Original Black Magic Pocket : MINIMALIST $500 Camera
Subscribe so you will never miss a video: bit.ly/2wZGI36
In 2014, Blackmagic Design introduced the original pocket cinema camera to the prosumer videographer market. Aiming to compete against companies like Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Panasonic, they provided all of the features of a high-end professional cinema camera for 90% less than the cost of a typical professional cinema camera.
The original pocket cinema camera can be purchased for just under $500. However, finding one of these cameras can be a potential challenge due to the discontinuation of this product in late 2015. There are unofficial rumors about how Blackmagic Design decided to discontinue the camera to avoid a potential lawsuit. They may have been unaware when releasing the camera containing the Codec Apple ProRes HQ that the patent was already owned by another popular cinema camera manufacturer, RED.
So if you find yourself in the research phase, attempting to learn as much as you can about this camera so that you may make a well-informed and educated purchasing decision, stick around and watch through the end of this video to find out what I'd do if i found one of these for sale. By the end of this video, you will know if this camera is right for you to invest in.

    Great list. I have 3 extra tips: I find if you need slow motion, you can use the 30p raw option with 90 degree shutter or faster and use resolve’s optical flow. Because of the high bitrate you mostly get footage without strange warpy artifacts. You do need a fast laptop tough. Second tip is to buy slimraw plugin to offload your footage. This way your cinema dng footage can be just as small an flexible as Braw. And last tip is to use the small sennheiser mke 200 mic. It has a really small profile with integrated shock mound and windjammer. And turns your scratch audio from 1920 telephone to ‘just’ usable.

    Some errors in the first few minutes already. RED does not own a patent to Apple ProRes HQ. They have a patent on lossy "raw" video compression in camera. The cDNG in the original pocket is lossslessly compressed. it does not have a micro four thirds sensor, you probably mean mount. The sensor considerable smaller. And Fuji does not have a micro four thirds sensors and mount. They have either APC-S or 44x33mm (medium format). it might be the case that some APS-C camera record video from a windowed sensor, which equals the MFT or dS16 size of other cameras. "High bitrate of depth" is confusing bitrate and bit depth.

    I know right? It’s like he didn’t even know the very basics of the camera itself. “KZread filmmakers” repeat a lot of what they hear on other videos I’ve noticed, and everyone is an expert yet they get the most important part of this camera - the “Fairchild super 16” sensor wrong. Literally the reason people buy this thing. Find a better channel mate 🫡

    Hey Patrick, I hope all is well. Here is how you will find a cage. 1.) Join a Facebook for the BMPCC 2.) Express your interest in the cage 3.) Someone will sell you a cage 4.) Someone from UK will send you links You are correct. They are discontinued. The only place you will find them is if you find somebody who already has one. And brother there are a lot of people with cages for this camera waiting to sell their used gear :) This is how I found just about everything for my setup. Did this help?

    Hey there! Absolutely. Google search a camera shop near you. The chances are they have several in stock. That way you can buy them in person and yet it out before you walk out the door. That’s what I did. There is a shop in Raleigh NC that has a dozen. I picked the best one. However, mine stopped focusing so it’s useless now. I wish they made these again…

    Am looking at one for €500 with a month of warranty. So I can use it fully, for a month, and see if something was actually kaput while I bought it. BUT, I'm out of money and I want to go into movie making. and I kinda buy either: something like the bmpcc that I like, Or buy a camera which can earn me money, thus a modern hybrid is probably better in that case.

  • @CodyScott

    @CodyScott

    2 жыл бұрын

    With the pro 6K no I do not find a need for it because it is part of the camera internally. With the original yes, it would be helpful to have an IR filter. However it is not needed. Blacks are cleaner when kept at 800 iso or lower

  • @hbp_

    imho it's mostly a problem with cheap ND filters that don't filter IR well enough. Now does it make sense to use an ND filter set potentially costing more than this camera? probably not 🤪

  • @hbp_

    @hbp_

    This camera doesn't offer compressed RAW (afaik) but we know RED has a patent on that for compressed RAW on camera. That's at least the reason why most manufacturers don't have compressed RAW in their current models and why ProRes RAW is not used by any camera manufacturer. (those that support compressed RAW only do it with an external recorder) DJI almost released their latest camera with ProRes RAW and Apple announced it too but then it was cancelled. URSA and URSA Mini 4K had compressed cDNG but according to some rumors BMD almost got sued for those and the products didn't receive any further updates. BRAW is an (apparently successful) effort to do things differently and avoid the patent.

  • @hbp_

    My favourite sensor out of all the cameras I have. I own 2 but I wouldn't recommend the BMPCC. It's so poorly built, it just feels like it will break into pieces. The batteries on both of mine no longer work so you have to rig out the camera. The rear screen is so poor it's very hard to see if you have nailed focus when outdoors and you can forget about recording audio on this thing. Also on one of them the HDMI mini port is broken and is rattling around somewhere in the camera body. The fact that I have to rig out the camera, carry a Sony battery and can barely see what I'm recording due to the poor screen has seen me take out the camera less and less.
