Mini-horses are this man's service animal of choice

Larry Mark Guthrie owns and operates a mini horse ranch in Pine, Colorado, but these aren’t your typical pet mini horses (if there is such a thing). They go by Chunky Monkey, Fancy Dancer, Glitter Blue (or sometimes Glitter Bug) and Patty Cake.

Lisa is correct. I have a miniature horse service animal as well. Dogs and miniature horses are the only two animals protected under the federal law. Any other animal isn't protected and businesses can rightfully refuse their entry if they choose to do so whereas if they refuse a miniature horse or a dog they are subject to discrimination law violation.

Braeburn Hilliard Some states protect other animals. For example, cats can be service animals in some states but if they go to a state where cats are not protected as service animals they won't have public access there.

Kirsten Sanford Cats can be great at medical alert because they have a good sense of smell. They can also be trained interuptions and responses. You can use positive reinforcement to train them, just like a dog.

Majestic Wolf Girls yes, that's true and you are correct. It gets a little more tricky in court cases though because depending on the states General statutes they may or may not be required to follow federal law. In most cases where federal and state laws conflict, the less restrictive law is the one that will apply. The problem I see with someone having a non-recognized service animal is that if they travel to a state that doesn't recognize cats as service animals, they can rightfully be denied entry/services. Horses and dogs are the only races/species that have been proven to to be able to reliably work in relation to a disability.

TheGlitchedMask well the animal has to be able to be tasked trained (and dogs are more easily trained than most animals) large enough to provide assistance, and be able to walk without a leash in a tight heel. Now any animal can be an emotion support animal, which is an animal that doesn't have to be specifically trained to do tasks. But they aren't allowed in non pet friendly public places. They only are allowed to be in houses/apartments that don't allow pets. A lot of people get these two confused thinking emotional support animals are service animals.

As someone who has Hypotension from Addison's Disease (Not cortisol dependent), I have been considering getting a miniature service horse for balance and mobility assistance along with carrying my medical equipment for years. I am just now looking into getting one Why not a dog? 1). My large dog has too much energy to become a good service dog 2). I don't want another large dog 3). A miniature horse that is taken care of can live long into it's late 30's compared to the lifespan of a large dog. That also means that it can have 2-3x the working lifespan compared to a dog. The biggest challenge you are going to have getting a service horse is your anxiety. If you have anxiety it's not going to make things any better for you out in public with a mini horse. They attract a lot of attention. That's they main reason I've put off getting one for all these years, I've just now decided that the physical benefits far outweigh my anxiety.

Umm, yeah this man doesn't know what he's talking about when ranting. Miniature Horses have been service animals for a while now, they are the only animals that can be service animals other than dogs. There is no such thing as a service cat, service pig or a service anything, just miniature horses and dogs. You won't see too many miniature horses, because not too many people are aware of them, but there are a couple pros and cons. For one, Miniature Horses live longer. Two, Miniature Horses have better vision, but don't have the sense of smell dogs do. Three, Miniature horses can't normally live inside the house like a dog can, because they require alot of space to roam around when they're off duty, but if ur house is built with a lot of roaming space with very little walls and furniture, ur miniature horse may feel comfortable. Four miniature horses have very unpredictable behaviors around threats, so just be aware of this.

Also, an animal will not just work with anyone. My trained SD can do many things for me, he watches my temperature, my migraines, my asthma, seizures, along with dizzy spells and blood sugar.... But he wouldn't be able to do that with a stranger. It would take time for the 2 to bond. Maybe even more time than just training ur own SA. The animal and person have to connect. Along with how an animal is trained, some can only train an animal for themselves. Others do it in a way the dog can be given to a human and begin bonding. It depends on the person and the animal. But, I help others train their SD and their pets... I'm disabled. The animals work on my schedule and forgive me for when I over sleep because my body had to recover from a seizure. It's hard to explain... But that's why dogs are amazing. It also helps to know how to throw ur weight around in case u have to pin a dog ur helping with XD

If it were its own entity, it would not have all the rights its handler has. Further, it's a dog/horse, so it is perfectly content to be considered one with its handler. That's how dogs and horses role.

Parts of Canada allows service cats and some places in the US also allow service cats. By ada law states and county’s can have a broader definition of service animals, if you go to your state laws you can read on what animals can legally be service animals in your county

Because when they allowed any animal to be a service animal ppl took advantage with their ungroomed, untrained pets. They found nearly all the cat service animals were not properly task trained/ didn't follow the rules of being in public that were set out. Many other animals were found to have the same issues. Hence the restrictions. Google and the federal websites share so much info for us ya know..

As a disabled person with a condition similar to the one the man in the video has, I can assure you that no matter where we shop, we just want to be left alone. In fact, in many states it's a felony to interfere with or distract a service animal.

@@savethebeachmouse7112 then why do they bring small horse to Walmart everyday, here in wasilla Alaska we have a huge lady who walks her small horse around Walmart everyday sometimes even 3 times a day the horse looks miserable and sad it has no outside space the lady keeps it trapped in her small SSI apartment the only time the horse gets to see outside is the walk from the car to Walmarts door. Two days ago I saw she's started bringing it into the pot store. It's not healthy for the horse or the public yes I'm sure there are a few people being responsible with their small horse then there's a larger population using it for attention paid for by our tax dollars she has never worked never paid in and has collected ssdi and ssi, welfare since 16 years old, we are paying for her and the mistreatment of the animal and her 350pound weight she got there cause foodstamps have given her more then enough all her live and she has never had to work.

@@alyshiamorehouse5512 Stores can ask only 2 questions under the law. Is this a service animal/your service animal? What tasks has it been trained to assist you with? It's illegal to ask what the disability is or to ask the animal to perform. One Costco store saw a woman's husband taking the dog inside without her after she claimed it was hers and helped with "spells." Costco won after kicking her out and being sued. A service animal will not act up and must be fully under their handler's control at all times. It's possible the woman you mentioned is trying to get some much needed exercise. If the horse isn't getting adequate exercise or treatment, call animal control and they'll investigate. No one gets disability unless they have worked enough to pay into the system. Social Security reviews everyone on a regular schedule. The average amount is about $1,000 or less. There are roughly 10 million people on disability in a growing U.S. population of nearly 350 million.

@@savethebeachmouse7112 I think we are talking about 2 different things the woman I'm explaining has a emotional support small horse for her anxiety not a service animal and isn't walking she calls up gets a electric cart to her car gets in and rides the electric cart around Walmart with her small horse/ companion. No physical disability other then gaining weight every month. Also many many young people are getting SSI and ssdi claiming mental disability from anxiety never working or paying in. There's a difference between a service animal and a emotional support animal, and it's the emotional support animal being abused and disguised as service animal.

Miniature horses seem like a good option for mobility. They are protected under the ADA along with service dogs and are very intelligent! It's awesome to see people using service horses since they're so uncommon in the service world
