The most people can do with this role is to articulate it for the art and meaning. To understand dedication and control! And most of all to have fun! But I doubt that any Kim even in previous years ever had to feel jealousy, as I think they all did wonderful in their own ways, in all fairness. Musicians are athletes too, ahah! Lea is definitely one that stood out like a star, as she was chosen right away for this role after the Miss Saigon's production team had travelled to Hawaii, New York, Taiwan, and Philippines to find their Kim and everyone who played Kim knows that 🤍

they sounded unbelievably good, and yet... the entire thing looked so real. if i didn't know any better, i would've thought they were truly madly in love. it's mind-blowing how convincing the performance was.

You should watch the actual play, not just this performance for an awards show (I think), because the set is so limited here, they dont even have a fake balcony lol

@@Dan-gi6tf I'm pretty sure this was a performance for a talk show. There were interviews with Lea, Jonathan Pryce, and also the writers Boublil and Schoenberg. I want to say it might have been Lea's first time on a British talk show. (Of course, Lea had been on TV many times in the Philippines before this and even hosted her own musical tv show from ages 12-14 with her younger brother.)

I know what you mean! She still sounds wonderful, but as she got older, her voice became more operatic with maturity. At this point in her life, her tone was so light without any vibrato required at all. Her notes drifted into the air with wings of the most purely sustained notes.

There's a certain tenderness here that you don't see with the other versions of Lea and varying Chrises ... not that they aren't good, just different. Other versions are more playful, others still more passionate, but I really like how this one is glowing with a quiet sort of tender affection. Bravo to both Ms. Salonga and Mr. Bowman!

You mean 'other versions of Kim'? Anyway, they didn't perform it like this on the stage, because you really have to speak/sing up in order for the nosebleed seats to hear you. This interpretation was for the benefit of television, which is a more intimate medium. Same with movies.

It's 13 April 2023 today and here I am again as usual listening to these two of my favorite performers of all time. Their singing together seems like my panacea; it's PERFECT!

The chemistry these two performers have is incredible. Lea is the original miss Saigon:)

You would think they were actually in love. Perfect.

Lea Salonga is phenomenal here but so is Simon Bowman. And I have nothing but the deepest respect for him for being a gentleman towards her and her mother because of Lea's anxiety of doing the love scenes with him without having had the experience of love. Lea always talks in interviews that he felt her reservations and assured her and her mother that he will take care of her and not take advantage of her. That's why after so many years their mutual friendship has always been special to the both of them. And as for many, I prefer their depicition of Kim's and Chris' romance as being innocent and pure, as being reflected in their friendship in real life. 🥰

anamorphosys85 Yes, I agree! All I can say is that Simon Bowman is a brilliant actor and a true British gentleman. Lea was 18 and Simon was 28 when Miss Saigon was played in 1989. Lea comes from a very protected/sheltered background thus never had any intimate relationship with anyone, never been kissed by a bloke as Simon stated/posted on his website. I can understand and imagine Lea's anxiety and I am sure it took quite a lot of convincing and reassurance to both mother and daughter that this is only an act. Despite of this being an act, it takes my breath away everytime their lips touch. I can feel the innocence, purity, tenderness, true love that both of them portrayed in their given roles. The undeniable fact here is that Simon Bowman was and always will be Lea's first kiss in life.

It's 2023 and I am still in awe of this song and performers. I can still feel the deep tender love in each note. Of all Lea's Chris, Simon is still the best for me. Lea is the best Kim ever. I always have goosebumps and become teary each time I see clips of Ms Saigon. How I wish I had the money then to be able to see it in its Manila run. Thanks yt for being there. At least I've seen many parts of the play thru socmed.

He has one of the best suited voices for this role!! Think of what kind of singing was prevelent at the time this show was set...He gives a phenominally intelligent performance... his 'sky' is THE best of any Chris ever...proper projection! blends and complements Leas pure song perfectly. The chemistry on set is brilliant - very natural.

I don't know how many times I hit replay for the past few months of being addicted to this song. I love you Lea. "Reflection" from Mulan was my puberty and self esteem boosting song. It literally changed my life. I didn't even know that a fellow Filipina was the voice behind that soul stirring song. I think all 90's kids with self esteem issues relate to that song in a very emotional way. I am not a fan of classical songs but you Lea indpired me to appreciate classical songs. Your voice is sweet, gentle and heavenly. There have been other versions with more powerful voices but your performance is really magical.

It's 2019 and here am I viewing this video of Lea & Simon's duet of Sun and Moon(which to me is the superior version)Every time I view the video, I still feel the sweetness and tenderness of sublime love, expressed convincingly by these great actors/singers. Too bad that their love ended tragically.

Obsessed with this musical but have never seen it properly live - it was showing at my local cinema. Would absolutely love to see it in a theatre. I sobbed my heart out!

They're both beautiful people & singers! Simon rocks and I think it's needless to say how much lea rocks. Their kisses and voices are so tender yet passionate!

I went to go see the Tour of this back in 2003 before it closed. I loved it, but man... no one can hold a candle to Simon and Lea. I wish there was a DVD of the original cast. :(

Darn it people! It's broadway...you need to transform yourself into a different person whenever you're on stage because you're not you when the play starts. I don't get the nasty comments here about the kissing thing. I mean, she's kinda in the right age when she did this and it's just an effin' kiss. I can't at these people looking at the flaws instead of the talent itself...like really? ugh. Anway, I never thought Lea's voice was this thin and sweet beofre because she's got a bigger voice now.. She was just 17 or 18 then, that's why her voice fits well with the character... angelic but strong... that's why it's hard to find the perfect Kim 'coz it seems that the role was written for her...;-)

People are more sexually mature now; because they feel they need to have sex at a younger age (which i actually don't agree with); but I think the innocence of the performance is incomparable, and is probably lost forever on our generation.

Miss Saigon is a very powerful musical with some really beautiful tunes. i think the male lead in this production shown as got a really good voice. I love the musicals, you just can't beat 'em

I've loved Miss Saigon since the first time I saw it, 12 and a half years ago now. Re-watching this clip still put me right back to the wonder and magic of discovering it from new. And young Lea Salonga! What a dish, and what a voice. There's something about the sweet innocence and slight underdevelopment of her voice that is so ephemeral, and suits Kim so. MAGIC.

Probably someone called out enough.......It looks like he wanted to keep kissing her and she was kissing him back as well. Maybe he was told to back off a bit.......But him looking over her head meant that people or film.crew were behind the wall, and it did look awkward. I think he had really fallen for his Kim. Those love scenes must have put a lot of strain on their everyday working life. Who's to know and who's going to tell. But they made a fantastic on screen couple. Lovely to watch.

I was so lucky to see lea perform at Drury lane back in 1991 I still ahve chills thinking about. I loved it so much i bought a towel. And when it came to Toronto I saw it at the Princessof wales theaterto much contraversy. Beautiful song and its nice to see Terry.
