Miriam Margolyes describes an absurd accident

Ойын-сауық

One sunny afternoon in May of 1924, accomplished British artist Dora Carrington wrote the following letter to her close friend, the writer Gerald Brenan, and, in her characteristic style, described an “absurd accident.”
The marvellous Miriam Margolyes joined us at Letters Live at the Freemasons' Hall in London to read this letter.

Margolyes is always remarkable. But the letter is, too. It’s such a vivid testament to how momentary irritations, distractions, and fits of anger can steal a life away, and of the bliss of being able to tell someone everything. In old-fashioned letter writing, people felt accompanied as they wrote, and as they read. Communication today is speedy and brief, and lacks that sense of being immersed in the company of the other.

Modern day version happened to a friend, who was a cashier in a grocery store back then. This tiny girl appears with her shoppings, but shes soaking wet, I mean dripping, puddles form in her feet. Friend, half laughing, asks what happened. The girl just smiles and nearly yells: “Well fuck, I took so much speed (amphetamine), I fell into the fountain!”, and carries on as if nothing spectacular just happened. This might be my favourite story of weird customers, ever. Sometimes life gives you lemons _and_ lemonade, I guess.

I think Dora Carrington must have been almost as interesting as Miriam Margolyes....

Then you should watch a compilation of her visits on the Graham Norton show. After watching that, if you still don’t see why she is so beloved, well, I’m afraid the problem is with you, not her.
