I grew up drinking hot chocolate with water, but I'm pretty sure our brand has powdered milk in it. When you mixed it with water, it looked completely different than the hot chocolate I drank.

Hot cocoa* Hot Chocolate involves melting actual chocolate into milk or other liquid dairy. Hot Cocoa is made with cocoa powder.
I’ve had hot chocolate in both water and milk. In my honest opinion, milk is better with hot chocolate. It’s not just that it’s creamier but the taste as well. Swiss Miss is pretty good. If you’re going to buy some, I recommend the packets that contain marshmallows. That’s my favorite from Swiss Miss.

We use both, like at the same time. We boil the water in a kettle then fill the cup about two-thirds with the water and add one-third refrigerator temperature milk, which cools it down enough to drink. Also yes Swiss Miss has powdered milk in it, but it’s still not as good without adding milk. I remember the other vlog, I commented basically the same thing.

That's how I do it as well. In my house, it's easier to boil water rather then milk, so I don't use pure milk too often. I like doing 1/3 cold milk because it imitates some of the smoothness that pure milk has in hot chocolate and it cools it down enough where you can immediately start drinking it.

Same for me. In fact this is what I thought Stephen was talking about when he said "hot chocolate with milk". The thought of doing the whole thing had just never occurred to me as a thing that you could do. Guess I'll have to try it some time.

hot milk + sugar + a drop of vanilla extract. is really good.
It probably really does depend on what brand you're trying. One of the most popular brands here in Sweden, O'boy (yep) is - in my opinion - one that goes great with both water and milk, though I'm one of the 5% who prefer water in mine. 😂
So, I've researched the brand of hot chocolate you used, and it looks like it does NOT contain any powdered milk (it looks to be mostly sugar and cocoa powder), while Swiss Miss typically does. But whenever I've made Swiss Miss with just pure water, it's still a little too much on the "chocolate water" side for me because it's kind of thin, so if I do make it with mostly water, I add a splash of whole milk or heavy cream to make it a bit richer.

As a Vermonter and therefore have easy access to their "hot chocolate," I can confirm that it is actually a derivative of "drinking chocolate" (see note below if you want more info about this) which means it has no powdered milk/cream. Note: "Drinking Chocolate" is term created and/or popularized by Lake Champlain Chocolates to refer to a product which is ground/shaved chocolate meant to be melted into hot milk, instead of a mixture of cocoa power, sugar, and a dairy powder which is meant to be dissolved into a hot liquid. As some companies have tried to join them, they have made mixtures meant to be dissolved in hot milk specifically (and hot water in a pinch) which they also call drinking chocolate. As an aside, if you get a chance to try Lake Champlain Chocolate's drinking chocolate at one of their stores in Vermont, do so, its amazing. If you like coffee, get their Mocha, as its their smooth 64% cocoa content drinking chocolate with a shot of espresso, and is one of the best things I've ever drank.

Try barista/full fat oat milk, it's really close to real milk in taste and texture. Either Oatly Full Fat, Oatly Barista, or Chobani Extra Creamy.
I was surprised that Stephen never put that onto the test labs as soon as that question popped out. Feels like this would be a type of case of "Proof is better than Argument" :P Although I think part of the reason why Stephen followed the Water Path was because schools, colleges and workplaces usually would distribute the hot cocoa from a machine which would come water-brewed, while Hot Cocoa made with Milk needs to be manually prepared.
Oh, wow! I didn't know there was a design in the MalMakes store that pulls from all the different Donkey Kong Country paintings. I always loved those series of paintings and now I definitely wanna get a mug or a blanket or something with that design!
When my family drank hot chocolate growing up, we used Swiss Miss and put it in hot water and topped it off with milk before stirring. Anyone else do this?

Here! Though I used condensed milk instead of full😋
We always did what was on the packet, so if it said to use water we used water and if it said to use milk we used milk. There are definitely some that don't have milk in, and for them, you need milk, but those that do have milk in I'd say can be had with water.
Hey Stephen! Do you remember making this vlog? "Hot Chocolate: Milk VS Water • 1.10.19" It showed up in my recommendations! You might want to re-watch it again. I found it interesting how you didn't notice a difference in 2019

I think for a more in-depth analysis of hot chocolate, y’all could compare: Milk vs Water Cocoa mix with powdered milk Cocoa mix without powdered milk And maybe for fun: One or two brands of chocolate syrup (how much of a difference is there between the powder and syrup?)
I LOVE it when You finally realize that Mal is right !! More Sillycow will be on your way !!!
i've always done hot chocolate with water, but I guess I should try with milk??? Thanks for doing the test, if it's THAT blatant of a difference it might be very very worth it!

Google says swissmiss does have powdered non fat milk in it!
I'm pretty sure those Swiss Miss ones do have powered milk cause they know people do just throw them in water. From personal experience (summer camp gave those hot chocolate packets like drugs) there is still a difference but not a huge one so I always stick with water just cause I don't keep a lot of milk
I love how you already did this and completely forgot about it 😅 It sounds exactly like me
I've always been a milk person when it comes to hot chocolate. I think with water it's bland and just not good at all. Milk makes it so much better and even when it gets cold, then you now have chocolate milk.
I've always been curious to see a direct comparison myself. My family always used water growing up but I've wanted to use milk instead to see the difference.

I think my family made it with water, too, but I didn't have it much. I mainly had it in my high school German class where my teacher would bring in coffee and hot water+hot chocolate on block days. Then whenever I got it from a cafe it took me a while to realize they made it with milk. Which I like, arguably better, but I'm a little lactose intolerant so... I have to plan
@relsre

@@rapidwave8493 Sorry to hear about the lactose intolerance. Have you tried hot chocolate with almond/soy milk? I've at least done the latter (sweetened variants) and it tastes alright, better than water IMHO but also definitely different from using milk.

@@relsre I haven't. I don't really drink/use milk enough to really warrant buying another type (my girlfriend and I can barely finish what we do buy), but thanks for the suggestion! I grew up on rice milk which is... fine. My mom once made hot chocolate with it and it did not taste great. Water works well enough for me, but I might try something else some day.
Sooo, how do you make it with milk? I've always used water that i heated up in a kettle. I really have no idea how to heat up milk for it safely.
Hot take: If it has milk, it's just warm chocolate milk. ...I like that better still, but there you go.
Once again, Mal is the voice of the people
tfw KZread recommends a vlog from 2019 that cover the same topic after I watched this video! lol. And yes, you two did a taste test back then too. I think what make Stephen think it doesn't matter back then is due to different brand and you didn't put enough mix into it.
I've always had hot chocolate with water... and loved it every single time.... I wonder what wonders I'd experience if I tried it with milk.... Also you did try this at the old house (it was in the suggested video list - 1.10.2019)
Great video, thanks for sharing! Although, I might take a tip from the manufacturers. Some directions say mix with warm milk, others say mix with warm water. I believe this is a clue which could lead to the best results.
Both are good. Typically I default to water because it's not as sweet, but whenever I feel the need for something sweeter I go for milk.
Did you warm it up before or after you put the chocolate in?
I've only ever had Swiss Mix so it's just normal to me to just add hot water since my family rarely gets Milk.
I'm lactose intolerant, so even though I can use a Lactaid, it's just a hassle. I grew up using water and I will probably continue to use water unless, like Stephen said, I have milk to use up, which I never do, because I didn't drink it growing up.

This is old asf but still If your using Swiss miss add a splash of almond milk into it. So it’s still rich
I've always done it with water honestly. I tried it at one point with milk, but the 'hot milk' aspect was something I was definitely not happy with, so I've always stuck with water. Although I use like 4 big spoonfuls of powder too.
I just checked a container of Swiss Miss and one of the listed ingredients was nonfat milk, so it's definitely one that would matter less if it was made with water instead of milk.
I looked up the ingredients and there is non-fat dry milk in Swiss Miss. That might be why that particular hot chocolate is okay with water. Now that I know this, I think I understand why some people like hot chocolate with water. I grew up on homemade hot chocolate, so I’m always in the milk camp.
The only time I ever used water for hot chocolate was when the powder was specifically for water. Otherwise, always milk, all the time.
I've done water until recently. Milk is a good option. However I did the Swiss miss plus water and then a couple scoops of ice cream for cooling and froth.
I'm glad you're advancing the cause of science
Glad Stephen has finally been enlightened, but I do wonder if he would have the same opinion if he had this particular brand of hot chocolate powder with only water instead of only milk. I'll also add that hot chocolate powder containing powdered milk is something I never actually really thought about and as someone else in the comments said, how it could affect whether or not using milk is super necessary.
As someone who drinks Swiss Miss and grew up using water but then switched to milk, I can tell you right now that it's the same result. The first time I tried going back to the water I actually spit it out.
What do the instructions say for the hot chocolate you guys are using? Maybe it says to only use milk. Swiss miss that I’ve had, I never really checked the instructions, but water tasted good with it. I’m sure it has powdered milk
That was a great comparison test. And you have lovely sister.
Oh hey, I have a Silly Cow bottle too. Mine's Chocolate Marshmallow Swirl. Although honestly, I can't taste the marshmallow, it's still pretty good hot chocolate! Also, hot chocolate and other hot drinks are actually good for you in the Summer! Something about the heat makes you sweat more, which in the end makes you cool down more. As opposed to something cold like ice cream, which your body has to heat up to digest.
I had always thought hot chocolate powder already had dried milk in it, making extra milk unnecessary. Could depend on the brand though.
Something that's kinda fun is making it with water, and then adding powdered milk. That's what I like to do.
So what I've been doing for years is Making it with water and then adding cold milk after. I've only ever made Swiss Miss at home btw.
Most instant hot chocolates available on the market have powdered milks as part of their ingredients so you can use water without sacrificing flavor. The hot chocolate you're using there I don't think has the powdered milk in it since it's meant to be used with milk
How long do you heat the milk?
I also say it should be made with milk. What's the best way to warm it? I've always just used the microwave.
The only choccy milk i have with water is Mio , and its amazing
Would love to see you to do a comparison for tea or hot cocoa microwave versus kettle or stove pot boiled. I believe there is a difference.
Hot cocoa is with milk, period. However, fun fact! In the beginning, Aztecs used to drink their chocolate with water (xocolatl) because they didn’t raise cattle for milk. However, their drink was much different from what we call hot cocoa today: bitter, with chilis in it, and I guess more like a tea? I had a variation of it at a restaurant back in Mexico City and while I enjoyed it, it was definitely not hot cocoa.
I always used water and after that abit milk I didnt know people actually used water or milk alone
Throughout my whole life my family would always use Milk with our hot chocolate due I think the creamy texture, I have tasted water with hot chocolate but depending on how well it made at any food places or the chocolate that is used in the water, most of the time I can still taste that it’s water.
I tend to use about a quarter cold milk and the rest hot water, and it's pretty good. If we have no milk left and I just use water, it really does taste very different. I don't know the last time I used entirely milk. Maybe I'll try it later.
Always water for me. I tried the powder with milk and I hated it :/ With water it's always nice for me. Then again, it may have just been a brand that wasn't nice as the powder usually says add milk or add water. Never says you can try with the other
Regardless of hot cocoa brand, I've always preferred it with milk. The creamier flavor was just more pleasing to me taste-wise. I'll drink it with water if I have to, but it's just doesn't feel as much of a comfort to me by comparison.
If you somehow actually prefer water instead of milk you are a confirmed lizard person.
He has seen the light!
If you’re in a home, you always use milk. If you’re out in the wild, then water is accepted.
This was such a no-brainer ! How did you ever think milk and water could be anything alike !?? HOWEVER…. Add powder milk to the water mix and THEN see if you can distinguish between them
I add some water in with whole milk (about one eighth to one quarter cup per full cup of milk.) The only problem I find with milk is if it is starting to get old and the flavor has changed or it has soured, when the milk is heated that flavor will be magnified. I always do a milk taste test before making hot chocolate. Whipping cream on top brings back the fullness that the bit of water may take away.
Yeah Swiss Miss and hot chocolate powders that have dry milk in them are slightly less noticeable, but you do need milk if the powder doesn't have a lot of dry milk powder in it.

When I've made homemade hot cocoa powder I put powdered milk in it.
Technically swish Miss does have powered milk but we always find that adding milk Makes it better anyway.
This is one of those things that is related to that update video lol
As a scout I can verify that there is also a huge difference in hot chocolate made for water. The best ones are diffenetly the ones with milk powder or a form of creamer in the mix. Some mixes are better with water because milk doesent react the same to the cream-powder, then it just seperates….
I can't believe milk vs water is even a debate.
I’ve had the Swiss Hot Chocolate K-cups and I really need a splash of creamer to get over the Choco Water taste, I just can’t do it
D-do you not make hot chocolate with water and then add a little bit of milk, like you would tea or coffee?

Milk make It Nasty
It's unfortunate that I honestly haven't gotten the chance to make hot chocolate with milk for quite a while. We rarely have any use for milk in my home, so we typically don't have any in our fridge to use.
A 30 year old corpses who died from it's tongue being cut off will be able to tell the difference between water and milk hot chocolate
I'm a milk person in my hot chocolate however due to lactose intolerant I use milk substitutes instead. I've tried almond milk with it but I'm curious about oat milk and I like drinking oat milk. To anyone who has tried that, is oat milk good with hot chocolate?
with the little packets I use water with a splash of milk. water costs me cents while I need milk for meals
It's regional! If you use stuff like Swiss Miss, I feel that milk is better. However, some powders are made to be made with milk- a local shop here makes a chocolate mixture I just like hot chocolate though :3 I can definitely taste the difference, but I prefer water for speed most of the time.
I don't see never expect to see a hot chocolate in August. For me I usually put water
You should really follow the instructions on the tub of hot chocolate powder maybe it’s just a Uk thing because if you do used milk in the add water hot chocolate it tastes horrible and the powder doesn’t dissolve properly which can also be said about putting water in the add milk hot chocolate also Stephen you put the powder after the milk/water
When I make hot chocolate I use water to mix it together and then I add milk to cool it off a bit and to make it creamier,
if you do not have a chance to make with milk, because you are at work without the option of making with milk try and add coffee creamer if you can. but the true way to make it is on the stove top with milk.
I quit drinking hot chocolate a long time ago because it tasted so weak, watered down and dissatisfying. The package always said mix with water. I'm going to buy some and try it with milk.🤔 Thanks!
I use water for store bought hot chocolate mixes, but ALWAYS milk if I make it from scratch (What I usually do btw). It always says, on the store bought mixes, to use a certain amount of hot water, so that's why I use that instead of milk. Edit: I'll try the premade mix with milk the next time we have it in the house :)
10-20% cold milk in first over the powder, then top up with hot water.
I'm lactose intolerant so I go with coco powder, water and add honey. it's really good, I don't miss the milk at all.
I always used water for powdered hot chocolate packets, but in my brain those are already inferior because my mom can make it homemade and it is THE BEST. (I don't know her recipe, but it involves milk and unsweetened cocoa powder. You know something's good when it has unsweetened cocoa powder in it). Also, I don't actually like warm milk, and don't trust myself to mix the powder in thoroughly enough to mask that taste.
Not even a question, whole milk all day with even a a little cream added with Marshmallow to boot. But maybe it's a New England thing but would not have with out milk
I always been drinking hot cocoa with milk but I wanna try with water cause I'm sick and diary isn't good for you with a cold
I gotta say, I always like seeing you having a more "scientific" approach to things (I don't know if "scientific" would be the right word for it, that's why it's in quotation marks). I know you're not gonna write a paper on it, but you always seem to approach a problem (or, in the case of this video, a pretty much trivial question lol) with a methodological angle: you identify the problem/question in case; you think of possible solutions; you do some kind of testing to see if what you thought was right/wrong, etc.; and finally, you reach a conclusion, which actually seems to be able to change your mind, as this video proves (again, even if it's something as simple as "water vs milk in hot chocolate"). It always makes me wonder about your scientific education growing up, or maybe it's something that developed in you later in life? Either way, I always enjoy seeing people do those kinds of stuff. Anyway, regarding the subject of this video, I don't actually drink hot chocolate much, but if I do, I'm always gonna drink it with milk. Hot chocolate with water seems like a sin 😂
To be honest I usually usr hot chocolate with water, I’ve actually used multiple different brands and types and some really just aren’t the good and taste like watery chocolate. Others are way better and taste more creamier like milk hot chocolate so I’m pretty sure they some have powdered milk in them which make them way better. I would say overall, the ones with powdered milk in them they you add water too are my favorites
Milk not only makes hot chocolate better with the cream & smoothness with its taste, it’s also less likely to burn your tongue off when you go to drink it than if you use water.
Once again, we've always made hot chocolate with milk, and we've always used the hot chocolate mix from Penzeys. I love it. I know it's not for everyone, and you guys don't like it, but I do. Would it make a difference with milk instead of water, or have you had it with both and just don't care for it in general?
I have always used and chosen milk for my hot chocolate. Though in childhood, water was always used
The only reason I do hot chocolate with water is because we like to brew it in the coffee maker to make it hot, and you can't really do that with milk without screwing up the coffee maker. Otherwise, milk is always the better option
You can make hot chocolate that taste good with water all you do is put it in with water mix it up and put it in microwave from 1 minute and 50 seconds and mix it up again let it sit till its not to hot
After having water with hot chocolate for several years, I have to say milk is definitely better. The only reason I didn't have milk with hot chocolate sooner is that I didn't read the directions for a long time.
