I could see this being potentially useful with a voltage regulator and some ni-cad solar cells, not high capacity, but at least it isn't a capacitor? And could perhaps also add a solar cell? Seems like a fun project to learn with, but not for field use.

@@jc4359 I am down for the solar capacity, but you see, the batteries do degrade and theoretically the capacitors could outlive the batteries, cycle wise. I could see a device like this being used 100 years from now with little maintenance, but if you throw most battery types in the mix you have only a few years before the device needs a major servicing or battery replacement.

@greatscottlab fan here, Im not sure that those capacitors hold enough charge/mah (mili amps/hour) to charge a phone, unless there is a battery in it or an external power source. One thing i noticed was that the voltage of the battery does not change while charging the phone which means it can supply more than 1-1.5 Amps of electricity. Another thing tho is that he is using Supercapacitors which do a linear discharge which means the voltage drop is proportional to the power draw so using a LiPo battery or another type of energy storage would have been better. Nice idea and concept. edit: Thanks for the 100 likes!

Been used probably since before you were born. And I'm not assuming you're all that young. The hard part is choosing the right amount of capacitance. If it's really high, it takes a long time for the voltage to reach a useful level, but it lasts longer. If it's low, the voltage gets high enough sooner, but doesn't last long at all.
