on the 4G9x is the same as the original VTEC as is the mivec on the 6A12 and the 6G72 and 6G74 The mivec on the 4G63 is VVT on just the intake cam and the mivec on the 6G75 is yet another system but just on the intake cam.

1magnit the VTEC we know as the "Kicked in Yo" version is definitely the one that has lift + everything else. So comparable to VVTL-i but with both intake and exhaust (I dont remember if the 2ZZ had both but the naming schemes were always weird on this so...). Although MIVEC is even harder to distinguish as VTEC or VVTL-i systems, it never touches cam lift which brings it totally apart from the other manufacturers. Oh wait did the 4B11T have lift? I dont remember

Crankwalk was multifactorial. The 1st gen 4G63T had oil squirters for the pistons. The 2nd gen changed the design with the addition of a valve to the oil squirters. They were to open only at a certain rpm/load. That valve would fail. And thus you'd get low oil pressure at idle due what was essentially an internal oil leak at the pressure side of the system. Over time this would prematurely wear the thrust bearings. Usually more on the side that was being pressed on by the actuation of the clutch. Which brings to the other main reason. Which was aftermarket clutch assemblies. The aftermarket solution at the time was usually to use high pressure pressure plates. I.E. the ACT 2600lb clutch kit. At 2600 lbs of force everytime you shifter you were putting a lot of load on the crankshaft by way of the diaphragm. This combined with failing oil squirters would cause thrust bearings to fail often. Obviously lack of normal maintenance would cause this too. But the 1st gen engine simply didn't have this problem because it just didn't have that oil squirter design. Crankwalk was real. And it was a stupid design change to an otherwise bulletproof engine. Did it happen to every 2nd 4G63T? No. But mostly because when it did it was lack of maintenance and or modification. But nevertheless it was a flaw in the design. It was a failure point that was easily preventable.

Also 1st gen engines are referred to as the 6 bolt. And 2nd gens as the 7 bolt. Named after the fact that 1st gens had 6 fasteners for the flywheel to crankshaft assembly. The 2nd gens 7.

The guys who tuned my evo 9 were TRYING to blow up their shop 8mr (as they had a built 2.3 ready to drop in) and wanted to see what the stock block could handle. With only head studs said they were running 45 psi with no failures.

There are tons of 4g63 from gallant vr4 halfcut transplanted and 4g63 evo1,2,3 into proton wira/satria/putra( lancer, mirage, lancer coupe) in malaysia. Mitsubishi engines had a big fan base in Malaysia, 4g63 were popular, along with 4g92,4g93 especially mivec versions of 4g92. Some people used 4g92 mivec head on 93 block, having the rev and highyflowing head on a block with same bore but bigger stroke. 4g15 were commonly found too. By what I meant popular, does not mean everyone is using it, but it was more of a topic during car conversations. And plenty of proton wira fully converted to evo 3 in Malaysia. Cheers

We got them in the USA on the mirage and dodge/plymouth colt, Eagle summit cars, the 4g15 was also used in the early Hyundai Excel and Scoupe, vary reliable fuel efficient engines, I would get 35-42mpg freeway, most of the time 37mpg on my tune, but they are actually a bit harsher then the 4g63t engines, if we got the dohc head in the US that would have been cool and might have made a smoother setup but we only got sohc heads on the 4g15 here in the states.
