Minister Caller | Atheist Experience 340

The Atheist Experience 340 2004-04-18 with Ashley Perrien and Jeff Dee.
Jeff Dee takes a minister to task for, well, just about everything. There's also come followup details at the end.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.

KZread comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZread comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

What they tend to mean is "read more Bible verses" (and ignore those pesky science texts.) The reasoning seems to be that somehow a larger quantity of nonsense will be more convincing than a representative sample. That's a bit like multiplying a large number of questionable probabilities together in the expectation that the result will converge to p=1.

@ci rob The people that were Christians and stop believing in God after reading the bible are not dishonest if they then claim to be atheist or agnostic, even if the bible is the only scripture they have ever read. By definiion an atheist is a person that doesn't believe in a God, and an Agnostic is a person that doesn't know there is a God. So if a Christians stops believing in the God of the bible and doesn't accept belief in any other God regardless of what studying they have done that person is without a belief in God, therefore by definition is an Atheist, and if that person also claims that they don't know that there is another God that person is also by definition an Agnostic. Just because an atheist hasn't studied every God claim doesn't make them dishonest, it would take more than one lifetime to read up on every God claim, but as long as you presently don't believe in any of them you are an Atheist. Richard Dawkins put it best when he said that Christians are also Atheist, just people that identify as atheists believe in one God less than you do. You can trasnfer various Gods into the Christian part of that statement, Atheists believe in one God less than Jews, Muslims, Mormons, and about 3million gods less than all Hindus. That being said that doesn't mean that an atheist is claiming that there is no God or Gods, just simply means they don't believe in any God that has been presented to them.

@ci rob ...did you see what I said ? I grew up with a Methodist family. My father was a minister. He he told me to read the bible. I decided that I would read one chapter in the old testament and the new testament everyday in the morning. It was habitual. I prayed before the reading everyday for wisdom. After the many years I read the bible over and over. Then I got. It was a man made story. And when I started reading about astrotheology...that was the icing on the cake. I did not come up with a quick conclusion about the bible. I looked for truth...and I found it. And now I'm free. Like I said... that bible really helped me a lot.

  • @24magiccarrot

@@scottblack8266 I didn't want to make my post too long by going into detail of every possible combination, I merely wanted to establish that just because someone stopped believing in one God, doesn't make them dishonest if they identify with the label that most closely reflects their current belief. Regarding Gnostic when it comes to Theist/Atheist I would highlight that this is claimed knowledge rather than any actual demonstrable justifiable knowledge. When I was a Christian I would claim that I knew there was a God, but looking back I now know that I had no cause to be so zealous in my position. And I would never hold the position that I know there is no God.

This 'minister' keeps saying: "No, no, you don't understand what I'm saying." The problem is the hosts understand perfectly well what he's saying - which is more than he does. Finally he says: "No, no, the problem is you are speaking out of ignorance." Which is pretty good from someone who keeps referring to 'the Barble', while simultaneously demonstrating that he barely knows the first thing about it.

Such a claim is a bit of manipulation as well, trying to preemptively take the moral high ground. But it's not a very effective strategy with skeptics, because we assume that all understanding is provisional, never complete. When he implies that his own understanding CAN be complete, he's already moved to a level of presumption that bears close scrutiny. It's not surprising that he later pulls the faith card.

@Skyler Janosek It's the Chistians who are gleefully anticipating the fire and 500 years ago they couldn't wait for God to do it, so they did it for him, in public. By the way, the reason for burning wasn't to hurt the heretic, it was to stop him or her being resurrected. They thought that God would not be able to reassemble a person if they've been burned. Basically, underestimating the power of God.

I went to church for 50 years. The more I became involved the more I become less enchanted. The Bible is just a book written by priests not God or whom ever. The injustices in there couldn’t possibly be written by any smart being. Keep up good work.
