Bart Ehrman & Jesus, Interrupted - Commonwealth Club

On Monday, March 21, 2011 Bart Ehrman gave a lecture at the San Francisco Commonwealth Club of California, underwritten by The Bernard Osher Foundation. Moderator was Alan Jones, Dean Emeritus, Grace Cathedral. The appearance was largely related to Bart Ehrman's printed release of "Jesus, Interrupted." Bart Ehrman takes you on a journey to the ancient world and the forgery battles that have raged through the centuries. Ehrman contends in the lecture that the New Testament is riddled with contradictions about the life of Jesus and his significance. He provides compelling evidence that early Christianity was a collection of competing schools of thought and that the central doctrines we know today were the inventions of theologians living several centuries after Christ.
Video discussed on Bart Ehrman's Foundation Blog: ehrmanblog.org/?p=5149
Bart D. Ehrman is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He came to UNC in 1988, after four years of teaching at Rutgers University. At UNC he has served as both the Director of Graduate Studies and the Chair of the Department of Religious Studies. A graduate of Wheaton College (Illinois), Professor Ehrman received both his Masters of Divinity and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, where his 1985 doctoral dissertation was awarded magna cum laude.

The majority of the questions seem to have come from the audience. For the purposes of the radio show I assume, the had the moderator read them out. Plus we have to deal with the time consuming process of passing around the mic.

Very interesting. I don't agree with the argument that theology and history are two different "games", and one doesn't have influence on the other. I think facts are the only game in town (be it facts about history, or science), and they should be the starting point of any conversation.

In a sense I agree, but I think it's important to concentrate on the part's of believes, that actually influence other people. There are part's of a believe, that I can't understand like the idea of an afterlife, that aren't in them selves harmful. So, I think his approach is a more realist's approach.

I'm consistently frustrated with people who understand the facts but deny their implications. Why doesn't evolution undermine Genesis? Why doesn't a forgery in a bible undermine it's value for moral teachings? Why doesn't the problem of evil undermine a god? I find Christians who are ambivalent to these questions are some of the most frustrating, albeit polite, I encounter.

Scot McDonald I agree. You're perfectly within your rights to claim the book has good moral value, but at the same time, it has horrible moral teachings. Once you claim it's from a deity, that's when you lose. The bible has as much moral good as the Quran, and both are as terrible as the last.

Darwin predicted it, and voila, we've found them. If you don't accept the theory of Evolution, you're uneducated, it's as simple as that. Yes, Evil does undermine an all good, and all powerful god. Either the god cannot do anything about human suffering, or he won't. If a book that contains known forgeries is being used to teach morality, it *does* undermine it's moral authority.

this is down to many factors, how old the copies are, the type and style of language used , as this helps to date it to near or way out from when he was alive , and also the theology - if it completely contradicts the mainstream writings to such an extent , it is more likely to be dodgy , created by those who had their own slant and agenda to push forward. The 7 letters are the majority of scholars agree on not just Barts take on them.

although the people mocked and laughed when the Quran was mentioned. How is it that the Quran says 1400 years ago, long before the christian scholars "woe to those who write the book with their own hands and ascribe it to Allah" and the christians say that Mohhamad wrote the Quran even though he could not read or write and there were no bibles in arabic at the time, Then they say the Quran is plagirised from the bible yet the stories are different and more logical, if it took 50 odd anonymous authors hundreds of years to compile the OT and NT then Mohhameed did really well to get all the points proven by Barts research over 30 years. Allah does exist and so did Jesus or Esa bin Maryam. we muslims know that mohhamed did not make up the quran. it is the entire word of God. if anyone wants the authentic word of God, please check out the Quran and dont listen to the media because they did the same to Jesus. slandered and libelled and given no human rights and dignity.

Al Gebra Al Jibar, you are using an islamic name. are you muslim. becasue if you are a muslim and know anything about Islam, The Quran and the Sunnah staand up historically and spirituallly, there is a book about Rasool Allah which does not mention at all the miracles nor amazing things that happened of a supernatural nature, even then just the way the religion developed and chnaged the people on the power of one humble man and grew to rule the known world of the time with similar rules to what the west has today in just one hundred years speaks for itself and Bart has to know Arabic to get the true picture, tafseers are good but only as good as the age they were produced and always have to be updated to cover the newest truths as they emerge. i.e. so this is what is meant by a certain verse which had previously been Ghaib. The main difference between Christian scriptures and islamic is that the Quran is the same in a living language with its super extensive vocablulary so there is no risk of it being misunderstood and misconstured. also the Ahadith have to have an authentic chain of narration. most of the Sahabah have a living genealogy and also their own recorded life stories. the collections of ahadith and their interpretations are a science in themselves and there are plenty of recordings of them and their authenticity. what is a fatwa, it is a religous ruling based on what is allowed in islam and what not. you see you are falling for the Christian Evangelical wolves in sheeps clothing talk, they know nothing but pretend to know everything and they mock the religion of islam because they are ignorant and arrogant. they are the ones engaged in this latest crusade because they wish the world to end and for them to be lifted up for a "rapture" a complete and utter lot of tosh and made up and these people fund the israeli state and anti islamic propaganda . i.e. bring up a case of a non practicing muslim misdeamanor and report it again and again again for days but will not report the year long genocide taking place in Central African REpublic against the muslims there. the UN recognises this is happening but will not send in anyone until September. by that time all the muslims in that place will have been culled.

Al Gebra If Bart reports the thing truthfully he will see that all the points he makes about christianity, Allah has been telling us for 1400 years. Bart has had all the thousands of relgious scriptures to hand to study and decide . Mohhamad SAW whom they accuse of plagiraising from the bible and of having written and made up the Quran himself was illiterate and there were no printed copies of the bible for him to study in arabic. it is only Allah that could have said about the christians and jews, " woe to the scribes who write the book with their own hand and ascribe it to Allah". We have no fear because we have the truth and Allah protects his religion himself. nobody takes it away until he decides to do so. Kissinger said in the sixties , if you can keep a population in fear, they will giveup their civil liberties in exchange for security. that is waht the war on tewwa is about and only after collapse of USSSR.

The Christians theologians who debates Dr. Ehrman about the gospel truth often beg the question by painting both books with the same brush after continuous fail attempts to defend the Bible. The Quran invites everyone to find errows and contradictions in it. It`s an open invitation especially to those who dont want to believe in God`s truth for no solid reason.

In regards to the Roman Census at Jesus birth, Additional evidence also seems to suggest that Quirinius served as governor twice which would then put him in an official position over Syria to enact the census of Luke 2:2. In 1784, a Latin inscription was discovered near Tivoli, located about twenty miles east of Rome. It is known as the Lapis Tiburtinus inscription, and according to Jack Finegan it, “…contains the statement of a high Roman official that when he became governor of Syria he entered the office for the second time (Latin, iterum). It has even been thought that this personage might have been Quirinius…” Whatever the identity is of the Roman official mentioned in the inscription, at minimum shows that it was not uncommon for Roman procurators to have served twice, and maximally it may eventually reveal that it was Quirinius himself, through further research.

Few poplw understand that there are TWO VERSIONS of Paul being let down by a basket from the wall of Damascus. And so I ask you, which is correct; 1) Acts 9:23-25, or 2) 2nd Corinthians 11:32. Was it: 1) "the Jews", or wasn't it really King Aretas of Nabatea (Petra = Arabia) who was really chasing Paul? In Galarians 1:17-20, Paul swears that "by God"--he just came from Arabia! Perhaos Paul should be renamed as "The Father of World Anti-Semitism", for he openly slandered Moses, Jews, and the 10 Commandments, which he called "a MINISTRY OF DEATH, CARVED IN STONE"--commandments that Jesus always praised as an "index of righteousness". Wasn't Paul actually always AGAINST RELIGIOUS LAWS, which Jesus himself conformed to? And wasn't he a Pharisee, one of the group of hypocrites Jesus always WARNED ABOUT? Paul was Roman butt-kisser, for he was a Roman citizen and he not only knew that by he was even a travelling companion of King Herod's half-brother, MANAEN (ACTS 13:1)--the same Herod who condemned Jesus.

Paul is very open about the fact that he started out as a persecutor of Christians and didn't see the light until he ... well, saw the light. He basically spent the rest of his life making amends for those transgressions against " the people of God's Church" as he called the Christians later.

Because of one man's ( Adam's ) disobedience ( sin ) every other human is under the curse of sin which is spiritual death. Because of one man's ( Jesus Christ ) obedience ( the one who never sinned ) he has broken the curse and gives life ( spiritual life - eternal life ) to those who believe and receive by faith. He ( Jesus ) now makes that person righteous in the eyes of the Father because that person now has excepted the righteousness of Christ as the only way to enter the kingdom of light. The only way to enter the kingdom of light is by being born again ( born of the Spirit ). The only one's that will suffer eternal torment are the one's who refuse to believe the truth. Romans 5:19 King James Version (KJV) 19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Galatians 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: 1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

The bible is full of such bizarre myths. The account given by Dr. Erhman pertaining to the angels as tall as our heaven is a typical example of naivity. It is clearly evident from the description of the writer who lived 2 thousand years ago, has virtually no knowledge of the universe. It is difficult for one to comprehend how highly educated individuals who has immense knowledge of science, could actually take such myths at face value.
