Cody, I have watched and recommended your videos to several people. sometimes they complain that they are a little boring like when you were cutting the wooden dowels. What these people don't understand is that watching someone work in the job site and make mistakes and find work around and solutions is completely invaluable to us Youngblood homemakers. This training is the most that some of us will ever get. Thanks so much for all your effort and please don't edit out the small mundane details, they make a world of difference to some of us.

I've been studying Joel Salatin for 15 years and that anecdote is magnificent. He shares advice for someone new to the country side: if you're visiting a neighbor and he starts chatting, but you're in a hurry, best get over yourself and turn over a 5 gal pail and listen a while.

I have really enjoyed your series on modern homesteading. I especially enjoyed your recent video on how you are getting organized and you found it to be a Biblical principle. You have inspired me to become more organized and follow more Biblical principles. I can only imagine Jesus being inspired by Joseph's carpentry and learning humility from him as anyone who tries to to build or repair something must learn pretty quickly. Thanks again and I look forward to more great episodes. Sincerely, Les Edwards Columbia SC

Saw mill joy, I so want to see that mill slicing the log into boards, what a rig!!! I remember working in a mill in northern Maine for a summer where I was a low saw man, (one guy on top of the log and one below) to pull the saw through the log to rough cut planking. I would have sold the neighbor's kid to have had a mill like this!!! What beautiful day to work outside...at last!

I have seen a Lucas Mill demo at a logging show in Bancroft, Ontario about 7 years ago. Nice rig with some cool features but limited functionality in some ways. Definitely better suited for some than others. I contemplated going with the Lucas but ended up with a typical bandsaw mill. Milling your own lumber is some of the most satisfying work one can do. I love the Wranglerstar videos and get a lot of good advice/information from them. My next projects are timber framed buildings for my cider press and maple sugar shack.

I've seen people marking the heart crack (with a sharpie) on either end of the log and then turning the log before milling so that the heart crack is as close to level with the saw cuts as possible. Apparently, this helps reduce twisting as it dries, as the heart crack is an indicator of the weak spot of the tree, and shows the way the cells in the wood are already shrinking.

That's interesting. The bark protects the tree while it's alive, but it's makes it rot more quickly when it's dead. It looks like those aluminum chocks have already had a run-in with a saw blade. When in doubt, blame the metric system. That works for me. Now that you have a Yanmar, the proverb still holds: Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. That's one of the major things that hooked me on your channel.

Hi, the logs with mushrooms or fungus on them are perfectly fine to cut timber from them, but I would not recommend to use the excess as firewood in the log cabin, specially if you stack those on the porch. And if anything starts to pop up on the cut timber use a heatgun or gently a blowtorch to eliminate the mushrooms from growing, one other thing to use is acid to stop the growth. If you do not have reasonable acid in hand the the cemicals that you have to clean the toilet will work for dealing with fungus, just put some cloves on. All the best.

I remember in 2008 up here in MA we had a disastrous ice storm, brought down full size trees like twigs. One of the trees that came down on our property was a 4 story tall black walnut tree that had grown among the pines, so it was as straight as a ship'mast with almost no knots and lower limbs, and it came up by the roots. and didnt crack when i landed. I spents two weeks trying to convince my father to sell it to a lumber mill, but he thought it "wasnt worth the hassle" and just gave it to our neighbor for firewood. Still breaks my heart.
