The one thing that Mississauga transit is missing that makes the TTC awesome is the next bus notification through Texting

Mississauga grew and spread out so quickly during 90s and 00s, a time when the provincial government cancelled funding for transit, the system could not catch up with the growth. Now that provincial funding has returned, Mississauga is no longer growing outward, developers are starting to fill in the gaps in development, the gaps in the transit network have likewise been getting filled in. Mississauga is still behind some of its peers (e.g. Winnipeg, Quebec City) in terms of ridership and annual service hours per capita but probably not as much as people might think. The fundamental difference between the Ottawa and Mississauga Transitways is that one acts as the primary corridor for Ottawa, while the other is just a tertiary corridor for Mississauga. The primary and secondary transit corridors for Mississauga are Hurontario and Dundas. Dundas is Mississauga's second busiest corridor and it will need conversion to rail long before the transitway will.

I feel the key element in making transit great isn’t transit itself but how we use the land around it. Mississauga is a really interesting exemple. A few decades ago, towers used to be single use and marooned in a sea of parking, developers often amalgamating height with density. Now the city is getting more mixed development high-rise and mid-rise with underground and street parking only, in proximity to frequent mass transit. Seems like it’s one of the main reason why mass transit ridership is so low in North America except maybe in NJ, TO, NY, VAN and MTL. It’s not so much that we don’t have hundred of interconnected super frequent heavy rail lines in every direction (that would help obviously), it’s that we develop land by segregating use (or even people… yikes), and build with car use as the main focus.

Thats a very good point. Take the Sheppard Subway. Its a high-order transit option, but its ridership is lower than many streetcar lines. You cant just "build transit and they will come" Its much more than that. If you look at what Mississauga has already done with City Centre, Port Credit, Erin Mills and Streetsville, there have been a lot of improvements for mixed use and developments of parking lots and other vacant land, and much more to come(i.e. Lakeview, Port Credit West, M City, Erin Mills/Eglinton, etc) Outside of Square One, Mississauga will more-less always be a suburban hells-cape, but if it can build more mixed-use developments like you said, its transit service will be used.

Reece Martin right! Research in perception psychology as really been insightful in how we should organize space. The environment where you walk influences your perception of time; walking from your car to your destination will usually feel longer in large empty dull spaces like parking lots.

I would really enjoy you making an updated video. Mississauga is the 3rd largest city in Ontario so I would love to see more coverage about how transit is being made. I would also like for you to talk about what’s wrong about the transit in Mississauga and what needs to be improved. Maybe even a Brampton video would be fun.

I would like to see increased frequency on more MiWay routes, especially 26 Burnhamthorpe, as well as a branch that goes directly to UTM. Still one of the biggest problems with MiWay is bus delays, in many cases due to car traffic, not to mention the inevitable (over)crowding on the busier lines.

I don't know if you heard about it yet, but there's a BRT line planned on Dundas Street in Mississauga. It was originally supposed go from Ridgeway at the west end of Mississauga (at the Mississauga/Oakville border) to Kipling Station in Toronto but it was shortened to only begin at Confederation (just a block west of Hurontario). It's trying to mimic the Viva Rapidway BRT in York. In my opinion, I feel that the future Dundas BRT would be the city's true East-West corridor along with Hurontario. The Dundas and Hurontario intersection is already a very densely populated, walkable and well transit served area with both Dundas and Hurontario buses being the two busiest routes in the city. I read in one Toronto star article that even compared it to Yonge and Bloor in Toronto so yeah I think there's a lot of growth potential for Dundas in terms of transit in Mississauga.

@@sm3675 I was referring to the Mississauga portion of the line. But yeah, I'm all for better transit along Dundas as I live along Dundas Street here in Mississauga. When all's said and done, I feel it's gonna be a good alternative for those who want to go out west to Oakville, Burlington or Hamilton, but either don't drive or don't want to take the GO train.

4:34 - The Issue I see with just straight converting the transitway into an LRT, none of the bus services that run along the Transitway *only* run along the transitway, that was kind of the whole point of the transitway. The Express Services that really take advantage of the transitway all run through places like Pearson/Westwood Square/Humber College (107), Meadowvale Town Centre (109), Kipling Bus Terminal (also 109), UoTM and Clarkson Station (110), ect, run onto the transitway, then use the grade separation, most of that is one seat seamless. With development it's changing but as it stands and how it was designed most of the transitway passengers are using it and including a non transitway station at at least one end of their trip. For an LRT to really work you would almost certainly have give the LRT Branches into those areas the express busses are currently servicing, otherwise you would just be adding a large amount of switching from one service to another where it's currently seamless.

They just took the Square One LRT loop away from the Hurontario LRT, as well as the direct pedestrian access to the Cooksville GO station. Way to go, guys! Interesting tidbit: the busway was originally supposed to go across Burnhamthorpe.

It's good in the sense for their willingness to invest into new vehicles and improving their schedules overall. However, when I lived along Mavis back in the early 2000s, the 61 bus that goes through our area ran only once an hour, even during rush hour! And that was a 40 minute ride to Square One, then another 40 minutes on the 26 to Islington!

Hi Reece, Nice Video as always! Do you think that it would be a good idea to merge Brampton Transit and MiWay to create a regional level transit agency? (similar to York RT and Waterloo's GRT). Additionally, how big of a mistake do you think it was to cancel the Main Street/Brampton GO station portion of the Hurontario LRT? Why do you think that the Hurontario LRT is priced at 1.4 Billion for 18 Km of track whereas Waterloo's ION LRT was priced at 0.8 billion for 19 km of track?

They've put a lot of thought and work into it and it's getting better all the time. This is the type of infrastructure improvement that makes what would otherwise be an suburban hellscape into a pretty liveable place. Hazel's policy of making high-rise developers build amenities with each development is also producing a very pleasant downtown, with some mixes use development rarely seen in the kind of single family dwelling zoned subdivision I grew up in. Hopefully that stays in place for a while now that she's retired after her incredible run as gangster in chief.

  • @gordon7478

More mixed use development is really what Mississauga needs, and walking around the new downtown is proof of that. It's genuinely a decent place to be. Walking from your dwelling to a get a coffee for example (not that I wouldn't mind seeing less Starbucks and more local business opening up in those lots, but I'm sure the rent is obscene) should not be a privilege reserved for when you stay over in Toronto after a night out. It's just the kind of thing that makes living in a city a decent experience. Unless walking barefoot on grass is your thing I guess. Okay rambling again, I'm out.

I think THE GO station of Missisauga on Kitchener Line is actually Brampton GO. Because it has a better connection to Missisaugua city center than Malton. It takes ~ 40mins by Brampton's BRT service ZUM, straight to Square One via Main/Hurontario, compared to an hour-long trip from Malton going around the airport. And buses from Malton GO is also much less frequent. I live in KW and tried to develop a transit plan to travel to Missisauga by rail, and Brampton is where I would get off. Thankfully, GO bus route 25C is back, and route 25 doesn't take >2hrs anymore, so I don't need this plan now.

I'm sure most of your Canadian viewers know that you're talking about, but your international viewers such as myself wouldn't. I had to look up where Mississauga actually is and where the Transit Way actually runs for instance.
