Milling Timbers is Simple on My Woodmizer LT15 Sawmill

Ойын-сауық

Milling some super duper good Douglas-fir timbers on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. I will show you how I measure and set the height of the saw to get heart centered timbers and maximize the amount of lumber I also get out of the log. Plus we get to have a lot of fun with the tractor, chainsaw, dump trailer, and possibly the most tongue-tied blooper in the history of the universe.

    I like the in-video comments, they're hilarious. I recently discovered your channel and am really enjoying them, the great editing, the off the cuff humor and in general the educational aspect of the videos too. Keep up the good work, a fan of your content.

    Hey Mr Wilson.. I just had my total knee replacement surgery on my left knee as my right knee was done 3yrs ago. As soon as this knee gets all healed up I'm firing up my stihl 500i and woodland mills 126 14hp mill and getting with it! I've offered before some free labor for a couple of weeks. You pass on some one to one knowledge and I'll work the best I can. Big Chevy truck, 3 chainsaws and a brand new knee lol.. I just like your videos can't get enough.. thanks a bunch..

    I have had a few people offer free help. I have always been hesitant with that because of liability. If anything it would be a fun time to hang out with viewers doing things in the woods. I will have to look more into the possibility of doing that. Right now I’m not into much production in the woods anyway. But I may have some big projects coming up in the fall after the heat of summer and wildfire danger subsides.

    @WilsonForestLands thanks for the reply wow that was fast.. I'm a framing carpenter /builder nearly all my life with a lot of houses, apartments, condos under my belt. I got interested in sawmills and chainsaws and I got hooked. If you opened a sawmill chainsaw school with all your knowledge I would gladly attend. Thanks again. PS how about a video on how you do those great Humboldt notches! 👍

    Wow! Perseverance and persistence pay particular, um, dividends... Glad you included the bloops -- I feel that way most days. The cameraman was quite snarky in the comments during the log-loading sequence; he needs a sharp rebuke! Another likeroo; cheers and chuckles from your neighbour to the North in Linn County.

    Good video Michael! Dry logs can be tough on blades. I think it was your state-mate the Oregon Old Timer who found somewhere that Wood-Mizer recommends no blade lube on really dry logs as it causes the wood to expand.

  • @WilsonForestLands

    @WilsonForestLands

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks Paul, that’s interesting, I have not heard that. Most of the time I don’t use lube at all. I am more likely to use it on dry wood because I get more pitch buildup on the blade with dry than I do with green wood. In this video I only used it a few times when I was getting buildup. A few people have asked me what I do about lube. I was thinking about doing a video soon about that.

    Care to weigh in on heart centered beams vs free of heart? From a user perspective, I see heart centered beams dry straighter but check more. What do you get the better price for?

  • @WilsonForestLands

    @WilsonForestLands

    Жыл бұрын

    The dying trees I have been working with have mostly been so small, heart center is all I get out of them. Most of the time I sell my wood before it has a chance to dry, so don’t have a lot of experience with what happens after they get off the mill. I see other people charge more for free of heart. I just haven’t produced enough of them to price them differently. I have only had my mill for three years and just recently started milling more timbers since the price of lumber has fallen.

  • @WilsonForestLands

    @WilsonForestLands

    I might need one of those videos too, I don’t know what the foot is. Maybe you mean the toeboard? If so, the toeboard lifts the small end of the log to help match it to the larger end of the log. If that’s not what you meant, something may have went over my head.
