Mistakes on the Trail Almost Cost Us

Welcome to the nail-biting conclusion (Part 4) of our Gold Butte Overland Adventure. We were doing just fine following the route outlined by Overland Trail Guides when we got the idea to plug our final destination into our Toyota 4Runner GPS. It pulled up an alternate route that was "much shorter" that the pre-planned route mapped into Gaia GPS, taking us down Elbow Canyon in the Arizona strip. Being that we'd been driving all day and wanted to get to St. George, Utah for a nice steak dinner, we thought we'd take the route suggested by our Toyota GPS. After all, how bad could it really be? We were about to enter 8 hours of offroad hell, courtesy of off-camber snow banks, rutted roads, rock slides, massive boulder obstacles, washouts (including a creek running through the middle of the road), gnarly switchbacks with clay mud, and branches scraping the crap out of our 4Runner. We've rock crawled all kinds of trails over the past 20 years (including trails rated a 7 in Moab) and although this trail doesn't have any obstacles of that magnitude, the 8 hours of constant unknowns out in the middle of nowhere after already driving 8 hours was extremely difficult and that's why we said this was the worst road we've ever driven - more psychological wear than anything else.

Thanks so much Juan! Yes, Jamie is a lifesaver. She’s gotten so good at spotting over the years that she really knows the angles and adjustments to get out of hairy spots. We definitely appreciate your comments and your support of our channel. We’ll keep the videos coming!

Holy cow!!!! This kept me on the edge! The background music set the tone, too 😆. I'm glad you made it out safely 🍺. I know that feeling going through the unknown , and video definitely does not do it justice. amazing 👏🏼 👏🏼

Great videos and great job going through Elbow Canyon. I'm from the area around Elbow Canyon and Elbow is one of two roads that takes you up and over the mountains and they have both washed out. A few weeks back, Matt Off Road Recovery had to pull a vehicle off Elbow and he had a very hard time. I still think you and the wife did a great job! Need to make a patch for Elbow Canyon to place in the cab of your 4runner.

Thanks Gary! Yeah, since we came from the top we didn't see any signs about the road being washed out. Although we've done plenty of gnarly trails, the fear of the unknown and what was around the next corner really started getting to us after awhile, but glad we made it out. For a minute (when stuck), I seriously thought we'd be calling Matt's Offroad Recovery! I'll have to go look for that video of him rescuing someone in Elbow Canyon. Great idea about the patch! Appreciate your comment.

Go 4Runner! Nicely done. You guys make a great team. We've found a few trails like that as well. Weird thing is, we end up going back and trying them again ha ha! New sub here from the Pacific Northwest.

@@xpadventure Oh thanks so much! I actually love channels like yours. You guys are out there doing legit stuff (Black Bear Pass, Moab, etc.) and using the 4Runner for what is was made to do. The problem solving and self-reliance that you guys demonstrated in this video is part of what I like so much about overlanding. I'm a fan!

Thanks! Yeah, it was scary because we didn’t know what was around the next corner. Glad we got out of there in one piece! It is good to travel with others but a lot of times we’re on our own for the easier overlanding trails.

Definitely got a new sub. My lady and I have a similar trail by our house and it almost killed us last winter in a 3rd gen 4runner. I've been wheeling for a long time but it was straight dangerous and we went out alone. Lessons learned!

Thanks for subscribing! Yes, it was a super valuable lesson to learn - it's scary when you don't know what's in front of you and you're trying to get off the trail. We spent over 8 hours on a 15 mile section of terrible road - only those who have been through it know how bad it can get and the pics never do it justice!

Yes, we hope it will help others think twice. We've done lots of rock crawling over the years (in a Jeep Rubicon and Landcruiser primarily) but sometimes you get a false sense of security on the capability of the vehicle. Thankfully we made it but we could have saved ourselves a lot of grief if we had just turned around when things started to get bad, especially if the conditions ahead are totally unknown. Thanks for watching!

Good thing your lady was so helpful. If I where in the same situation with my wife she would have been helpless, and I would have been on my own to figure out the whole situation myself.

I hear you! Something lit a fire under her - not sure if it was stress or anger for being on the trail so long or what, but she went into beast mode. 😆 Would’ve been a different ball game without her.
