Mini Countryman Electric 2024 review: New E and SE small SUVs put Volvo XC40 Recharge EV on notice

The 2024 Mini Countryman has a trick up its proverbial sleeve - and a big one at that. Yep, in a sign of the times the third-generation small SUV is available with not one, but two all-electric powertrain options, with the single motor dubbed E, while the dual motor goes by SE.
While petrol-powered Countryman variants remain available, the focus is very much on the E and SE, which go tyre to tyre with the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, with the former producing 150kW of power and 250Nm of torque alongside a WLTP-rated range of 462km, while the latter musters 230kW/494Nm and 432km.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Managing Editor Tim Nicholson travels to Portugal to get behind the wheel of the new Countryman E and SE to find out what they have in store for Australia ahead of their local launch. Needless to say, expectations are high as they enter an increasingly competitive segment.

Thank you for the size comparison to the XC40, I've been searching the internet for that reference. I have a XC40 at the moment and want to change to the countryman later this year. Great review, thanks!

As a MINI owner who has a Cooper S, I was prepared to order the Countryman SE BUT the Rivian R2 appears to be a much more compelling product and not hampered by having to be a petrol , PHEV, and /or BEV which allowed Rivian to do quite a bit with the packaging (interior/exterior). A rear biased architecture will generally handle much better on the road in dry weather. Plus, I am fed up with these addendum stickers you find on the legacy dealership and I find it offensive. Sorry MINI. Some interesting facts. The R2 is approx. 10" longer than the Countryman but the wheelbase is 34" longer. Height and width are approx 2" more on the R2 and you get a frunk on the R2. along with projected AER of 300 miles. RJ could comfortably sit in the passenger seat and them sit on the 2nd row with no problem. It will be the 1st Rivian to be designed to use the Tesla SuperCharger network. It will be worth the wait.

Being electric, I assume Minis will no longer considered as 'English reliability with German repair costs'.

Based on my experience with the F56 SE, I'd say that. 3 1/2 years, 75000 km, only one issue: charger flap sensor complaining that it was open, when it wasn't. Promptly fixed.

Electric cars are naturally reliable since they have no transmission.

Something I don't get is everyone's hate towards Tesla and their "dashless" setup, in particular showing the speed on the centre screen. This is something that literally takes minutes of driving to get used to. Plus the original Mini had it's big round speedo in the middle anyway which is why this Countryman mimics the same with the round screen.

@@harowerks44 I doubt it to be honest. There are other manufacturers doing the same now. However I think a HUD would be a good decision.

Who gaf about the car moods? Seriously. I get you need to mention it but oof. The Center storage looks poorly thought out, but can’t tell from outside the car.

I keep expecting a coffin to be taken out of the back. Seriously though, the new Countryman really isn't an attractive car. MINIs have always been fairly easy on the eyes, as well as great fun to drive. Well one out of two isn't bad is it?
