Back in 2008, my mother passed away and we had to go through her things prior to selling her apartment. I was heartbroken and there was a lot of crying however, I did get rid of 95% of her belongings. Most were donated including old kitchen supplies. My husband accused me of not being sentimental and I told him that my feelings for her went beyond pots and pans-end of discussion. Thanks again for your wonderful channel.

An alternative pov: I was minimalist until I also married someone who felt uncomfortable in "hotel-like spaces" meaning not sort of padded with memory-provoking art, textures. I was not sentimental. But I came to understand for people without good recall, the object *facilitates* memory, which facilitates and invokes feeling. My spouse *needs* a space that has these things to be able to access memory. And as I've aged myself I understand much more fully the power of objects to help in recall. One could make an argument that if you don't readily recall something it isn't worth remembering ... but to me it's become about the energy stored in objects- the pillowcases my grandmother embroidered aren't my grandmother, but some of her art, her mind, lives on in her handiwork. My own memory has grown faulty, and I'm surprised now at how some things that have narrowly evaded being decluttered have grown more meaningful to me.

I think I understand what you're saying. I have art work and photos on my walls from people and places where I've travelled. They keep them fresh in my mind. And being on my walls, I dont mind less clutter on horizontal surfaces. Besides, with the memories on my walls, I feel surrounded by people and experiences that enriched my life.
I like your comment about passing on things to your son if he wants them. I see so many people keeping things for their children without seemingly thinking that their children might not want them.

Boy, so true. When my mom died, we had a house with three generationsʻ worth of stuff, plus the barns, plus the land and all the farm equipment to figure out what to do with. It took the four of us siblings who are still alive, two weeks, four times, in the space of a year, to get it all done. My mom saved (literally) **everything** . As I was growing up I was the one who said "let me clean out the cabinets for you, Mother!" -- and the last time I did that, as a teenager, was the last time it got done for 40+ years. I told her I didnʻt like how messy the house was. She told me that this was *her* house, and that someday Iʻd have *my* house, and then I could keep it the way I wanted -- but this was *her* house and *her* way. So, okay then. But WE were the ones who had to clean it all up. Two of my siblings wanted to keep everything of hers. I wanted a few things, but kept very little. We filled-to-overflowing two huge dumpsters full of stuff. Everything was so used and worn out, nothing much had any value anymore.

So true.... what use would my sons have of photos of people they never knew. Now that I’ve hit 60 I felt it was time to let past memorabilia go..... straight to the charity shops. My apartment feels light and fresh now without all the clutter... and so do I 😊
I agree with you wholeheartedly! You don't have to have things to love or remember someone from the passed. Love is in your heart not in bins and closets 🙂 When my husband became empty nesters sold our large 3500 square foot suburban home I moved into a uptown 1300 square foot condo, we sold, gave away and donated 95% of our possession. There was no regret or unhappiness, we kept what was important and really loved, the rest was just stuff. I took photographs of some things that were wonderful memories but didn't want to keep, I have the pictures to remember. But in all honesty I rarely look at them anymore , the past is the past I live for today and look forward to our future 🙂🍁 Great content!!!

This past year I had to clear out my parents house that they lived in for 50 years. It was a heartbreaking task. There was so much STUFF it was impossible to know what was really valuable to them. I don’t want my own daughter to ever have to go through that turmoil with my stuff. Thank you for being a source of inspiration. I don't get the types who are hardcore about minimalism and counting the number of things while depriving themselves. The whole concept seems more meaningful when it's just about having the right amount of stuff you like, use, and can easily maintain.

I love minimalism. I cannot stand clutter, I absolutely hate clutter. I don't like to have lots of things around me, cluttered places actually upset me. I do not understand why many North Americans think that decorating means filling every available space with "stuff." The most important thing in a home (besides its occupants) are space and light, and neither should be compromised imo.
I like how you’re straightforward and choose every word you speak at a necessary level. That’s true minimalism.
Wisdom in minimalism is not just “less things”, it’s a philosophy of being happy.. Thanks for sharing.

"...things that bring no value to my life." I think that phrase captures my journey to downsize and declutter...whatever everyone else calls it doesn't matter as long as I am happy. Thank you, Benita!
Having grown up an Army brat, we were always paring down, anticipating the next move. It just seemed natural to live minimally. My ex-husband always had too much of everything, but he became somewhat of a hoarder after retirement. The day my car sat outside in a foot of snow while his stuff sat snug and dry in the garage, I knew it was time to part. No more fighting about clutter, mice and bugs.

For those minimizing on family letters, photographs or other historically valuable objects. Please check with your local (city, region, province/state, country) museums to see if they would like to add them to their databases. Even if they don't want to keep them, they might want to scan them. These personal artifacts are incredibly valuable for those studying sociology, architecture, art, history or anything else that requires a look into the past. Happy decluttering and simple living!

Hi Benita! I'm from Portugal and i've been watching your videos. The more we get rid of things we don't need, the more we live in peace and harmony. Greetings from Portugal.
One small photobook capturing key moments from your life with some explanatory text is a good option rather than individual photos or albums. It will become a treasured item once the memories fade in old age, and will help future family members should they want to do a family tree or learn more about the people who came before them. I am forever grateful to my own mother (born in 1923) who wrote a book about her life growing up and our early family life. in her 80s and 90s, Mum spent many happy hours reading the book and also reading it aloud to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Of course, we don’t need that book to remember our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, but when I read it her voice comes back to me along with many happy memories of a life well lived.
Just watching your surroundings make me feel calm. I’ve been going through my things more and more re-evaluating what I own and want to keep. Strange how people can be judgemental about minimalism. Why wouldn’t it be different for everyone?! 🙂

Minimalism is a way of life common in Scandinavia(Sweden, Denmark, Norway and North of Germany), as someone who comes from Portugal and lived in Sweden in 90s is a very simple way of decorating and dressing in a much simple and pure way. Even before Minimalism become the word du jour in the 90s with Jill Sander( by the way she comes from Hamburg but always lived in Schleswig -Holstein) which by the way used be to Denmark. As this Nordic countries are Lutheran if you go to a Lutheran church they are the exponent of Minimalism(because all is simple there is no subterfuges like in our Catholic churches. I personally love Minimalism but is my own Minimalism. I simple love your videos because it makes remember the apartment of my former Swedish in Law ( Sven & Elsa Lavermark).

I agree on everything apart from not keeping photos and memories of being a teenager. I had everything stolen (my entire house and belongings.....long story) on my 30th birthday many moons ago; I long for those lost photos and memories (wedding day, birth of my only son, etc). Essentially, my life started from scratch from that day forward, as I did not own a single item ''post theft' (apart from my car and the clothes I stood up in). Although in hindsight it was quite liberating in some ways, it saddens me so much in others.....long lost photos of my best friend and I, who was killed in a road accident when she was just 16 years old 😪 I would probably call my situation 'forced minimalism' which probably is not the same thing as choice.

I’m so sorry you had to go through that!
Benita, you've inspired me! After watching this I got out the large plastic container of photos I've had since my mother passed and started going through them - it was surprising how many of them I was able to throw away without feeling pang! Blurry, faded, meaningless landscapes, duplicates and tons of people I don't know (from my mom) or that, frankly, don't matter to me. I aim to reduce that number until I can fit them all in a single photo album which I actually might look at once in a while - when you have a whole carton of photos you think you're saving all these memories but, at least for me, it was just overwhelming and I haven't looked at them in years (though that didn't stop me from feeling guilty that I should sort out that box 'one day'). Much better to have a small number of what is truly meaningful. And, of course, by taking responsibility, I won't be leaving it for other people sort out when I pass...as always, hugs, best wishes and thanks from cold, sunny Chicago!
My signal that I need to declutter an area is when I have to move something to get to something else (which is my pet peeve). The second is taking pics of an area and looking at it. That avoids "getting used to an area's clutter". Like fresh eyes on a space. The last is use. That was helpful with my nail care drawer. I realized that I just don't paint blue on my nails anymore, nor orange or sparkles. lol Just got rid of it.
I hope you kept those letters, photos and select family items for your son. I absolutely treasure such things that my parents left behind, far more than they did. They were minimalists--my Mother loved Danish modern and Japanese furniture and decor and her house looked a lot like your apartment!--and it surprises me that they didn't purge them, but my Dad did have a real sentimental streak, thankfully. I am roughly midway between you and my Mom and a clutterbug LOL. I don't have too much trouble getting rid of 90% of "stuff" but if I'd been able to have a child, I definitely would have given them the choice of what to do with family mementos. Photographs and letters are particularly precious. After you are gone, it might really mean something to your son to read letters you wrote when you were young. I also believe it's important to keep such things for memory purposes. It's optimistic to say that you remember so why keep the images etc...but living with someone who has Alzheimer's as I do, I am sadly aware that memory is no more durable than the fragile organ which contains it. It's actually been very comforting and helpful to my husband to see images of people and places from his past, even if he doesn't consciously remember them anymore.
Greetings from the Desert! Always look forward to your videos, Benita, as your content is always thought provoking. I recently rid of a box of photos from my childhood and kept only two. I have one photo I have is of my parents on their wedding day. What makes it even more special is that it includes both sets of immigrant grandparents. So when I feel my "American Life" is stressing me out, I look to that picture knowing that my maternal grandparents came from Madeira Island to the U.S. with nothing. My paternal grandfather came to America with his parents from Sicily with nothing and my paternal Grandmother was sent with her four siblings from Ireland to live with relatives after they had been orphaned. Usually that's enough for me to get over myself and move on! lol

I think it’s difficult to downsize photographs of the family. As I started my family in 96 , I had a lot repetitive images. So I took them out of albums and selected the best of that year and put them in time dated envelopes. This means the children can follow their childhood but neatly kept in a shoebox.

I’ve been decluttering for about 5 years but I also love home decor & have way too many pillows, blankets & picture frames. I’ve made good progress though.
Loved this, and loved the questions at the end: yes, I would like a calmer, more focused life. But I live with a semi-hoarder. Big win -- he has agreed to downsize his books and papers, so that is a start.

My furniture now is clean, and I love your videos. So minimalism is inside before it is outside. Love your videos !
I am pretty much a minimalist. Always have been. I may have cleared horizontal surfaces, but I do have paintings and artwork and photos on my walls. Not a lot, I keep most of them in a storage and swap them out every few months. But my paintings, artwork and photos are either from people I care about or from travels throughout my life. This way,, I am always surrounded by wonderful experiences and love - all I have to do is look at my walls.
I think I too have always been a minimalist at heart. Well before "Minimalism" became a buzz word, I would often say, "Keep only what you need and only what you love." I still follow that doctrine.

Hello, Benita! I love seeing a notification that you have posted a video. My husband and I are somewhat minimalist, and I found this video to be very inspiring. As spring comes, it is the perfect time to evaluate what I own. I will blame the pandemic, but I find myself feeling more and more sentimental about cards and such from my parents. Pre-pandemic, I stayed with them at least once a week, and it's been nearly one year since I've spent any good amount of time with them or hugged them. Somehow, the cards are serving as a placeholder until I can give them both big hugs. I hope that you are well.

Back in the 90s it used to be called simple living or voluntary simplicity, it‘s always appealed to me tho‘ perhaps not quite as strongly as current extreme minimalism; I am a lot more sentimental and my own and my family history are very important to me and my three daughters. But I have always avoided overcomplicated gadgets or large unwieldy furniture, preferring the simplest and nicest quality available to me! I enjoy your aesthetic (I used to follow your blog) even if it would be too stark and modern for me personally. I agree that things shift as we age, too, we need less and less.

I am trying to apply minimalism in my own life -- but I live with someone who is the absolute opposite, just like you said in this video! He likes to collect and is constantly bringing things home because they were free, or because he thinks they might be useful "one day." It drives me crazy! I wonder if you can make a video with tips on how to compromise and live with a person like this while pursuing minimalism yourself, especially when it comes to keeping your shared spaces visually decluttered. Thank you and love the channel!

Compromise is the name of the game. I did it for 20+ years.
Great video and ideas as always! Thank you, Benita!
An interior designer told me that the minimalism trend is over...And people will be re-filling their homes w/ things (“clutter”) in 2021. 😄🤣. The anti-consumerist, minimalist, social media detox and capsule wardrobe movements, etc, are a threat to retail and big tech companies.

It’s not a trend, it’s a lifestyle though.

It's a trend for many people. With so much death this past year, many who lost loved ones will be confronted with that space of grief where you want objects your departed one loved surrounding you. This, I read, is why designers are predicting an end to minimalism-in-name-only.
I’m just getting into minimalism! And your channel is great! Thanks for all the tips Benita!
I love your kitchen❤

Thank you for another great video!
Thanks for posting!
amazing video once again Benita! I love your recommendation of "Decide what minimalism is to you"; not many people mention this. Minimalism is different for everyone and it should be based on you wants and needs. :) cheers from Canada!
