Minivan Camper Conversion for a Couple (the Start of Minivan Life Canada!)

After purchasing a 2011 Volkswagen Routan to take us to the Arctic Ocean in Canada's far north and the Pacific Ocean in Canada's far west, it was time to build! We designed an entirely new bed platform, build window coverings and a curtain to ensure privacy while on the road - all with very limited tool selection! This minivan camper build would also work in Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles, as each vehicle has the same body and frame. It is also built with couples in mind - although make sure you like each other enough first! We have come to understand that the build is surprisingly spacious and flexible.
The exciting part about this is that it marks the beginning of our adventure! The build itself was simple, cost effective, and is removable for our vehicle to be converted back to a commuter minivan in short order. If you value being able to convert a minivan cheap and easy, we highly recommend picking up two planks of maple 3/4" plywood from Home Depot and giving this a go!
In our next video, we are planning on doing a bit of a minivan tour to share everything we are planning on taking with us, and showing just how much room we are going to have left! Considering we left to travel for a year with 35L backpacks, we are confident that the vehicle will have plenty of room for activities!

    Great idea. Asimilar option that is easier and uses less weight is to use large plastic bins for drawers. We put ours in so that they can be pulled out from the side. If you have a two person bed, a large under bed wrapping paper bin works well. You can put tote bags in. For the back row, I would suggest the back row two bins (cardboard boxes with duct tape reinforcement works fine). We make two bed frames and use one for single person, and another next to it for two people. For easy removal we keep the top plywood separate, except for one or two screws to keep it from sliding while traveling.

    This is a great way to travel. We have a little travel trailer that needs some work and I don't want to pull it very far. Last fall, we took the bed cushions out and threw them in the back of our Grand Caravan, with a cooler and a little butane burner, etc. We did a short trip around southern Ontario, hopping from one provincial park to another, and we had a great time. It was SO EASY. And so much fun. If we do a longer trip, we will build a platform so we can have storage underneath and that will make it even easier.

    Nicely done. I live in a Town and Country and yanked all but the front seats out of mine too. I wanted as much head space as I could get, so no platform for this chick. I'm able to sleep crossways between the sliders behind the front seats (I'm a whopping 5'4") on some 6 inch thick foam couch cushions. I just flip them over and move them to the back daily to keep the dreaded "couch sag" at bay. I envy your platform though. Kudos on the leveling work too!

  • @RichandKirsten

    @RichandKirsten

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey LovingLife! We did some reading into it and learned that “windows breaking” tends to refer to the heat coming off the reflection causing the butal in RVs to melt. As all our windows aren’t installed like RV windows we don’t think this problem will arise for us. We also only use the reflectix at night in our rear windows to block people from looking in and moderate the temperatures. From our research from other companies that make window coverings, many of them used Reflectix or Havelock Wool to achieve the same effect. Hope that helps!

    We have almost the same bed made for our Chrysler town and country. But the problem is I want to be able to make it so that I can make it like a couch. Then I’d have room to be able to sit in the rain instead of sitting in the front seats all the time. We’ve driven our van all the way from Washington to Florida and Alaska too with this bed layout. We had this set up for 3-4 years and we’ve never had a mold problem.

  • @decolonizeEverywhere
    @decolonizeEverywhere4 жыл бұрын

    Reflectix has almost no insulating value. The only way it works is if the reflective side is exposed to the sun and It has to be directly against the window. So you're covering them with that dark material isn't really going to insulate any more than if you use cardboard and wrapped it in fabric. In fact cardboard actually has a better r value. Unless it is reflected side against the window the r value is less than 1, But if the reflective side is against the window like You're supposed to use it It has an r value of about 4.

    Leveling the bed was a great idea, but those support blocks you positioned at the front will not be structurally sound over the long run between the shifting weight loads and removal of the platform from the van. Depending on fasteners to support you is never a good idea. The wood can split and crack, or the fasteners can shear. You need to have blocking underneath the vertical supports that bridges the gap from top to bottom. Get a couple of small scrap pieces of wood from HD's bargain bin and slip them under the bed tight to the holes and stick a pencil through the gap to scribe the cut you need onto the board. Get a neighbor with a saw to help you cut the wedges if necessary, or just purchase a small hand saw and leave the line you scribe so you can fine tune it during fitment. You can screw the new feet in from the bottom and then use the end pieces that you have in place already to secure the ends so they won't pull out during removal. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the advice! It's definitely a trial and error process for us! It's holding up pretty good right now. We're not expecting this to last long term, which is okay with us as we might want to make some modifications in the future, like building out a kitchen

  • @thejackal3245

    @thejackal3245

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@RichandKirsten oh definitely. Builds like yours are always fun because you get to figure out what works for you in a relatively inexpensive way, and then you can easily modify it. It might not be intended to last for a long time, but if you add that blocking, there's no real reason why it won't. You can also consider building a kitchen box so you can keep the modularity factor and have everything you need ready to go.
