The following is brilliant. When Erhman asked his students how many of them believed the Bible is the inspired word of God, the entire class put up their hands. When Erhman asked them how many of them had read the Bible from cover to cover, only a few hands went up. Ehrman commented, “You’d think that if people believe the Bible is the inspired word of God, they would want to know what God had to say.”

It's a very important point. I wonder how many people know the whole Bible completely by heart. I bet the answer is none. If you ask this question about the Qur'an, you'll find many know it completely by heart. In it God says: 'And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?' 54:17

Reading all the books that make up the bible is one sure fired way to end up being an atheist... probably the main reason that the church outlawed anyone having a bible other than ordained priests.

It just confirms that no thought or reflection goes into fundamentalist dogma. I'm a Taoist, but that realization only came to me after having read as much Taoist writing as I could find, many times, and after much reflection and meditation (AKA prayer). It took years. The students referred to here evidently signed on with fundamental Christianity because someone above them in the social hierarchy imparted to them the understanding that it was a good idea. It's unfortunate. What results is a social support network built around aggressive political activism, without understanding, and without any path to Grace. I believe that accounts for the fact that fundamentalists appear to "believe" so many things that contradict the teachings of Jesus (who, BTW, was an ideal Taoist in fact, if not in name).

I think that there is a time and a place in life for a more constrained interpretation. As The Teacher said: "There is a season". And as Paul said "When I was a child I spoke as a child and thought as a child". The problem crops up when people hold on to those restrained views even as they intellectually and spiritually mature. Another problem occurs when people try to impose their supposedly better views on others. Each person has their path and it is good to encourage them pursue it in their own time.

Before I discovered the world of former believers turn atheist/agnostic I really thought I was on an island. Listening to people like him make me feel a sense of validation that I never knew I would need on this path of life. I tried to describe to my friend that the eras I saw in the Bible became to great for me to continue to believe in god. She told me she just ignored the parts of the Bible I was talking about because at the end of the day “man could have messed up some things because after all we are human and only god is perfect”. I responded, “How would the god that created the universe, the massive amazing universe not make sure his precious word was preserved for all time. We are suppose to base salvation on what it teaches. You can’t convince me that a god that can create the marvels of the world and a galaxy that is so massive that even traveling at the speed of light we couldn’t cross it in our lifetime. It would take 200,000 years and that’s just our galaxy. So a god who can create these things would make sure that no errors would distort his word”. I was one of those Christian that bought into the belief that Jesus was the bread of life and I needed to know his word and hide it in my heart. So to be spiritually fed and transform I would renew my mind by sitting at the feet of Jesus and seeking his truth through the word. But to my complete and utter anguish it caused legit turmoil. From that I fasted and interceded because I thought I must be under demonic attack. I must have a spirit devotion, of Jezebel, or a spirit of Leviathan. I went to leaders and humbly shared the despair and doubt that reading the Bible was causing me. But to no avail I couldn’t get free from this dark cloud. I would blare worship music to drown out the thoughts of doubt. I was quite literally trying to get myself to STOP THINKING. Moral of the story is decided to start thinking and allowed myself to accept I am not a believer. I am finally free. Without a doubt free from oppression! It kind of makes me giggle thinking that back in the day if I had talk to myself I would have felt bad for me and thought, “man she is deceived”.

I have asked myself the same questions too. I found that if you sort out answers from thd bible on foundational questions like what to do to be saved the answers do not always correspond from writer to writer. I felt just like you that at least those things should be clear, if eternal fate of persons depend on it. I find that there really is no way of establishing clarity. I believe that all religions are man made, based on culture of the founders. They offer wisdom, but sometimes in error. In the end we all use the filter of our conscience and personal experience to decide right from wrong and how to walk this path called life. I still believe that there is a God, and that better than in any book, God is revealed through his ever evolving creation.

I left Christianity for similar reason/mindset. You’d expect omniscient and omnipotent God to preserve his word better etc. And since i was a fundamentalist Christian who believed in inerrancy of the bible, when i really came across the real contradictions and errors, that put me into denial and a shock. It took me 3 years to fully deconvert. Ultimately, What brought me out of Christianity was lack of evidence and just flat out wrong history and contradictions etc. But it on the other hand, biblical world view seriously conflicted with my philosophy. Such as just, loving and omnipotent god throwing people into hell for unbelief. Why can’t God punish people for finite amount of time since their sins were finite? I remember Some pastor defending eternal hell by saying “you committed sin against an eternal God and so just punishment is eternal one”. Yeah, no. Screw that. Why would you judge the sinner’s sentence based on god’s eternalness? You created us this way and we were brought into this existence not even by our own choice and you want to send us to eternal torment? And what if you were born into Islamic family? Into Hinduism? Your location of birth is most likely going to your eternal fate? What about children who die at like 15? They goto hell? Get the f... out. Christians will do these mental gymnastics to defend god. Nah. I dont buy it.

i understand that but listen to this, your flesh does not want to hear anything about God! that’s why you’re uninterested. this is what romans 3:11-18 says: “there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.” “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” so no one in their flesh understands God, no one in their flesh even seeks God, their is no fear of God in their eyes, they all tuned away and became worthless. this is true! but look at what james 4:6-10 says: “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” so we need to be humble, we need to realize we might be wrong. we need to realize that God might be real and that we sinned against that Holy and Perfect God. deuteronomy 4:29 says this: “But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.” well maybe you just don’t want to truly find God, and i think i understand that. but listen to this, it’s the best thing that will ever happen in your life. it might be scary, you might have to give up your pride or even your life. but Jesus said in luke 9:24: “for whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will save it.” you might not even understand how that could make any sense. but if you just take that leap in the light and truth you will be set free from whatever you have right now and be given something that your mind right now can’t understand. the grace of God and His love for you. john 3:16-21 says: “for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” and romans 10:9-13 says “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” now idk if you ever read the bible much, but i suggest that you read at least 1 of the 4 gospels matthew, mark, luke, or john. and see what’s true, humble yourself and seek God. taste and see that the Lord is good. faith comes by hearing the word of God, God loves you so much and has thoughts of peace and not of evil for you! God wants to give you a new life, and for you to walk the streets of gold in His kingdom forever.

Not only that so called ex-christians like Bart has never had any relationships with God or Jesus. They have never met him or carried deep meaningful prayers or conversations with God in their whole life. And yet they say they lost faith after reading some inconclusive works based on limited historical materials generated from restricted methods. God is not real to them because they have not met God at all. Only if they opened their heart and listen. If people listened to God and did good things like loving their neighbors truly and sincerely, well the world would be a better place. And yet they complain how horrible the world is when they don't do good things that God asks them to do.

Under the umbrella and in the apartment I had read in those 15 days "Misquoting Jesus" and Elaine Pagels' "The Gnostic Gospels" (both in Portuguese). Twice each. The experience has been addictive. Thank you, Dr. Bart.

Why stop there. Why not read the word of God? The incomparable worf of God. Not all bibles are inspired! So I speak only of the one that is: In Psalm 12:6-7 God said He preserved His word. The others do not. The Authorized Version, later called the King James Bible, shows God truly wants to know you as His! The Bible was written by over 40 writers of various backgrounds over a span of about 1500 years, written in the continents of Asia, Africa and Europe in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic, [the Masoretic text]. The New Testament [Antioch,Textus Receptus] was written in Greek. They fit perfectly together to unfold the drama of redemption!!! There are approximently 24,000 ancient copies of portions of the new testament. These are supported by writings of the church theologians in the first four centuries. There is also external evidence: Tacitus, a Roman historian, and Josephus, a Jewish historian. Both support bible accounts. This book is not about stories, which are now viewed as fictional, but are true life events. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF PERFECTLY FULFILLED PROPHECIES. Fulfilled by Jesus. HISTORICAL ACCURACY. Many, many about Israel. Some being fulfilled even in our time. Also, Prophecy of Cyrus and prophecy of the city of Tyrus. Also: 101 SCIENTIFIC FACTS IN THE BIBLE. God wrote about science thousands of years before man did. He tells us ahead of time so that we will know that He is God.

You stand 2000 years later in a culture that is so alien to that of the Roman empire and act as if people didn’t know how to use their ears and transcribe the words and actions of events surrounding them. We have exhaustive records of various battles that took place all over the Roman empire and you don’t think someone could have potentially written down what they were observing in a public crucifixion? We think we are the pinnacle of intellect sitting in the 21st-century, yet our ancestors created miraculous and complex systems and structures that still amaze us today. Maybe gain a tiny bit of perspective before saying no one could have done something when you probably have done little to no research on the subject and don’t seem to have an appreciation for the capabilities of the ancient people of our planet.

I wish current day so-called christians would study why they believe instead of worrying about the new dress they are going to wear to church on Sunday. It seems they care more about what they do one day a week than why they do it. I find the history of the Bible fascinating and I’m learning a lot thanks to Bart. Thanks Bart. Alda wrote a very good book about it that I recommend to academics or anyone who deals with this. (Not an employee or anything, just a fan.) @@joandark2 the vast majority yes. But the minor differences between. "Jesus wept" and " Jesus cried" could lead to totally different interpretation of the scripture. because the words are synonyms but are not identical. Cried could give the impression of anger or sadness; tears or yelling. While wept implies a deep sadness or morning with tears. The idea that these tiny seemingly insignificant changes happened repeatedly generation after generation for hundreds of years is the problem. Not only that but the bible was clearly altered over time. The last verses of Revelation are proof of that. Why discourage someone from doing something that has never happened before. And why wouldn't the little punctuation mistakes matter if it says it's self not to change a single jot or tittle.

My question is about the witnesses, like in the birth of Jesus, the baptism of Jesus, the temptation of Jesus, and the trial of Jesus. In all of these occasions, which appear in all four gospels though different, my question is how do the authors, qualify the statements of the four when the four weren't there to witness any of these events. Nobody would have went into Pilate's place where Jesus' trials were taking place, as with the other things mentioned. Sorry, bad punctuation, I'm no scholar.

Although there's some doubt as to his authorship, Peter knew Jesus...I guess. I mean who knows if these people even existed? Actually, now that I think about it, the notable historian, Josephus, recorded Jesus' crucifixion and, I believe, he may have mentioned the altercation at the temple. That's really the most reliable evidence that we have, at all, of Jesus' existence. The Gospels, themselves, are problematic at best. Nevertheless, people have managed to pull a narrative together that satisfies them. I wish it was that easy for me "to believe". I feel a deep need for God in my life. And, being raised Catholic, I feel a strong inclination to believe that The Son of God is real. I'm as doubtful as anyone though...and my primary passion is for The Truth. I can't force myself to adopt such a serious a conviction just because "Grandma & Grandpa believed it". I'm paraphrasing the author of, "The Historical Figure of Jesus" (whose name escapes me), who says that "while Jesus is enormously popular today...He wasn't a particularly important person during His own lifetime." Be well.

Actually, Messianic creeds about the life, miracles, death and resurrection of JESUS were circulating 2-3 years after JESUS ascended into Heaven. The Book of Galatians was written in 47 or 48 AD. The Koran wasn't written for almost 200 years after the death of Mohammed.

@@proverbalizer no, you were misleading. JESUS was crucified around 33 AD. So the first New Testament book was written 14-15 years later. As I previously mentioned, writings about JESUS were widely circulated within 2 or 3 years of HIS ascension. The evidence for JESUS is overwhelming if you are willing to examine it

There are some commenters below who don't seem to have watched the video before commenting. One person mentions the Dead Sea Scrolls which have little to do with the New Testament and another makes a point about Hebrew scribes which again has no bearing on what Prof. Ehrman is talking about. Given that the commenters both appear to be xtian fundie apologists it is ironic that the very book they defend but appear not to have read says in Proverbs (18/13) "He that answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame unto him."

prez58 - This is why they defend it. If someone actually reads it cover to cover then one can enjoy parts and be appalled by others. On long stretches it is boring, repetitive and not least written for people who are dead about 1800 year. The new testament authors wanted to share their view of Jesus and they indeed had very different views about him. It shows that they did not know the person nor what actually happened. It had to fit their narrative.

I only needed to watch 6 minutes into the video to hear at least 3 very basic errors, by this supposed "expert". I'll watch the rest shortly. However ... 1) We do know who Mark was. He was the young man who escaped naked. Mark 14:50-52. ... He was later with Peter in Babylon, and probably got a lot of information from him at that time. (Peter, by the way, spent a lot of time with Jesus, in case you didn't know that titbit). 2) Where did he get that unbelievable 90% illiteracy figure from? He made it up! He's worse that what he is trying to denounce! All Jewish children were taught to read from the start. Mark himself wrote this book in Rome when visiting Paul (as he correctly states) and he wrote parts in both Latin and Greek to explain some Jewish terms, phrases and customs, as it was intended for Romans and Greeks to read. Romans could read - that's how they got to be an empire. Greeks could read - that's how they got to be an empire too. Why would books be painstakingly copied if no-one could read them??? !!! Just because the dark ages had high illiteracy among the poor in Europe, does NOT mean that people were totally uneducated in 1st century in the Roman empire. 3) In those times, there were people called "Copyists", (also known as Scribes). Their profession was accurate copying. Legal docs, Contracts, and anything else that came their way, such as books. Where do you think other non- Biblical papyrus and parchment docs got to our museums? Are they all false too? --- During copying and, as time moved on, translating, changes were necessarily made to keep the language understandable and "modern". However, the essence, the meaning, was not changed. By comparing many copies of the same texts from different times, you can actually see how accurate they are. --- I haven't seen the Dead Sea Scroll comment you mention, but it is a good example of this fact of accurate copying, when you compare them to ms. of the same texts made hundreds of years on. So. One basic error every 2 minutes. About par for these bloated egotistical "experts" who wouldn't know their own names unless they had it tattooed on their arms. I look forward to laughing through the rest of this joke of a lecture.

Well he misses some obvious points. The omission of those few passages makes no difference to the resurrection message. Christians know they are additions and we don't take them as inspired. Why does he treat them as a big deal if he is so brilliant? Also it is not a big deal that the crucifixion and resurrection accounts are different. If they were the same I would assume the writers had collaborated. But they each wrote down what they knew. Could have been all those things happened. Why can't Bart see that - a detective would understand? I guess cos he doesn't want to. He also misses that the apostles were so convinced by the resurrection of Jesus they dedicated their lives to preaching the Gospel and each was prepared to die for it. He is brilliant at persuading a crowd who don't want to believe the Gospel that it isn't true, I guess.

His mistakes and misreadings and historical slights of hand are too legion to categorize. Further, you have to be a professional in this field and know the literature, the articles of contention, and the various Scriptures well enough to apprehend all the failings in his arguments. Suffice it to say: he’s a hack. But he’s honestly too mediocre? to know what a hack he is. There are such people in academia.
