Lyrics:
I cry at the start of every movie
I guess ‘cause I wish I was making things too
But I’m working for the knife
I used to think I would tell stories
But nobody cared for the stories I had about
No good guys
I always knew the world moves on
I just didn’t know it would go without me
I start the day high and it ends so low
‘Cause I’m working for the knife
I used to think I’d be done by 20
Now at 29 the road ahead appears the same
Though maybe at 30 I’ll see a way to change
That I’m living for the knife
I always thought the choice was mine
And I was right but I just chose wrong
I start the day lying and end with the truth
That I’m dying for the knife

@@turyabhatkar true, but there's love and then there's... sorry, just not my cup of tea. I find Mitski's work so appealing because of its economy, how direct, raw and emotional it is. No gush. I don't enjoy the hyperbole here and find it strangely at odds with Mistki's art. Happy that others are happy, and glad that others love this, but the tenor of this is not for me, that's all. This song feels like doing something over and over again and it becoming repetitive and boring. Like you no longer have a say in what happens because if you choose to quite, all of your hard work would equate to nothing. That you would be nothing. You can’t escape the personal hell that was created for you so you settle on what you have now and try to make it enough, it NEEDS to be enough because what are you doing if it isn’t? You’re living life but are you truly alive? You work til you die, even if it’s something you love doing. Eventually, that too will become a necessity, something you need to do rather then something you love. Because there is no room for love in this industry, money rules supreme and we all die the same. We are all essentially, working for the Knife.

I agree and also it could be seen as a artist envying and wanting to create but since it's a subjective thing there could only be so little value in it and it could just be a constant of envying other people and working yourself dry until you can finally succeed and see a way to change even if it means letting go of your humanity as long as you can survive

the great thing about music is that, it can be whatever you want it to be. this song could potentially be about so many things, like capitalism, growing up and time passing, not being happy with your career or life, about doing so much and nobody caring, being and artist and having to constantly write about pain for other people to be happy, your dreams not coming true, about really seeing what being an adult is like. i love mitski

“I start the day high, and it ends so low” This is talking about the constant circle that we are entrapped in. We work like assassins that assassinate ourselves. We beat ourselves up so much until we can’t take it, without even knowing it’s ourselves that we are harming. We emotionally stab ourselves every day. We are working for the knife.

I use this song to cope. I had a true taste of love. Intimate…after such hardships…it was like magic…a miracle to me…I chose wrong so many times when I thought I was choosing right…so I lost it. And it’s gone. He’s not even dead. Mental illness…trauma from childhood…it bleeds into every aspect of life and the pursuit of happiness. I was so understanding for him but he couldn’t be for me…he’s not even a jerk it’s just we couldn’t see each other cuz we both have no money. Can’t see each other. Yet we have a whole kid together…this is too cruel. The world really does go on without my love story getting played out…the truth really is that I’m dying each time for another taste of love. Meaningless life is without it. Idek why.

I recently started a new job. I'm 17, so i work 10 hours a day, and then at night i study. I'm also an artist and i really wish i could do what i love, but not only i don't have the time for what I love, i need money, so i exchange my time, sacrifice what's left of my teen years for a little bit of money. It hurts to lose all my motivation to make art, to go out and see the world. And it hurts even more to know all my efforts are worthless. Working harder won't make the world wait for me. It will discard me when i'm too broken to keep it up. Thank you mitski for making a song so many of us can relate. It brings comfort to my soul knowing that i'm not the only one who feels heavy because of my job.
