    I’ll say this. I got the xi5 because all my electronics were lowrance and i wanted to be able to use the autopilot features and it has worked fanstastc. Holds very tight spots in current, wind, etc. I’ve been very pleased with it.

    One vote for Xi5! I own one for about 3 years and have had no issues with it. One time it lost GPS signal due to heavy clouds and was calibrated again. Moreover I dropped it (hit a sunk tree) in 6 meters of water. It took me 3 hours to pull it out (with an anchor :)) and it is still working...

    Xi5 is a game changer for me,previously had minnkota but switched to xi5 linked to HDS9 Live,I can now fish small creeks and rivers with strong currents and winds hit anchor point and hold in one spot with no drifting around,could not previously do this as would drift about hitting snags etc 👎🏻 love my xi5 locks dead on and stays there 👍🏻🎣🐟

    Like some others have said: 1. Use same boat/engine for equal weight. 2. Have the anglers in the same place on the boat. One on the front deck and one on the back. 3. Have the boats come to a complete stop (as much as possible) BEFORE hitting the anchor lock. . Once both TM's settled in they held well enough. Boat position with that little difference will not be the reason you catch or do not catch fish. Jog a bit if you need to move 5'. One of the better videos for comparisons so far.

    One BIG difference here: The outboard motor on the Minn Kota is steered straight ahead, whereas the outboard motor on the Motorguide boat is cocked to one side. No matter what brand of trolling motor you buy, if you don't keep your outboard steered straight ahead into a wind, the motor will act like a rudder and "wag" left and right as was seen in the video. This was NOT apples to apples.

    I don't have either of these but I do know when the outboard engine is turned like the motorguide boat is, it will continually drift/curve that way. The MG boat engined is turned making the MG boat curve, thus work harder and less accurately. @Minn Kota - Control your variables for a fair comparison. It's called Science, look into it ;)

    A couple things here. One is the boat with the Xi5 is bigger and heavier than the boat with the Ulterra, making it harder to control. The other item is that the boat with the Xi5 appears to have "come in hot" forcing it to turn around and reset. If you still have forward momentum when you hit spot lock on either motor it will have to turn the whole boat around to find the spot. Clearly when the Xi5 found it's spot it stayed anchored just as well, but the spot was not on the bullseye shown, but where they hit the lock. I own an Xi5 and can tell you that if you have the boat not moving forward when you hit the lock it will hold you very tight and it happens almost instantly. I am glad to see the Ulterra has finally caught up to the Xi5 vs the inferior Terrova, which I have also owned. It tells you something when this is not an official Minnkota video, they have more integrity than to engage in a deceptive video like this.

  • @funfordturbo

    @funfordturbo

    7 жыл бұрын

    The Terrova not only has caught up to the Xi5 but is superior in every way. The Terrova has a lcd screen that shows your saved tracks spot locks speed etc... also its more accurate quieter and has a jog feature. Also the boat weight differences is only 240 lbs. The 19ft is 2050 and the 21 is 2295 the motors are the same. If there was a huge difference i'm not sure that a good argument. One could argue that just as its easier for the light boat to be re positioned by the motor its also more susceptible to being influenced by out side forces wind current etc. I have watched the video half a dozen times and i cannot see where the xi5 came in too hot. There are alot of customers that feel they have been slighted by minn kota because the first gen of these motors were crap. I just want to make sure that people that are now in the market know that the minn kota is now an option again.

    I have the xi5 in a 36v on a 18ft bay. I have never had mine move that much. I lock it in st Lucie inlet at full outgoing with a crosswind and it's always rock solid. don't know what's going on here. had to switch to the 36 because the 24 couldn't hang in the current if that tells you the amount of water moving. doesn't matter if I'm out on the wrecks offshore either. I sit directly over a spot for hours with the down and side imaging never changing. rock solid! never see the minkotas at the ramps either. maybe the new spot lock could change that. But my xi5 is the reason I haven't thrown an anchor in over 2 years. Great over the cobia spots. less time setting up and always first bait in the water. kinda makes you a lazy fisherman. didn't use the boat during the whole 24-36 volt swap. didn't want to fish like a pilgrim with an anchor!

    Ok, gotta comment here. Not a conclusive test! Compass calibration plays a big role in this. Notice the motor guide settles out a little behind and to the left of the center mark, but then stays there with reasonable accuracy. This can be attributed to compass calibration. If the motor guide was calibrated 500 miles away then the satellite angle would have some inherent discrepancies. REMEMBER! spot lock on any motor is only as accurate as its ability to discern triangulation from satellite signals. Most experienced users, myself included will tell you to calibrate every 100 miles of travel. Costs you 2 minutes time and will ensure accurate signal readings. The motor guide is factory calibrated in Wisconsin or wherever its made. Use it in Texas without a calibration then expect mediocre results. May seem picky but remember were trying to split hairs here. Both good units, but the motorguide I have does better than this video shows.

    Brian Mcclelland There is a procedure in the manual. Basically deploy the motor, put it in recalibrate mode and drive with the main motor in figure 8's until the trolling motor beeps.

  • @kirbytaylor3456

    @kirbytaylor3456

    7 жыл бұрын

    Brian Mcclelland sorry for not replying sooner. you can google the procedure to see how it's done. you push a key code combo on the FOB and then drive in circles with the main motor till the motor signals it's done. check your motor's procedure just to be sure. one other thing. after talking to a friend of mine in the millitary he also noted that the US Government does not allow any GPS device to be above a certain level of accuracy. there has to be an intentional amount of random error generation built into any device or your in violation of US Millitary laws. He gave me lots of reasons and scenarios as to why but won't bore you with the details. Its mostly terrorism related reasons. Bottom line. if you had a Minnkota and a Motorguide spotlocked 100 different times across the U.S. each will drift during certain instances. Sometimes not. Probably never more than 5 feet. Either way this current technology is so amazingly impressive it's just Awesome! Makes fishing beyond belief.

    I do have to comment on this, I own both motors I tried them both on the same boat the minkota its a good motor but not as accurate, its odd that its worst when there is no wind or current I have a Minkota power drive2 and it drifts 20 ft or more before it engages the prop to move back. The motor-guide keeps me closer to the where anchor it and when it drifts about 5ft it accelerates faster than the minkota. Now im not just going to put Minkota TM down it has planty of power, but it takes too long for the I-pilot to engage the prop and when it does you are 20ft or more away from the original spot. The other thing Minkota should look into is their hand held remotes if someone is between me and the motor it wont respond or if I'm all the way back on the boat it would do the same thing. in the end I like both TMs. I bought MOTORGUIDE because it links with my lowrance units and so far so good no complains yet.

    This wasn't my experience at all. I bought my boat used with a Min Kota that wouldn't hold me at all. Once "anchored" in any kind of wind or current, it would drift as far as 20' before it could catch back up with the correct location. It was slow to turn the prop on and keep me on spot. I sold it pretty quickly online and bought the Xi5. Now I stay on spot in any kind of wind or current. This is a bay boat and the first test was in a boat cut with a really strong current. This thing stuck to the spot like it was a real anchor and didn't drift like this video at all. I had the complete opposite experience.

    You're right, both Minn Kota Spotlock and Motorguide have spot lock features designed to hold your boat in position. They are excellent for stabilization, especially when fishing techniques require staying precisely on target. Here's a breakdown of Minn Kota Spotlock vs. Motorguide Pinpoint GPS (Motorguide's equivalent): Generally considered more accurate, some users claiming a 4-foot radius holding area. Offers integration with some fishfinder/GPS units for waypoint control. May have a slightly higher battery drain due to constant course correction. : Typically more affordable option. Users report a slightly larger drift radius compared to Minn Kota. Simpler controls for some users. Both Minn Kota Spotlock and Motorguide Pinpoint GPS will effectively stabilize your boat. Consider these factors for your choice: Motorguide might be a better choice if affordability is a major concern. Minn Kota might be preferable if pinpoint precision is crucial for your fishing style. If you already have a compatible fishfinder/GPS unit, Minn Kota might offer a more seamless experience. Hope it helps :)

    I call BS on this. I just got rid of my MK because it couldn't hold course, couldn't hold an anchor and was horrible at holding cruise control. I used the MK for 2 years and it would float 20 feet off the anchor point, the course would turn me in circles to the right no matter what lake almost as though the gps though right was straight, and my cruise when set at .5mph would fluctuate from .2 all the way to .9mph or more. It was terrible. Plus on the PDV2 you couldn't use the foot pedal with the FOB which made bass fishing a pain in the butt. I just got my MG Xi5 and holy crap what a difference. Doesn't move more than 3 feet from anchor point, stays on course and cruise control is solid at the exact speed I set it to. What a difference. In addition to that Lowrance has a much better interface with a much more user friendly screen as well as 3D sonar. Humminbird wants to charge the same per screen size as Lowrance but they don't even have the touch screens nor the sonar options. Lowrance and MG is the way to go.

    Alphahawk3 Either way my new Xi5 holds the spot much better than what this video indicates. If you watch closely enough the Xi5 head is turned to the right most of the time. Watch even closer and you will see the back end of the boat wandering back and forth even when the Xi5 is holding steady. This shows that this boats hull does not/is not tracking nearly as well as the Minnkota. If the hull doesn't hold the trolling motor will fight it no matter the brand.

    The fact that Minnkota had to re-do their spot lock tells you everything you need to know.

    I have not even watched this video through but I noticed something right away. Did anybody note that the MinnKota boat is 245lbs lighter with a slightly stronger trolling motor? This is not really apples to apples here... The Ranger 621 weighs 2295 lbs and the 619 only weighs 2050 lbs. The motors are not the same either. The motor on the 619 is only 225hp and the motor on the 621 is a 250hp. This will make the weight differential even larger. This test should be done on two boats of equal size and horsepower so there is no advantage.

    Nobody is talking about that the Ulterra costs 2x the money as the Motorguide. A more fair test would be Xi5 12 volt vs Terrova 12 volt.

    motorguide keeps minnKota on their toes and vise versa. This test proves nothing. You need to have two of same exact boats with the same exact configuration. With the same weight and balance. I may be brand loyal to minnKota but if motorguide has a feature that I need and is better. Then tough shit, I will go to the competitor .

    I own 2 XI5's. I immediately and physically noticed that the Motorguide must be programed to file/lock onto Lat/Lon anchor waypoints in less TIGHT /Specific GPS increments then the Minn-Kota seems to. This is not a big deal to me, as if need be, I simply use the direction feature to bump me in 10' increments to my precise marked or desired location. After that she stays put spot on. I also noticed the $800.00 difference I paid when buying both My motor guides. But maybe that's just me.

    So where the motor guide spotlock was activated it stayed exactly in that spot, arguably better than the minn Kota. The map you have up is arbitrary, and it’s pretty obvious where the motor guide was activated in relevance to where it stayed. The real question is why make something so deceptive? My thought is you know your product is inferior so you have to make deceptive advertising to prove how good it is. That is never a good look, and if it is better you don’t need to be deceptive, the product will do the talking for you.

    I have owned both the Xi5 and the Terrova with spot lock. The Xi5 is much better when it comes to the anchor. Mine locked in and held perfect. My terrova also has a problem holding a course when you use the Nav lock. It always wanders off. The Xi5 is locked on course and never varies. My Terrova came with my new boat and I am probably going to remove it and install the Xi5 I still own.
