The Whaleoid seems less like a toroidal blade, and more like a regular blade with the center cut out. I'd be interested to see how a design with the tubercles but no cutouts would compare.

Yeah, I have a strong feeling that it's almost impossible to design a good toroidial blade without using fluid dynamic simulations and a lot of knowledge and experience in aerodynamics, which would explain why no KZreadrs have managed to make a good one.

You are correct. The design was only inspired by the toroid solution. It was not intended to be a full toroid. The top and the lower part of the loop have a different angle of attack. I haven't pre-tested it. This was just an idea, but now it's got my attention. :D

The reason it's slightly worse to be pointy is that at re-entry velocities, you are beyond supersonic velocities and literally smashing the air apart as you hit it. Being "Rounder" or "Blunter" creates a sort of air dam in front of the object, pushing the air-smashing distance a bit further away, making things overall safer for the object. The downside is you end up with something like the Space Shuttle, which had an absolutely terrible glide slope due to all of the drag at supersonic and sub-sonic velocities. There's not much point talking about drag when you are hypersonic, because no matter what you do, it's going to be there in a very annoying amount.

  • @jblob5764

    @jblob5764

    6 ай бұрын

Exactly, a blunt edge forms a cushion of air ahead of the leading edge. If you had a sharp edge that was making direct contact with hypersonic air the surface temperature would soar extremely fast well beyond the melting temperature of anything we would be using. The shuttle is a great example. It's a terrible "plane" because it lacks a lot of lift, but it has to be that shape to have any hope of surviving re-entry. Same reason the Soviet knockoff looked almost identical, you can't out design the laws of physics you just have to do the best you can with your materials

From what I've heard, it really doesn't-they'll start sending you sponsorship offers as soon as they're aware you exist, which will probably be before any remotely reputable company has heard of you. It really only marks a turning point if they're the very first sponsorship you ever take. If you've been doing them for a significant length of time, it's more a sign that you've gotten desperate or that you did something to make all the other sponsors not want to associate with you anymore.

The longer the hull, the faster the boat. If those fins were shaped to be rounded at the front, and pointy at the end, passing the edge of the blade, it might cause "lift" along the edge of the "hull" as lower pressure systems are created toward the back of the blade, this might cause it to drag air back along the blade faster. ... or something.

Normies are wrong, most launch vehicles do better with a blunt nose during ascent because an optimised rocket trajectory usually spends a long time subsonic, and the optimum nose for subsonic flight is blunt (see almost any subsonic aircraft). Pointy noses work supersonically (see Concorde) though.

One of the reasons whales have tubercles is to change the chord of their flippers along the length. This reduces the stall speed and increases the stall angle, so the flippers are useful with more extreme manoeuvres but also good at cruising. Tubercles are also good at catching vortexes and sticking them to the flipper, further increasing the stall angle. Planes usually achive the same effect with tapered and twisted wings, but some also use *fences* and *dog teeth* to achieve similar effects without needing to manufacture lots of 3D curves. Fences are actually quite like the Rocket Ship fan (and the tubercle-shaped leading edge too). Most of these things are to extend the speeds/angles at which wings/flippers are still useful though. A steady-state system like a turbine might not benefit too much.

I would also be interested in saying if the room temperature has any noticeable differences in performance. As you know warmer air rises easier and cooler air stays lower to the ground. Due to the atomic structure of the more free flowing warmer air and the more densely packed cooler air, technically you might have variations depending on which season of the month or year you tested them in. It would be nice to have a professional testing space.

It would be interesting if you spoke a little about how you managed to print these

I think Pressuriser would have worked slightly better if it had a shroud or some sort of cowling around the front, given how much air it was throwing back out towards the front.

Just a random idea, but i wonder if it would look good if you would put a mirror to see the blades at the side view of the smoke test. (I know you also show it from that angle)

Do you still have that old ender 7 because I will take it if you can’t get it to work. Why have some broken printer taking up space 😉

Man...that smoke test of the pressurizer though, did you see the smoke behind? I wonder if maybe it's static pressure is superior... Could we start getting a smoke test showing with/without radiator? Cuz if they're better for radiators it's good to know for those of us who do liquid cooling.

I think it's "spoah-kee" star, not "spooky". Like it's spoked, like spokes. Spoki!!! Man, I have to say I really enjoy when these fan review vids feel longer - more talk about the fans themselves before going into the various tests that are involved. Sometimes the fan showdowns felt a little abrupt and rushed here and there - maybe it was just me though :P

I think spoki is supposed to be pronounced like pokey with a S not spooki. Lol. Great vid as always. Keep it up!

Redo the whale ode with the bumps just on the actual leading edge of both leading edges of the toroidal. Also delete that last outside on the leeding edge whale bump it's clearly in the taper off of the fan blade.

Sorry to say but they are not toroidal blades as what was being experimented with. They are just flat blades with a hole in the middle! The blades should have a “twist” towards the tips.
