Misconceptions about IMEI and IMSI. Are these Phone Identifiers Destroying Our Privacy?

Ғылым және технология

Your mobile phone emits identifiers, and this is done over the airwaves (radio frequency). The identifiers are unique and thus can point directly to a specific person. These identifiers are the IMSI and IMEI and both are frequently misunderstood. This video is a primer on how the IMSI and IMEI can be used to track you, and how their impact can be minimized. Are these two identifiers of great concern?

    Privacy online does not exist. If you want privacy, you need to buy a burner phone, but then you may not get all the things you(not you personally Rob) desire. If you want to use gps in your car or on your smart phone, you cannot have privacy. I you want to shop online, you cannot have privacy. And so on and so forth.

    You must be fairly new to Rob's content. Yes, online privacy does exist. It just requires knowledge, time, effort and some money and some sacrifices. Burner phones aren't what Rob recommends; He recommends de-googled phones. But anyways, if you don't think online privacy exists don't take my word for it - read Extreme Privacy from michael bazzell. Or if you want a more user-friendly book, read Beginner's Introduction to Privacy from naomi brockwell. This one only costs 5 bucks.

    Very easily. A GPS (sometimes referred to as a GPS receiver) is a receiver. Satellites broadcast their signals and your GPS receives them (or doesn't) and calculates your location. Remember the old TomToms or Garmin's? They do not emit outgoing signals. You can have GPS and remain anonymous. Your biggest giveaway would be roadside cameras recording your car tag and logging the info in a database.

    I love these kind of detailed information videos. One thing that I've always wondered since I've heard you say it many times is why is cell tower triangulation so imprecise, to one half mile?

  • @robbraxmantech

    @robbraxmantech

    6 ай бұрын

    The tower signal strength is known to your phone but not necessarily by the tower. The carrier records which tower you connected to and which towers saw your signal. And signal strength is affected by where you are (indoors vs outdoors). There are not many towers per square mile. In contrast, Wifi triangulation is supported by thousands and thousands of Wifi access points. In a typical city, there could be a hundred in a short range.

    @@robbraxmantech Super astute and knowledge able as usual. Yet you DO miss one important caveat. If a person is walking around with WIFI turned on (3-6g) 24/7 close to their body like all the other "normies" are doing, then it is pretty likely they are going to electro smog themselves to death/cancer well before the corporations decide to steal all their important information/secrets. So, kind of a double whammy with the TWO-sided sword of tech. Of course, MOST of those normies also trust BIGBIZ to be honest with them about dangers such tech can present. Understand very well how much they do their best to try and hide their mad dash for profits while they allow health of the population to fall by the wayside.

    It has been my practice (in my own country), whenever I have lost a mobile phone or had one stolen, to confirm to my carrier to place a block/stop on the IMEI's as well as the SIM card. I want the finder/thief not to be able to use the handset as a phone - & blocking/stopping the IMEI's as well will usually do this. It will render the handset non-functional as a phone, so that it will only really be good to dismantle & use for spare parts. I once lost an expensive phone handset which was never recovered - so when my carrier asked me if I wanted to stop/block the IMEI's, I naturally said yes. The block/stop on the IMEI's was effective, not only with the carrier, but also nation-wide with all carriers in the country, & also as I understood it at the time, internationally, through the CEIR as well.

    its too bad the cell modem manufactures could not build a modem that generates a random uuid/guid at runtime and send it to the cell tower instead of a imei. If the random uuid/guid is already registered (hardly unlikely) then send back a token saying is is already registered and regenerate a new one and send it again. concerning the cellular service then all they need to do is provide phone card numbers that are independent of any identifier and you send that to the cellular tower as a verified. encryption will be required. It can be done but because the users refuse to demand this they government and corporations get away with it. At the end of the day it can be done if they want it.

    Thanks for the information. So although most of these IMSI catchers are state sponsored for gathering evidence and building cases, I am curious about these homemade IMSI catchers. So there is a low threat my neighbors or even my company could be a man in the middle, picking up my information? Not just listening to calls, but on active catching, they could be picking up your SMS, emails and web traffic? And if so, is there a viable way to detect these catchers? From what I read there is an Android version being developed, but there are less reliable versions on the Google Play store that only work unreliablbly on unlocked unrooted phones?

    @@MinisterRedPill It does not matter what type of mobile phone one has (& whether it is a de-Googled phone or not) - the carrier will always know what IMEI number is being used to connect to their network, because an IMEI number is a necessary requirement to connect to any phone network. However this information (ie what IMEI number is being used to connect a particular phone number to their network) is confidential to the phone carrier & in theory at least, cannot be released to any third parties such as law enforcement, without a warrant. The information that your mobile phone carrier holds about you & your phone account with them is also confidential - except where law enforcement has a warrant for the release of that information. The accuracy of location information on the basis of an IMEI alone, is not that great.
