When the dam withstood previous flooding (2019, I think), they probably thought that was as bad as it could get. It sounds like generations of his family have lived there and run the store. They thought they were far enough away.

They took the RISK, again it was about 🤑
they need to look into suing the county... They were suppose to take care and keep it from Damaging Private Property.... Not getting a Contractor after the one they had refused to remove those logs and trees from the openings of the spillways is no excuse .. Others would have done the work and not worried about the dam going over. Could have done it by remote and cleaned out the logs.
The dam failed....water eroded the soil...house fell into the river...end of story:)

The store has been operating for over 100 years and is a state landmark destination. He and his family are the current owners and operators for the last 50 years. So far they are also the only family directly impacted by the dam breaching. There really isn't anything notable below it, the largest impact is expected to be ecological. The river ultimately will run into the Mississippi river, which is currently in a flood stage from the same storms that breached the dam.
