Miles City Montana Walking Tour - 4K City Walks - Virtual Travel Walking Treadmill Walk
We were traveling around the wonderfully open and expansive South East Montanana and I found time to squeeze in a walk in the historic Miles City.
Mostly famous for it's Bucking Horse Sale every year since the 1950's, Miles City is also a historic and important commercial center for the eastern half of the state. We get a bit into the history, the time the Army bombed the river, and see some if its historic downtown and nearby residential homes. See wikipedia info below.

Miles City is a city in and the county seat of Custer County, Montana, United States. The population was 8,410 at the 2010 census.
1944 bombing
In March 1944, an ice jam on the Yellowstone River caused flooding which reached into Miles City. After unsuccessful attempts to clear the jam using local resources, help was requested from the Army Air Corps by the Montana governor. A B-17 bomber was dispatched from nearby Rapid City, South Dakota and cleared the ice jam using 250 lb bombs.
Annual bucking horse sale
The largest event of the year is the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale held in May. Miles City is also home to the Eastern Montana Fair and is the commercial hub of southeastern Montana. The sale is generally held regardless of weather.

Found this very interesting. I'm 61 years old and live in Scotland. As a young boy of 10-11 years I used to playfully write out cheques on a Miles City Bank chequebook that belonged to my deceased grandad. He emigrated to USA in 1898 and ended up wandering the prairies in Montana with 1000 sheep, a shotgun and a horse. He came back to Scotland for a holiday around 1920 and met my granny so never went back. His name was Farquhar Renwick and he got the name 'Scottie.' His brother John stayed on in Montana and actually died out there. Here I am all these years later going through the very city he did his banking in. It's very evocative for me. If these names ring a bell in anyone's mind I 'd love to hear from you.

Nice job. My wife is from Miles City and we were just there last week. Always enjoy heading up to the Airport Inn for pizza, finger steaks, and appetizers. Breakfast at the 600 on Main is always good too.

You took quite a jaunt! I was born and raised in Miles City. FYI, the Buckinghorse sale is always the third weekend of May. As you crossed over the bridge, and you would not know this, over to the right hand side is what used to be the red light district. When I was in high school we used to love to drive by it at night. Small town fun, lol. Thanks again for the nice video.

In the 70's we had two railroads, BURLINGTON Northern and Milwaukee which the turned into a 2nd road to Kinsey. Back then the big graineries were there and they had docks where they used to shear sheep.

Amtrack use to run through Miles City. It actually ran on the Milwaukee Railroad on the north side. That track is no longer complete and only resides so the Train Car repair shop has a place to set cars outside of their tracks. It enters BNSF Railway that you are looking at to the east of town. Milwaukeee railraod had a more over the land route and BNSF has a lot of riverside track. As a side note the Milwaukee Railroad had a yard here(Currently Owned as a repair place-Name changes and I am unsure of the current name). There was a round table so they could turn cars around. I believe it is still used by the company here.

I grew up in Miles City, I am the only one who has fallen off the over Pass, I was sliding down the fresh snow, my foot caught a rock and I did a swan dive to the sidewalk, blocking my head with my left wrist breaking it. To this date no one that I know of has done that. But there is a tree growing there now.

I know this is an old video but having lived here all my life I have seen it -53 without windchill factor. Oil strung from my trucks dipstick 2 1/2 feet to the tube on the engine. Also the Olive Hotel is where Lownsome Doves cattle drive ended, and yes that really happened. They would drive cattle here from Texas and sell it here. We had a stockyard, and railway for cattle.

Oh man, that's COLD! Thanks for sharing these memories. -H
Liked that walk. I like cowboy country. In my grandfather's youth he was a cowboy but grandmother was never a cowgirl. But he taught me how to shoot. In his basement room he had a saddle and some furniture made with cow horns. My brother was indirectly involved in the oil industry because his engineering company built rigs and pipelines. I like solar energy, but not the wind turbines because in just one year they killed 650 eagles. I would like to keep the oil industry and clean coal until everyone had another way to be warm or cool. Like right now people in California don't have enough electricity to run their air conditioning and with the fires, how terrible would it be to have the keep the windows open just to breath? But thank you for the great walk.
@CityWalks
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Yes, I'm a big fan of solar as well, and if you have it on your house with a battery system, you don't have to worry about fires taking down power lines. The smoke, though is terrible. We've been getting some of it here in MT and it must be even worse in CA. -H
