Two Rolex watches face-off as we compare the Rolex GMT Master 2 116710LN to the Rolex Explorer 2 216570. Although mechanically similar, both composed of stainless steel, and only 2mm distinct in size, these two Rolex sports watches are worlds removed in character and style. The Rolex Explorer 2 is a loving 21st century tribute to the Rolex Explorer II 1655 "Steve McQueen." True, Steve McQueen likely never wore a 1655, but the nomenclature nicely describes the vintage Rolex "Orange Arrow" dial style exemplified on this Explorer 2; the "Polar" white dial arrived with the Rolex 16550 during the mid 1980s. This Explorer II 216570 launched at Baselworld 2011 on the 40th anniversary of the 1971 1655. A Rolex caliber 3187 automatically provides 48 hours of power reserve, COSC Swiss chronometer precision, and toughness worthy of a Rolex Submariner.
The Rolex GMT Master II 116710LN launched at Baselworld 2008 as the steel variant of Rolex's pilot's watch. Its Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert was a first for Rolex, and the new case profile - squared off and sheer - would become known as there "super case" among Rolex collectors. Mechanically, the Rolex GMT Master is nearly identical to the Explorer II, but the use of a GMT or "pilot's bezel" allows the GMT Master to indicate three time zones when the 24-hour hand is set to Greenwich Mean Time. The Green GMT hand and green "GMT Master" script are signatures of this generation of GMT-Master II.
The Rolex GMT-Master II features a 40mm stainless steel case surrounding a black dial on a stainless steel Oyster bracelet with folding buckle. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, date and GMT. The watch also measures 12.1mm in thickness and 48.1mm from lug-to-lug.
The Rolex Explorer II features a 42mm stainless steel case surrounding a white dial on a stainless steel Oyster bracelet with folding buckle. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, date and GMT. The watch also measures 12.4mm in thickness and 50.2mm from lug-to-lug.

Do you like these mini-Versus? I'm able to film quite a few more than with the produced versions that air on Sunday. Also, this format permits me to shoot less mainstream watches (think Rieussec vs. JLC Master Chrono) that might not be viable in a produced segment for commercial reason. Please let me know in the comments below. Best, Tim

Nice review, Tim. When Rolex initially developed the GMT with Pan Am, there was no independent GMT hand - it was just an AM / PM indicator that was tied to local time. So, a moveable bezel was needed. When the movement was upgraded so that the GMT hand could be set independently, the moveable bezel was not longer needed on the GMT watch and the Exp II became a true dual time GMT watch itself. The Exp II is the meanest baddest Rolex, outside of the water, and has a better protected movement than the GMT. As a pilot, you do not want that bezel moving, as it may create confusion, since the GMT hand will be pointing to ZULU time. The PCLs on the GMT are easily scratched as well. The GMTs are great looking bling watches, but the Explorer II is the real deal. If you want a good 3-time zone watch, consider the Franck Muller Master Banker.

Great video as always Tim! For me it's the Explorer II all day long. I've had both and quickly parted with the GMT. I actually prefer the GMT in pictures and in the hand, but on the wrist the Explorer II is so much better. 42mm is the perfect modern size sports watch. I had a really hard time seeing the 24 hand on the GMT Master II, where as you can't miss the big orange 24 hand on the Explorer II. Much less common and one of the last tool watches in the lineup.

I once had a choice to buy a Batman GMT or an Explorer II polar. I'm very glad I went with the Explorer 2. Yes, the Batman is now worth more but I bought my watch to wear, not to resell. The GMT master 2 is just too pedestrian. I wear this watch with anything. I have more respect for this watch for the fact that it is the only tool watch that Rolex do not make in gold. The way it should be

Great comparison! Well spoken (no ummms or ahhhs) and solid camera work. I am considering trading my 1987 GMT for an Explorer 2 and found your video. I have a smallish wrist and really like my 38mm Vintage Accutron 214s (Astro) and my GMT I. Gonna have to try an Explorer 2 (love the white face and orange hand) and see if it is too big for me. May have to get a pre-2011 model (I think they are 40mm) as it might be smaller.

IMO keeping track of 3 time zones on a wristwatch is a bit silly when you can have 6 listed by city at a glance on your cell phone. They are both gorgeous watches but the Explorer II is something special and perhaps more practical in the modern world.

The same choice as yours - the polar white Explorer II. If I had to buy a Rolex to add to my collection, this is the only Rolex I would buy. It has excellent legibility with the black edged luminescent hour markers and orange 24-hour hand. The cyclops magnifier has a better proportion and does not stick out that much to attract attention in the polar white model compared to other Rolex watches that use the cyclops magnifier for the date.

GMT II for me as I've tried the Polar Explorer II (surprisingly on display in Harrod's when I visited London last May) and I just could not pull off the 42mm case. Beautiful watch and actually more interesting as the white dial Rolex sports watch is not your usual Rolex... but at the end of the day, you go what feels right on your wrist and the 40mm GMT II is exactly that when I wear it. Cheers!

The 42mm Ex2 has been controversial to say the least. I wouldn't be shocked if the 42mm Explorer 2 ends up being a one-generation watch. Downsizing a-la-Day-Date 2 might come into play when Rolex decides to refresh this line. Best, Tim

I have a vintage GMT and a new explorer 2 polar. To me the EX2 is the last true Rolex tool watch. It’s chunkier, sturdier, easier to use and dare I say it actually does a second time zone function better than a GMT. According to Rolex the parashock absorbers are 50% better than the Kiff system, but I don’t know if that’s strictly true. I don’t know why (maybe because they’re more available) but I’m seeing more and more people getting into the EX2. Pre-owned price is going up, a big watch podcaster just swapped his batman for a black *and* a white dial! People these days say Rolex is just a marketing brand and has lost it’s way, well if you’re yearning for the good old days, I’d say Rolex still has one last trick up it’s sleeve! Ps: I bought my 216570 a few weeks ago from the Rolex boutique themselves. They took off the stickers and are holding on to the warranty card for a year. This is the new reality in the U.K. and you won’t get that with Govberg/Watchbox! Thanks again Tim, love your work. If you’re in London let me know and I’ll buy you a scotch!

Great comparison, Tim. The only thing that I don’t like about the six digit reference Explorer II is that darn orange. Orange belongs on the Milgauss. I’d choose the 116710LN on this one.

Actually, the orange hand was on the original 70s Explorer 2 1655. I actually love it and would gladly trade in my old Explorer 2 16570, if the new one wasn't so damn big!

I had the Explorer II (black dial) for quite some time now. I have to admit, while I did buy the watch pre-owned, I paid more for this watch than I ever thought I would. I do enjoy the watch. It keeps perfect time and I keep it in a well used rotation of my watch collection. However, am having some second thoughts about the watch due to the price. I paid $4,525. I think for that price, I expected it to do magic tricks or something spectacular other than just telling the time. I have some Seiko's for example that seem better built, tell just as good time and cost a fraction of this Rolex. I am not cheap or desperate for money, but I am considering selling this watch, pocketing some money and maybe buying another watch (or two}. As I said, I really like the watch, but I feel the watch is overpriced and I do have a touch of buyer's remorse. Any thoughts on what my major malfunction is?

Love the Exp II Tim. Just wished it came in at 40 mil. I have the older GMT 16700. Love that version because of the lighter case weight and light bracelet. It really wears well on a smaller wrist.

The GMT Master wins hands down. Not counting the looks and size differences, the watches are basically the same (same movement), but the GMT Master has a rotating bezel which increases the functionality of the GMT Master significantly over the Explorer II.

Two very robust, well designed, sports-tool watches, one is more upscale than the other. You can't go wrong with either one, but in this scenario, I prefer the one with the ceramic bezel. Hopefully the Explorer II will get updated in next year Basel to have a ceramic bezel.
