I'm still just flabbergasted every time I watch this and her scratch board video. I had to follow her on Instagram. For as busy as her work looks, there is a sense of serenity of it due to the excercise of the mediums. It's simply phenomenal. I could look at them all day long and get lost in them. This video inspired me and I'm going to give this process a shot. I'll have to share what comes of it in discord.

Same! And I started to realize that sometimes it's the class assignments that are making me feel frustrated, stifled and artistically drained. I don't know how it is for others, but in a class setting, depending on the instructor, it's very easy for me to become exhausted with art when I'm being pushed (and graded) to use mediums that I do not like, and draw things that I don't want to draw. I had an instructor who made the class draw contour lines of pinecones, and to draw without lifting the pencil. This went on for two months, every class meeting for 3 hours straight, including homework. It was frustrating, and exhausting and it sucked the love and excitement out of drawing.

I've been doing so much painting lately that I've felt lost going back to pencil and ink (which used to be my bread and butter)- this helped a lot and I'm excited to go try some of these technique's!! Also that matte medium layer is everything I've been looking for to help me transition from the pencil to the ink!

This is very inspiring and instructive! I have the streaky medium issue on some of my work and I never thought about using very fine sandpaper even tho it's such a simple solution. It makes me want to draw from found objects as well, we are told often to not draw from pictures but it's never put in such an inspiring manner. Also, the questions + flow of the interview were great, very good video! :D

I watched this last night as I have always love pen and ink but have never combined it with pencil. Also I tend to dive in with the pen with no thought of positioning or composition and produce something like elaborate doodles. My most recent is also lacking in any perspective (having looked at it with new eyes this morning) Anyway, I have just looked up Song’s art online and am blown away by her pencil and ink work. So I am writing to say thank you for including this in your Art Videos. I am inspired to continue with my own efforts in this area, and also to try a larger size. 😳😱😄 4ft by 3ft? Really????? Some of my A4 size took 16 hours. However, I also noticed the speed at which Song draws, and maybe if I try a pencil under drawing I will be speedier when I use my pens. Thanks again.

The part about an eraser being a distraction I found to be true. I think it's more affective to treat it as another pencil; a way to carve out new shapes, rather than to undo something. Pencil, carves out shapes of darks, whereas the eraser carves out shapes of light.

  • @mypandapaints5854

Cold wax over graphite, especially graphite that’s placed over a medium, has a tendency to pick up the particles and move it where you might not want it. That’s probably also the reason why she finishes it with a spray instead of another layer of matte medium. Her first application of matte medium couldn’t be replaced with cold wax neither because of 1) the wandering graphite issue and 2) the next ink layer would behave differently. The fine liner tips will get clogged as it picks up the wax and the ink marks won’t absorb into the wax. Instead it will sit on top and make it much easier to smear.
