    I'd thought about making a MiSTer in a cartridge format with some sort of custom connector/interface so I could easily move the hardware from one type of device to another. This is starting to get into a price point where owning multiple would be a practical option.

    I'm not really interested in a pure clone of the DE-10 nano board for the Mister, however I do understand that this will allow more people to get into FPGA gaming, so in that sense we all win from having more options available. What I think could be a lot more interesting though is if these developers could create something like a DE-10 nano plus board with some added improvements, such as increased memory bandwidth to allow a fully developed N64 core. Would something like this even be possible? The possibility of a mister handheld is also very exciting.

    I don’t think the mars project is vaporware. The group did mention it would be shown off in June. I think a mister+tink4k is a better combo for me considering I use a lot of original hardware as well still. The MARS is going to be a tough sell for folks(myself included) unless they manage to get some more advanced cores that aren’t possible on mister(Naomi immediately comes to mind)

  • @BERNDSBG

    @BERNDSBG

    28 күн бұрын

    @@sneakingelephantThe whole point of Mars is that it will get systems running that will not be possible with MISTer. If you don't want or need the later Midway arcades, the Cave CV1000, DC + Atomiswave + Naomi and the more beefed up PSX based arcades (ZN2, Taito G-Net), there is simply no need for Mars or Replay2 at all. (in the case of Replay2 I see no point in getting it if there aren't any cores to make use of it). I am a shmup Junkie and there is simply no way and no price to not buy it, if I can play Dogyuun, Batsugun (Toaplan2), Air Gallet (Cave), Brave Blade (ZN1), Psyvariar and Shikigami no Shiro (G-Net) and Ketsui, DDP DoJ (CV 1000) then. Leave alone those on the DC and on NAOMI.

    I bought my Pre-Built MiSTer that had the DE-10 Nanoboard in it from MiSTer Addons only a few months ago (while I first learned about it from Avalanche Reviews when he covered the first Silent Hill on his channel, it was YOUR videos were the final push I needed to jump into the MiSTer project, Mr. Esoterica), and I've been very pleased with it so far. Its easily become my favorite way to play my entire line of Gameboys (original, GBC and GBA) and Sega Saturn, because the scaling options make the games look crisp and clean while also offering unparalleled compatibility that I wouldn't get with software emulation unless you use a monster PC setup, but even then it still isnt perfect, especially in the case of the Saturn. I've got similar stories of unreliable software emulation to tell with the N64 as well, which are (mostly) now being resolved with the MiSTer as well, so that just makes me love the MiSTer even more. I don't regret my purchase of the pre-configured DE-10 in the slightest, but I too would love to see this clone of the DE-10 do everything its promising to do and take off after being released to the general market, because as you've been saying it'll make it a lot easier for new people to get into FPGA gaming and potentially bring in new people to help work on the project directly and democratize things, which is a definite positive in my book. While I'd rather see a true successor to the DE-10 that the MiSTer project could migrate towards that could give the project better hardware to work with at a similar price range to what we have right now (I hope to live to see full 6th gen console compatibility on FPGA hardware someday, since that is the golden wra of console gaming for me, but I know that is years off from now), I COULD see myself buying one of these clone boards and using it for a project or two. But I most certainly would kill to have a portable version of the MiSTer that could do what the DE-10 currently can - if I could stick a DE-10 or a clone equivalent into a clamshell design of some kind that is both comfortable and offers a full basic controller setup (think Retroid Pocket Flip), I'd line up for it in a heartbeat!

    My first MiSTer had the HDMI port die.. probably a stray static discharge.. so I just bought a replacement DE-10 for the full 250 euros 🥲 stillI can use the old board with analog IO and hopefully soon the new v8.1 analog IO that supports 24bit, since that is what I needed the HDMI for. But these clones make me happy so I can also make a 'travel' mister with only HDMI, one USB controller and a slim & sturdy case. Then I'll have three MiSTer stations: one at my PC corner with a 31KHz VGA Monitor for vintage computer cores with keyboard and mouse, one at my TV corner with two consumer TVs, one horizontal and one vertical for arcade SHMUPs with an assorted collection of SNACs and light guns and one for travel.

    I really want to see this thing happen. I love doing emulation machines with SBCs like the Raspberry Pi and for the most part, it would be enough for me. But by now, the Pi 5 is so expensive itself that if we get a FPGA board for 100-150€ (hello from Europe) that handles those classic games better than software emulation anyway, I'd much rather go for the MiSTer replica now. Preferably in a case that has all ports going to the back save for snacks/controller ports as that is also something I don't like about Raspberries but still.

    Emulators have been popular for a long time and aren't illegal. The only thing Nintendo has done recently is gone after one of the Wii emulators because they used dumped data from the actual Wii (or maybe it was a Switch emulator? I forget the details) if there was anything Nintendo could do to stop NES, SNES, N64 emulators, their lawyers would've done it decades ago.

  • @kosmosyche

    I doubt DE-10 Nano is an important source of revenue for Terasic, it was never meant to be as far as I understand and at some point (maybe even up until now) was even subsidized by Intel, meaning Intel had some financial incentives in place for Terasic to produce this board. It's meant as a learning board for people to get hooked on Altera's FPGA ecosystem and chips (Altera being Intel's subsidiary, of course). So I don't know, if Terasic is even interested in changing anything about the pricing, they probably couldn't care less.
