Shankar Nagarkatte was born on 9 November 1954 in Mallapur, Honnavar. His parents were Anandi and Sadanand Nagarkatte. Born into a Konkani-speaking family, He had an elder sister, Shyamala, and an elder brother, actor Ananth Nag. After completing formal education, Shankar moved to Mumbai. In Mumbai, he was attracted to Marathi theatre and immersed himself in theatrical activities. Shankar Nag then shifted base to Karnataka. His elder brother Ananth Nag had already established himself as an actor and urged Shankar to act in films. He was offered a role of a mercenary by Girish Karnad in the epic movie, Ondanondu Kaladalli 1979. Minchina Ota (a rare example of a heist movie in Kannada), Janma Janmada Anubandha and Geetha (both of which had music by South Indian maestro Ilayaraja Commercial film producers took notice of Shankar Nag and he began acting in typical masala movies. Seetaramu was Shankar Nag's first commercial movie. Although he had never undergone any martial arts training, he earned the sobriquet of Karate King. His popular films include Auto Raja, Geeta, S.P. Sangliana, and Minchina Ota. Shankar began his directorial with Minchina Ota. This won him seven state awards, including the best film. And then came a series of films directed by him. Janma Janmada Anubandha, Geetha, Accident (which won many state and national awards),Ondu Muttina Kathe (with Rajkumar in the lead - loosely based on John Steinbeck's novel The Pearl), Nodi Swamy Navirodu Hige, Lalach and Hosa Theerpu (remake of Dushman - his only directorial remake).His film accident & T.V.Serial Malgudi Days has treated as a landmark and revolutionary in the Indian Cinema. His films Autoraja, Moogana Sedu, Muniyana Madari, Karmika Kallanalla, Nodi Swamy Navirodu Hige, Indina Bharatha,Accident, Parameshi Prema Prasanga, Lorry Driver, etc. were a reflection of his affection towards the working class of the society. Shankar Nag died in a car crash at Anagodu village on the outskirts of Davanagere town on 30 September 1990
Nigooda Rahasya, one of his last films also had his brother and the one of the most successful and respected actors Anant Nag complete the voice dubbing for Shankar.

He is the pride of our Karnataka. He is the Amitabh Bachchan of our Kannada film industry. Long live Anant Nag.

Ananthnag sir has done all genres of movies there is including sci fi (Hollywood and the upcoming 'mysore masala') , horror and magical realism (kondura). He's done gangster movies too like kaddipudi but I really like to see him play a gangster. May be in upcoming movies as an aged gangster like Godfather or sarkar. Watch 'kanneshwara raama' , 'kalyug'(1981 I guess), 'bara' etc , he's brilliant in those too.

Such a disaster to lose Shankar Nag sir . He would have been the contemporary to Chiranjeevi and Rajnikanth. Today the Karnataka film industry would have been so different if the legend was amongst us.
Truly awesome movie! Way ahead of its time! Even though, Shankar Nag, Anant Nag & friends shot the movie with shoestring budget, it turned out to be a neat crime caper that stood the test of time. Oh by the way, Priya Tendulkar was gorgeous! She was Yummy! :) RIP Priya.

A prison break movie which was way ahead of it's time. The movie contains all kinds of emotions. Kannada Industry had one big presence of versatility. That is none other than our Shankranna. If Shankranna was alive, we could have expected our sandalwood to be on top of Hollywood movies. If i had a time machine, I'd first save Shankranna 🙏

Don't get too excited. Minchina Ota was definitely a good movie. But, don't compare it to Hollywood movies. There were plenty of Hollywood Noir movies on this genre that came in 1940's and 1950's. Even the ending scene in Minchina Ota was copied from - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid.
