In this video, France draws her grandmother. "I really enjoy drawing a much older face," she says. "There’s something absolutely irresistible about drawing a face that has traveled."

During my military career During the Vietnam War Era, I was fortunate to draw for the Stars and Stripes publication. I too enjoyed using what was reasonably like the modern day Sharpies & what my precious daughter bought me, Prismacolor Premier markers. You are wonder teacher. God bless you always.

I wanted to start a comic military paper for our base, Ft. Ord. Instead of the banner with an eagle, y would be the Kiwi bird, from the shoe polish tins. The name of the rag would be, The Honorable Discharge. This was around 1972.

Thank you for your service, Welcome Home
Not only is your drawing amazing and inspiring, but your voice is absolutely wondeful to listen to. I appreciate that you talked while drawing as opposed to a voice over recording, and that you didn't put any background music, so that we also get to hear your hatching. Love the authenticity!

Great news! Here's her crosshatching class: shop.sktchy.com/products/crosshatching-with-france-van-stone
Legit, I just subscribed for the very reason you're not flexing on fancy paper and pens. Some artists draw most on what's common around them. Thank you for keeping it real.
early on when I started picking up sketching again, I did fall into the trap of thinking better equipment = better skills. I spent a bunch and realized that I preferred the simple pens/pencil that I had used to draw casually all throughout highschool, college. haven't spent a dime on pens since... but sketch books, oh, i don't cheap out on those. 😂
I use cheap material because I also want to emphasise that to achieve good results you don’t need to spend a lot money. Wowawsome Miss Van Stone

The price of your equipment has no impact on the quality of your art.
Marvelous video thank you, i appreciate your direct and uncomplicated approach to drawing! I've been making flat crosshatching but never thought to curve the lines and leave the highlights absent of ink :-) Merry Christmas from the US and have a wonderful year ;-)
A hands-down WOW!
Absolutely stunning! I wish so much to take your course. Unfortunately I am medically disabled and have absolutely no income. I am so happy you have given us some tutorials to show us your process. I want to learn so much from you! Working strictly in pen is how I started my art journey only a year and a half ago. I'm so happy I did that because I have learned not to fear it and to work my "mistakes" into my piece and not get hyper focused on tiny details. I also jumped off by drawing 100 hands in 30 days. I knew artists tended to complain about how difficult hands were for them so I took that as a challenge and am confident in that area. Depth and values are very different me. I wa born without depth perception so I have really struggled with creating it in my art. I have really loved seeing how incredible people can make something with just a ball point pen! I love scribble art and cross hatching and stippling. Funny, for someone without depth perception you'd think I'd be more drawn to cartoons or comic book type stuff. But I hated cartoons as a kid and haven't found that genre interesting to me at all, although I have a great deal of respect for it now. I truly love your work and the way you stop when you feel you have captured the likeness and are happy with it which keeps you from overworking it or making it like everybody else's art. Thank you for sharing some of your process here.. I wish so much I could take your class. But I am stuck with KZread and IG which have been wonderful in my study of art and the tutorials are absolutely fantastic! I know your class will do amazing things for many artists out there. It's wonderful when an artist of you caliber offers to pass down their knowledge and experience to budding artists like me.
Thank you
Love your work
Fascinating!!!
It’s interesting that you simply started drawing features without blocking out the larger picture. Looks good.
Thanks great demo
Beautifully done.
Beautiful!!!! Woooooooow you are so talented and an amazing teacher ! Thank you ❤
Great work! Thanks!
Love your tutorial! unlike other channels, you just come to point of drawing demo , so we can follow you step by step until the drawing ends. Of course I know we are not good enough to reach your level , but through such practice we can find our problems. Well done ! Thanks !
Thank you!!! Great lesson.
Brilliant.
Phenomenal- thank you for the inspiration!

A real Artist ❤️
Amazing, inspiring, just awesome
Frances is simply amazing... she has the necessary patience to cross-hatch and her drawings come so realistic.

Just found you - and I felt immediately in love with your art!

That was amazing and truly inspiring I’m definitely going to put my pen to the test
Brilliant. Thank you for sharing this with me 💜. Going to give it a go 😊
Masterful sense and execution of light and shade and shape. Bravo !
very interesting and accessible. Not overcomplicated. Like it.
Cool drawing technique! I want to try drawing like this too.
Amazing work
Wow! ❤
Just awesome.....❤️. Very happy helpful 😊
thank you very much from Italy
c'est très beau, merci !
awesome 👏
Beautiful.. n really good tutorial.
Thanks for sharing❤❤❤❤
Thank you for this! I've only picked up drawing about a month ago, but I've been experimenting with cross-hatching. This helped to show me that I need to put some distance between my lines.
Wonderful! thanks for sharing. SUBSCRIBED!😍
Really very impressive work, I have never tried this technic, but appreciated often. Seeing your video, I am now encouraged and will definitely try. Thanks for sharing. Namaste.
Unusual beginning to drawing, but turning is what i do... I love it...😊
I like the way that the gel pen actually adds ‘character’ with the blotches and skips. Im left handed, and most gel pens simply quit on me when ‘pushed’ too much, however that’s when writing. With hatching, i should be able to continually pull… will give it a try. Thanks for this mini- lesson.
Those are some of my favorite pens. You can also use different gage's to get different results. Great tutorial.
Those contour lines on the nose bridge reminds me of the printmaking drawing style used on American paper money. Always wanted to try that method.
It's good lesson, thank you

Very good skill
🎉 excellent
I like your black nails, it really comes forwards in this tutorial
Yor sketch is Very very good ❤
🎉❤very nice
Just discovered your channel, love the idea of using a "cheap" pen to create. Pushing the pen to its limits is like when we get our best results by pushing ourselves to our "known" limitations. I do classic and race cars, cross hatch and stippling are a big part of the process to for texture, depth and dimension. My normal pens are the Pigma Micron 0.005, 0.01 - 0.03 and 0.08 and Bic Intensity.
very good
Complimenti iiiii!!!
Hermoso el arte me gusta el dibujo una admiración para ti tu destreza la expresión de cada trazo de las líneas que van dibujando la forma del retrato saludos desde ecuador y seguiré mirando tus videos
Your hatching one of the top ! I saw yiur work on ig
If i should ever use a pen or a brush in my life again, i will use it as a sword, or i will not use it at all. Use your art to fight. Let it come out of your own blood, the testament to every breath of yours. Madness! Create something daring. There is a huge amount of bravery in simplicity.
wunderschön!!!!! 😃 Man brauch aber viel Zeit, bis das schafft, so schön zu zeichnen.
Excellent. Have you tyried using an oil based ballpoint pen, I like it at .28 mm the lines are fine and sharp
Bonjour et merci beaucoup pour votre cours fort intéressant et bien expliqué. ❤ From France 🇫🇷 Menton
Da’s mooi geworden!
Do you prefer smooth paper and do you like normal biros? I am not leaving enough spaces between my lines and it looks messy, learning a lot
Thank you for your skillfull relaxed explanation....you re very inspiring and motivating for me to try it. 🙏🏽👍🦋💚
Thank you very much for share this ! Very useful for me , im sorry that i didnt see this lesson 20 years ago but is okay , is not late at all ...ty

Excellent ! thank you a lot ! I have just one question : what are the sounds around you ? Sounds like crickets :D
The gel pen creates some interesting effects. As far as straight hatch lines "flattening" out the face, both Bill Sienkiewicz and Sergio Toppi use nothing but straight hatching, changing angles as necessary, and still manage to create the illusion of a curved surface through building up value.
When exactly do you decide to draw a line (nose, eyes etc)? Your art is wonderful, thank you for sharing.

How do you decide the orientation of the line? How do you hatch large areas, with long lines?

Ich werde etwas neues und wichtiges lernen. 😊 Viele danke. Frohen Weihnachten 🎄🎁😊
Drooling pen? You have my attention now lol ..nice video.
Been using inexpensive gelly ink or pilot like the one you are using. I try to barely Nick the paper with every line I do because as soon as the pen touches the paper it absorbs the ink making less controllable.i always start every drawing with a small cross hatch sphere.
Saludos cordiales de Manaus Amazonas Brasil muy interesante ! Nuevo subscriptor!😎
Thanks you very much. Unbelievable
Çok güzel resim Teşekkür

I use photocopy paper for my artwork all the time too 😅 I also have that exact same pen!
so nice ❤😍 new subscriber
Olá... Quero muito aprender corretamente essa técnica que amo também!
I think I just don't get to understand where and which kind of line to use
I’ve spent so many years drawing almost exclusively with a ballpoint pen on copy paper it is now my medium of choice 😂
This is beautiful. Have you heard of Matthew Weldon? He's a comic book artist that works exclusively with gel pens. Gel pens are really underrated
i love the feeling of using cheap stuff because it takes away any fear of making it perfect, but then i realize afterwards that non of it will be archival LOL. the solution therefore is to practice not caring, even if it is special paper or media
👍
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great tutorial, Thank you! Did you really draw this without pencil sketch underneath 😳? Like me you hold your pen quite flat against the paper. While this is good for fountain pens, dip pens or pencil, it doesn’t work well with gel pens or ballpoint pens. Holding the pen too flat (
coucou~! tu dessines très bien !
