Milwaukee m12 vs m18. Should I buy the m12 as an electrician?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I get asked a lot whether it's worth buying the m12 Milwaukee drill and impact driver.
This is a quick demo of what they are capable of and what they aren't.
For an electrician and data/av technician I believe it's a great buy. Even if it's just the impact driver. It's become my daily drill for the past few years.

Also, thank you for doing the lb conversion for the crazy US system, our system really doesn't male sense, but it's what we are all taught to use and think about here in the states. I'm a commercial security installer so I first got the M18 line since we do a lot of heavy duty work. A few years ago I got the M12 surge impactor with the 4.0 battery and it's my favorite tool now. Light weight with a ton of power its my daily driver but quite often I need my M18 drills to get the task done ✔️

I have seen four motor types on Milwaukee tools. Two and four brush motors and small-frame and large-frame brushless. Large-frame brushless tools are usually marked "Fuel". The capacity of the batteries is measured in watt-hours so an M12 battery only has 60 percent of the capacity of an M18 battery with the same amp-hour rating. An M12 Fuel tool may deliver more power than an M18 non-Fuel tool but usually has a shorter runtime.

The M12 FUEL Gen2 (2504 drill/2553 impact driver) are noticeably faster and more powerful than the first Gen models in this video. Only “complaint” I have about them is the 2504 drill changed from a mechanical clutch to an electronic clutch, and while that’s largely a matter of personal preference, there are some measurable advantages to a mechanical clutch, including much lower torque at the low end settings, making them much more suited to installing fasteners in low torque (under 7nm/60in lb) settings such as screws going into plastic, etc.

The only M12 I own is the M12 Fuel impact driver (gen 2), even though the M18 Fuels will always be the heavy duty work horse of my Milwaukee tools, the 12v impact driver is definitely the one I carry on me when I climb up a ladder to run a screw into something quickly. It is just so nice how light weight it is and it still does everything I need it to, honestly one of the best purchases I have ever made in recent times just because it is so versatile and allows for quick driving of smaller wood screws.

Served me outstandingly well rebuilding cars and building simple wood tables etc. Recently considered the M12 just for some lighter-weight tools. Seems like the M18 is pretty significantly more-powerful. If I were a professional using them all day, every day the M12 seems like a great addition to the tool-box, but for now I'll stick with the M18. Salesman at store sold me instantly on the M12, yet when I got home with it and checking it out it I realized I needed a bit set. Then went back on the online sight to get an idea, and realized the M18 was same price yet also for $28 more I could even get a complete M18 with battery, charger, bag and bit set.. so now after reviewing your video, in which was very helpful I will be returning and exchange and definitely go with the M18 bc I’d rather have more efficient tool vs M12 somewhat mediocre for same price as the M18. Yet, I definitely will notice a weight change but I’m okay with that to have a more powerful tool, that won’t disappoint me. So it’s the M18 for me 😃

I know it's been a year, but welcome to the Milwaukee family! As many have pointed out in the comments, although he states that newer models are available, what's missing is how much more powerful those newer M12 Fuel drills and drivers are. It could be that you bought and returned the current M12 Fuel. I own both 12v and 18v Fuel current generation tools. The M12 is far from mediocre. My experience reflects that of many who own both - there's not much the M12 can't do. It's the tool I use 90% of the time.

IF you are a Electrician I recommend 12V tools or any 18V or 20V tools drivers or drills that don't have that much power but you're looking for a gentle and controllability. You can look on Makita 12V, or DeWalt dcf801 Xtreme 12V or Bosch 12V or something that is very affordable like Hercules brand harbor freight 12V impact driver there's a lot of options out there moe! Don't just look on Milwaukee. Milwaukee is not the only Apple in the Tree. You gotta look the entire Tree or the entire Farm.

Personally between domestic, commercial and industrial jobs my 18v only come out when I'm heading up a ladder boring a hole through a pole or ripping a roof off. 95% gets done with 12v and most of the time just make do with it, at the end of the day the best impact driver will be the one on your hip.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with these tools. For some unknown reason Milwaukee uses the nominal voltage to rate the M18 batteries but the peak voltage for the M12. The truth is the M12 is more like a M10.8. Even worse they use the inflated voltage to calculate the Watt-hour capacity of the pack which is just wrong. The real Wh capacity of the M12 pack is only 90 percent of what is marked on the label. They calculate the Wh capacity of the M18 pack correctly. Good luck with your videos.

@@AddictedtoTools There are many sources of information about lithium cells including the Wikipedia. If you have a multimeter you can measure the voltages yourself. Fresh off the charger the M18 pack will measure just over 20V and the M12 just over 12V. That is normal. The charge controllers for common lithium cells charge at constant current to start but will shut off completely when they reach a voltage of about 4.2 Volts per cell. The tool will then draw power from the cells from 4.2 volts down to about 3 volts. The average voltage over the discharge cycle is about 3.6 volts per cell. It is the average voltage value that should be used to calculate the total energy contained in the cell. Milwaukee appears to use 3.6 volts per cell to calculate Wh for the M18 but 4.0 volts per cell for the M12. That is an odd thing to do. An important thing to note is that the internal resistance of the 10.8 volt M12 pack is much lower than the old Ni-Cad or NiMh packs. These newer lithium-based M12 tools can deliver as much power as the old 18 volt tools could with their nickel-based batteries.

Fellow sparky(commercial) here, Thanks for the videos it nice to see someone that actually uses there tools to give us an honest opinion. I've been using the gen 2 drill and impact with 6.0 battery's for the last 3+ years. I also have the older gen1 brushless drill which came free with some second hand 6.0 battery's I bought. Whilst I full understand that you are not going to replace your older m12 kit till it dies, you are also not painting a very accurate picture of the m12 platform in its current state. With regards to the drill for sure its never going to be in the same league as an m18 drill, that being said I've not found any task in the last 3 years on site it cant do yet. From 52mm holes in trunking/panels, 32mm step drill in panels and metal back boxes, and 10-12mm holes in unistrut all no problem. can you stall in out absolutely you can but that just means a lot less chance of breaking my wrist when something grabs unexpectedly. Now as for the gen 2 impact that a different animal entirely its basically the perfect impact for electricians super controllable power, super light weight, From doing delicate stuff like self drilling screws in tin to level3 beast mode for smashing in tapcon anchors, or doing up m10/m12 nuts and bolts. This little beauty does it all no problem at all. ps if you want to see a more up to date comparison check out HayesMachinery on youtube. for sure they aren't very experienced with using power tools but that kind of makes it even more fun to watch.

Also not sure if you've covered it, but soldering irons. Are you a butane fan or milwaukee m12 fan? Positives to both I've heard (don't have either myself)

The m12 fuel line is a shoulder saver. If it not heavy material I’m using the m12 tools. For home use they will do 99 percent of it

You mentioned that newer models exist, however I don't think that statement accurately portrays how much better the M12 Fuel tools are in comparison to the old brushed models you are using. The newer M12 Fuel drivers would accomplish those tasks very easily.

You should let people know that your tools are older generations of the m18 lineup. They have all been updated to be smaller and more powerful nowadays. The m18 line is the best imo. They’re more powerful and the theres more tools on the platform. Recently i considered the m12 because i wanted the 23g pin nailer which is only m12 and since im a cabinet guy it would be handy to have smaller tools. Im too invested into m18 so im just gonna stick to what i have.

Thanks for the feedback mate. 2:20mins I state that there are better newer versions and that mine are dated. When it comes to changing platforms, you’ve definitely got to consider the outlay for batteries and so forth. If the 18 is sufficient, then I would also stay with that. Cheers👍

The newer m12’s are definitely more powerful, and smaller. I always find it strange when I use the impact. It has a slow start up for some reason. Not real issue. Just something I’ve felt when using the apprentices drill.

Drill- Packedge in typical box, came with a tool bag (added bonus), two batteries, one charger, drill, and driver. Two words "plenty of Torque" kzread.infoUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv well I guess that's three. Nice upgrade from current setup. Has belt clips, I don't think I will be using those. Driver and drill were bigger than what I expected but it is an upgrade from the current setup. For the money I would say that this is a great setup for Professionals and DIY/Weekend warriors.

@@glenarseneau1231 why would you drill holes with an impact? Just have your 18v hammer drill for holes. I use the 12v impact for anything besides holes. The hammer drill does a better job with holes anyways.
