I hope the Babadook ISN'T a gay metaphor/allegory, seeing as how the movie ends with a concerned mother, motivated by the desire to defend her child, returning her life to mostly normalcy by scaring the Babadook back into a closet.

In order to tame the babadook she has to confront it, and then she can live peacefully with it but can’t get rid of it. You could read the ending as a queer metaphor where one’s sexuality can be destructive if one doesn’t come to grips with it, and it’s something you can never get rid of, so you must learn how to live happily and peacefully as a queer person by embracing your sexuality. But this falls apart because it still relies on the babadook being an aspect of the mother in the story, and the mother in the story’s sexuality is barely touched upon, we know she was married and we know a nice guy tries to ask her out, that’s it.

I mean it clearly isn’t meant to be a queer allegory, but folks can read it that way if they want to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@@llcdrdndgrbdwell the thing about that is that subtextual readings of any story, from any subtext, are not related to the specific events in the story at all, but are representative of the experience of the group for which you are reading. A great example is in beastars with how Legoshi’s attraction to a taboo species, creating a romantic predator-prey relationship, is characteristic of the trials gay people have to go through in a community where that is taboo. Keith Ballard made a great, 3 hour-long video essay breaking that down in which he also explained the difference between text and subtext.

While I normally absolutely love trolling people, keep in mind there's a logical problem with it. Just like 4chan's Pol was originally claiming to be nazis to troll, if you act like an idiot long enough eventually you'll be surrounded by legitimate idiots that think they're in good company. The biggest troll argument of today may end up picked up by some honest idiots tomorrow, at which point it's not really trolling anymore.

There's a reason "it's satire, bro" is used to mock trolling, and you just put said reason on words. On top of that, the last line shows how trolling can be actively harmful: you think the people flabbergasted at the "the babadook is a gay man" take were straight conservatives? They were most likely allies. One's deadpan self-mockery can alienate it's allies and possible allies on the fringes, all to lightly bother their enemies. Of course, I'm not saying trolling - or any form of self-mockery, for that matter - is inherently good or evil. These things are tools, simply. But their effects might be different than what you expect.

@@alejotinganell5653 100% truly a tragedy, as was the misinformation and hate campaign that came Neon Yang's way too (They definitely weren't great, but they absolutely weren't in first and leading a charge). I genuinely love the story and found it an absolute revelation as both an exploration and critique of gender, spec sci-fi, and authoritarian governments/ military exploiting all aspects of peoples, especially marginalised folx. Every time this happens: "I can't tell if you're being sarcastic." "We are not, we are being 100% serious." "...okay, that *can't* be sarcastic." Like, if telling you that it's a joke would make the joke less funny, why would anyone do it just because they were asked?

It's also complicated because even amongst a group of trolls there may be some who are sincere, who may communicate in ways almost indistinguishable from the trolls around them. I feel like this gets into the complex of neoplatonic media/communication theory of distinguishing representations from what they represent.

This is surprisingly fascinating. As someone who heavily curates what they spend time on (as far as the Internet is concerned anyway) and who's probably too old to care much about getring involved in any Internet discourse, the gay Babadook thing completely passed me by. My daughter, on the other hand, absolutely knew that the Babadook was gay, despite not knowing what the Babadook was or even seeing the film. Interesting times indeed. Glad you're back and at least relatively sane, hope the dissertation is going well

This is going to be the most autistic thing I've said in a while, but your speech pattern is unbelievably cool. Your tone of voice and inflection carry such intensity, but never in an offputting way; rather, in the way that lets the keen listener know the things which cannot be said and invites them to share the feeling. When impassioned, your plosives hammer every word into being so expressively. It's very rare that just a voice cam evoke in me something so raw that I have a strong physical sensation in my chest and gut which I cannot fully comprehend. In short, your voice is pretty cool. I'll fight the envy and instead consider you a source of vocal aspiration. Mine certainly isn't yet what I'd like it to be. Though I'm an anonymous commenter, please allow the illusory me that exists in your mind one moment of transfeminine admiration and one moment more of sapphic longing before letting my words wash from your thoughts and forgetting about me forever. Keep doing what you do, in both the big and the small. You're the best damn writer on this side of the internet.

I know you're not asking me, but I think it's a perfect distillation of how they don't understand anything and that parcelling that knowing nothing into little soundbites that equate to verbally putting your fingers in your ears and signing obnoxiously loudly helps them and others continue to not engage their brains. It's an example of a lot slogans, especially right wing, but everyone does it, that amount to AI generated call and response that all just translate to 'I'm in this group/ Not in that group'. RuPaul is a divisive figure, what with commercialising of Queerness, reducing the broad spectrum of drag to variations of one thing, and the whole having fracking ranches thing (he slays, he's my Queer sibling, but seriously, fuck that guy), but he's not wrong when he says, "We're all born naked and the rest is drag". Everything everyone does is a performance, regardless of how innate and true to the self it is. The fact that society insists that's not the case and all of the everything is cool and normal and good, actually, rather than monkeys playing pretend, is exactly why clowns exist. They are the mirror and mocking reminder, as Mariana talks about in another video. Queer people and anyone who doesn't fit society's expectations and demands are all clowns. And clowns, and the mirror, make these people incredibly uncomfortable because they refuse to ever recognise the LARP that is life. Those crazy kids just so happen to be so far from the point that they are actually right on the money!

@moharak Art is meant to reflect the person watching it. If a piece is meant for mass consumption, but cannot reflect a significant portion of society, than it's failing on its point of mass appeal. The only reason a queer interpretation is viewed so differently than others is because of our heteronormative society. The queer interpretation does not invalidate others, it's merely a lens for us to consider the implications from this point of view.
