Odin in this game is a toxic cloud, a shadow that looms over and poisons everyone unfortunate enough to be in his grasp. I imagine that Mimir, as someone who was able to escape that toxicity, would be encouraging to anyone who seems to be trying to do the same for themselves, just like how former alcoholics might support somebody who's on their own path to sobriety.

And he was, in a way, until you saw how utterly broken inside he truly is. Odin destroyed both his self confidence and his thinking. Thor is overall a depressed man, who doesn't want to be this "destroyer". He mocks Kratos for how Kratos was being this "lesser version" and wanted the "true" god of war. Yet maybe the truth is that he hates that Kratos symbolizes what Thor could be. This "destroyer" that actually learned to "be better" that Thor felt was denied of him. That's why at their final clash, when Kratos had the upper hand and could have killed Thor, Kratos sparing Thor and telling him that they can "be better" made Thor finally realize and act on what he truly wanted, and that was to no longer be Odin's "destroyer" and be true to himself. Sadly, his first act of defiance against Odin would be his last.

Yeah he's pretty much a mirror of Kratos in his younger days. A violent, vengeful pawn of a cruel narcissistic god. Raised to be a brutal killing machine, destroying everything he touches. While Kratos seemed to have lust as his vice, Thor drowns it all out with booze. He's a great foil, showing how far Kratos has come from. That's why he's so tragic, he never truly gets the chance Kratos had to prove he could be better. That first step was his last.

The first fight against Thor has a completely different meaning when you put back all the things you learn about him during the game. At first you think that he wants a good challenge, but after learning all you do, you realize that Thor trying to bring out the "monster" in Kratos is him trying to justify his own shittiness. I think he tried to reason that Kratos "Spartan Rage" was a parallel to his own "Drunken Rage" and that by forcing Kratos to embrace his rage once more it would justify himself not being able to overcome his own alcoholism. "We do not change". Another thing that struck me is Thor repeating "You're thinking too much" constantly to Atreus. To me it was incredibly sad because in his own twisted way he was trying to help Atreus. I imagine Thor being a curious child only to be berated and molded to be Odin's muscles on account of him being half-giant. Imagine trying to grow up alongside Odin, the self-proclaimed smartest guy in the 9 realms, and how he must have constantly been humiliated to end up to the conclusion that "thinking" will only bring you pain.

Sadly, I don't have to imagine it, I've lived it. My father is just like Odin. Manipulative, pretends he's godly levels of smart, narcissist... the works. Every time you tried, he always knew more than you. "Been there, done that" is what he always says. If you try to disprove or show otherwise, you are met with threats of "getting your ass beat, boy." Which happened, several times because I wouldn't back down. Not to mention if he was around his "friends"... constantly he would mock and belittle me in front of them. Make sure to tell his friends how much smarter he was than me. Every past mistake I made recited to them just to make me look bad. Making sure to tell them just how he made me do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted, as "he was the one in control." If you want my father in a nutshell... look at Odin in this game.

I think that’s a pretty good summary. Thor even says “You think you can come here, become a daddy, get a clean slate? That ain’t how it works.” He was most definitely projecting there. I think there’s more to that fight, and why he was pushing Kratos. The simplest answer is he likes to fight and wanted a challenge. Kratos even mentions in the journal that he noticed a difference between Baldur and Thor; Baldur wants to hurt people, while Thor just likes the sport that comes with fighting. I think he also wanted to see God of War in Kratos to get closure with his sons’ deaths. If Kratos isn’t as strong as the legends say he is, he’ll feel like he failed as a father, and that their deaths are on him for not training them better. If he is, then he’ll know his sons got a good death at least.

When hearing about Thor in the first game I imagined him as a reflection of Kratos in the original trilogy, a bloodthirsty monster who wanted nothing but ceaseless carnage. And to be honest I was right, just not in the way I thought. Thor isn't purely a monster, yet he's still a reflection of the old Kratos. Yeah, Kratos and Atreus were the ones to do them in, but they’re really shirking responsibility for how they themselves were to blame for Magni and Modi’s deaths (plus, Odin for ordering them to find the last Jotun on Midgar, Magni and Modi themselves for being the aggressors in the conflict and a little extra blame for Thor for showing favouritism to Magni over Modi which resulted in Modi being more sadistic over hurting those weaker than him due to his jealousy and insecurity toward Magni).

One thing I like is how often the characters remind you that this really is all Odin's fault. Sure Sif and Thor have blame aplenty, but it was Odin who raised Thor like that. We constantly see Odin belittle and manipulate his own son, to the point that Thor seems almost meek around him. If you pay attention throughout the game the finale between Odin and Thor will come as no surprise - Odin is a sociopathic monster who doesn't care about anyone around him, he just acts friendly and nice when its in his interest to do so. It's a classic question, how much do we blame the children of abusive parents for continuing the cycle of abuse. But there's no doubt that had Odin raised his children even marginally better, none of this would have happened.

@MiC , it's only political if you make it political. Toxic masculinity isn't just about physical abuse, it's also about emotional abuse, mental abuse and negligence towards male children who can't cope in a healthy way once they reach adulthood. What you're referring to right now is general intergenerational trauma, which is a light way to describe toxic masculinity. Even Mimir explained that, but didn't dare to pinpoint anything specifically because close minded people who are like "omg, that's so political and woke" would be like "cancel culture strikes again" and SMS don't want that. After all, red pilled people generate a ton of money and criticizing toxic masculinity would be an absolute financial suicide since they've literally formed a super masculine franchise (like seriously, as far as I know, gow has had sex, violence and daddy/family issues, which is something red pilled people really love). I mean, heck, Thor and Sif still show signs of toxic masculinity. They both didn't care if Magni and Modi were their kids until a girl was born in their family and then they were like "omg, let's be better parents 'cause she a gurl and she need be stronk", which is what a ton of people do irl. They teach girls how to be both physically and emotionally strong while neglecting boys' emotional needs, which is cynical and ironical. (btw, sorry for the essay and adding so much shit that you probably won't care about. However, as you'll be able to tell, there's literally people sexualizing Sif and there's one guy who called this dialogue "cancer". Why? Because they possibly felt personally attacked. After all, unconsciously no one likes to be called out for the mindset they have.)

A tragic asshole, but an asshole nevertheless. And c'mon, the way Thor raised his sons, the way Odin raised Thor, that is shit-tier fatherhood at it's peak. "Get drunk. Punch things you don't like. Belittle those less powerful than you. Hate everyone different." It's a Fucking shite way to live. Kratos as he is now represents a more honourable form of manhood: Strength and ferocity tempered by wisdom and compassion.
