I would not be surprised if what a lot of folks are seeing as "stagnation" and a "mopey, angsty eyesore" is just another version of certain audience members projecting not their desires, but themselves onto Misty. Because that's why I don't like to tell people about my own problems; I tend to see myself as more of a "stagnant, mopey, angsty eyesore." And one thing about people who don't much like themselves; they tend to REALLY not like seeing what they see as themselves reflected back at them.

That’s probably because her story was already completed in MYM. Her facing Opaline, getting her cutie mark, and finding her family were all already accomplished. All that’s been happening since is just her sometimes reading a random book and seeing everyone treat her badly as Abby brings up.

While I may disagree on a couple minor points regarding her early writing in both shows, the bottom line (and everything else) is right on the money, and I completely agree 100%. Misty is a character that deserves so much more compassion and love from fans and we as an audience need to treat her as you said, not like a “mopey, angsty eyesore,” but as a character who is constantly evolving and changing for the better. Her experiences make her who she is, and her empathy makes her unique as a pony. She is not a poorly written character who is stale or bland, but rather a dynamic character with a definitive arc and well-defined personality. And it’s time people start treating her as such. She has definitive agency, and to me, her writing is some of the best this generation has to offer. What can I say except, even though I have my own video on the topic still in the works, I probably couldn’t say the conclusion better if I tried. Your analysis is very compelling, I gotta give you serious props for that. You even got me thinking about some of my own perspectives towards her, and I gotta agree with your stance towards the overall hypocritical fan reception. People will just take any excuse to hate on whatever aspect of this generation they can think of, and it’s disheartening to think about the lack of genuine respect some people can have towards these types of characters. This was well worth the wait, and I hope that both our videos help clam the Misty haters up for good. You did a phenomenal job with this. :)

As a narcissistic parental abuse survivor I feel like MYM did a lot of the good lifting and later TYT including S2 has Misty learning how to really be free and socialize and I can relate because its not as easy as it seems and it takes time and help from others and Im still recovering from it. I think TYT has the right idea but has fallen back to when Misty first joined the cast and I think that the issue they found themselves in. Hit send by accident lol. I think the writers have the right idea and they spread them out pretty well from one another and the episodes are different enough that do a great job of exploring her struggles but I think it would be cool if Misty got to have breaks from it cause I love that IDW gives her stuff to discover outside of her dealing with recovering so a nice balance would be amazing to see.

On one hand, I feel that a lot of people miss the point of Misty's depiction back in Chapter 2 and in pre-Chapter 4 Tell Your Tale. She was presented as a clutzy (But still mostly competent) antagonist, and not as much as her own person at first, because we were meant to think that Misty would fulfill the typical villain sidekick role until they would begin to display more of her personality and eventually her struggle by the end of said chapter. You know, give us a preview and eventually something to enjoy, before we understand her struggles. If you want to compare Misty's treatment to how people may romanticize victims, I would say that this was meant to show Misty as a character to intiially latch onto before she becomes more important to the narrative and become a character we're actually supposed to care about. Make Your Mark is a serialized show, but Tell Your Tale is (Or at least, was at first) an episodic show, and we got to get to know her and see her beyond the mask she puts on, as we would with anyone in real life. I have spoken online with plenty of people in similar situations to Misty, and I will admit it: I am guilty of having a savior complex, or at least, I used to. I do hold onto fantasies and hope for ideals, but as I've gotten older and more mature, I've done my best to try to hear people out for who they are and not just what they may be going through, and try to just listen and not jump straight to assistance, as to not rob them of their agency, as you said. Or at least, I try, including with those I really care about. I've been fortunate to not see too much of this view on Misty in the fandom, but I do feel that if you are going to bring it up, you could highlight some examples of this behavior, without us having to just take your word for it. This has just been my two cents on this video.

I completely agree with you on that. I feel the same way in regard to Misty’s Chapter 2 portrayal, and it all makes sense in retrospect when taking her entire arc into consideration. It is sad that most people can’t see that. But I don’t really let it bother me too much as I’m already fully aware that Addy and I disagree on Misty’s portrayal in that chapter. Ultimately, it doesn’t take away from the message of the video for me, that Misty is a well-written character that is constantly developing in positive ways.

This video definitely gave me a lot to think about. I think I don’t like Misty, but for the wrong reasons. I really want to understand what is the actual struggle that I’m having with her overall character. Maybe there’s something I’m missing or misunderstanding, but I’m hoping to take my time as I’m working on my video that’s about Misty. Thanks, Addy. ❤

Thanks for making this video, even if I don't fully get behind a couple of minor points. Misty's not always perfect, and she definitely hasn't always been treated the best, especially in earlier Tell Your Tale(*cough* Sparky's Sick *cough*). But it has gotten better over time. And while I admittedly am one of the people who does enjoy her cute mannerisms, it is NOT the only reason I love Misty so much. She grows as a character and that's what really makes her interesting to me. Btw, I have seen your review on the latest TYT episode. And while absolutely did not agree with it, this video did make me understand your reasoning a lot better. As I always say to myself: If I don't agree, then I should at least try to understand.

I think there are two conflicting message in you video: "If our focus is entirely in someone's vulnerability and pain we are discarding her actual personality" and "Folks in the fandom and writing staff alike seems to dismissed her pained past". I don't know if I should feel bad for Misty or not, because either way you are saying it's wrong. In my personal opinion, we should not celebrate her pain, showing more scenes of her suffering, doesn't "acknowledge" the situation. In any case, What I feel that is omitted, and it's actually the best trait of Misty, it's her resilience, her ability to come back for a painful and traumatic situation to a healthier, normal life. The fact that she is "just another" of the characters, it's proof of that, and she constantly remembers and uses her own experiences as compass to help others. Phrases "I know how it feels" and "I felt that too" are common openers for her to give advise using her empathy. According to her behavior, from the beginning of both series, and her current state, I can safely say, she has a "Sensitive" personality according to the Heptagram Matrix, she is positive and pasive (Meaning that she prefers to wait and listen rather than act and talk) and they usually takes jobs to be near people and help them. "Is perceived as a stingy eye sore" - I honestly haven't head anyone calling her that, or even suggesting than idea. Perhaps you should take a rest from Twitter, that's a bad place. I enjoyed your video, thank you for the time and effort you put into this.

Coming from someone who’s been emotionally abused by my mother, I can see myself a lot in Misty, being very socially awkward, having a tough time making friends, and having certain preferences. As for the ladder, I feel like the first time G5 tackled that it was done really well, with Misty telling her father she prefers to make tea with her dad than a bigger event like singing in front of an audience. However, I feel like the writers of TYT lost sight of that, with how Sunny and the girls don’t fully respect her privacy and are too loud around her (yeah I know they gave her that curtain, but they still invade her privacy at the end) her family not respecting her feelings over not enjoying the family camping trip, and her anxiety making her feel like she’s wrong for not wanting to ride roller coasters and the writers making it seem like it’s something to be cured. It sucks that TYT lost sight of what made Misty arguably the most unique character in G5. In G4, it always bothered me how introverts like Twilight, Moondancer, and Luster Dawn were framed for being wrong when there’s nothing wrong with being that an introvert, so long as they felt comfortable with that choice, which they certainly did. But just when MYM finally got the memo right with how they handled Misty, TYT began to treat Misty as if she was wrong for being herself. Hopefully future episodes won’t continue this mistake.

Honestly, I have been one of those people who has resented the show--mostly Tell Your Tale--rethreading old ground with her. But my issue with that has led to do with her own character writing and more to do with the show as a whole. Yes, you're completely right in that Misty's trauma with Opaline is trauma that is defining, and is realistically and expectantly gonna mark her for life. But in terms of the storytelling itself, I was just getting frustrated with just how much development Misty was getting and how it all seemed to come at the expense of The Mane 5--the characters I actually came to see the shows for because I fell in love with them in A New Generation. This is a problem I've had since *at least* Chapter 4--where there was an incredible nosedive to the character writing of The Mane 5, all while Misty's was only getting better. So to see her arc with Opaline be done and see Misty *still* get more meaningful characterization than Hitch, or Izzy, or Sunny, or the rest of The Mane 5, was so goddamn frustrating. I haven't seen Tell Your Tale in a while, but in terms of character development I genuinely think I haven't missed anything in regards to those characters. If the show gave character development to Misty *and* The Mane 5 that would've been one thing, but they don't, even with Misty's story practically being done there's still no balance in the character screentime. Chapter 2 was able to focus on everyone equally, what the fuck happened.

Opaline doesn’t do it out of love for Misty though. She only does it because she feels obligated to because she needs to keep Misty under control. There’s even a scene where Opaline threatens Misty by saying that without Opaline, she would have nothing. No family, no home, and no cutie mark.
