Mike Tyson vs Tony Tucker - Full Fight - 8-1-1987
Bout Summary:
Boxing has an undisputed heavyweight champion, and he is Mike Tyson. Tyson hammered out a unanimous 12-round decision over Tony Tucker tonight at the Las Vegas Hilton Center. But it was not a vintage performance by the victor, who had a problem landing more than a single punch at a time. That was because Tucker, the International Boxing Federation champion, fought a survivalist's fight. Though he rattled Tyson's head with jarring right uppercuts and straight right leads early in the match, Tucker lost the snap in his punches after the fourth round and mostly fought to make it through the 12-round distance. He did last the distance. He circled and grabbed. He sidestepped Tyson's charges or deflected them by pushing Tyson with his gloves. Sometimes he neutralized his opponent by pressing Tyson's head down as the 21-year-old slugger came forward. But Tyson, the World Boxing Council-World Boxing Association champion, landed the big punches over the last two-thirds of the fight. Tucker came alive again only in the final round when he landed a thudding left hook against Tyson's head. All three judges voted for Tyson, with Phil Newman scoring it 119-111; Julio Roldan, 118-113, and Bill Graham, 116-112. There were no knockdowns. Tucker used the sort of tactics that have frustrated Iron Mike in previous bouts - against James (Bonecrusher) Smith last March and for a few rounds against Pinklon Thomas in May. But Tyson showed patience tonight, using his jab to establish his offense more than he had in the past when opponents grabbed and clinched excessively.

    Tucker was actually a great boxer. He was 6'5" and extremely athletic. In his first 55 fights his only 2 losses were decisions to Tyson and Lennox Lewis. Many top fighters ducked him. Tyson's jab was beautiful in this fight. This was Tyson the boxer, and not so much the slugger. Great high level fight by both men

    @@kforcer It happened a few times. Before he lost to Douglas, a good percentage of fighters that made it past 6 with him did it by hugging most of the fight. Quick Tillis probably did the best against him in his early fights. He definitely had weaknesses. Anyone with reach that actually bothered to keep him at a distance with the jab gave him trouble. Everyone writes Buster Douglas off as a fluke, but he was a decent boxer, had a huge reach advantage, and a good jab. Lennox Lewis is another example. The other is if he runs up against someone who can take his punches, because after 20 fights or so he started to eat a lot of shots diving in the way he would. He had a great chin. You can't come up with a lot of singular shots that hurt him, but he would wear down over time if he got caught enough times.

    Imagine if Tyson hadn’t suddenly lost Jimmy Jacobs, had kept Kevin Rooney, & stayed away from Don King. At the pace at which he fought he would’ve KO’d Douglas in the 1st round, & gone 50-0 by age 26. A solid family in Catskills would’ve made all the difference in the world.

    @Orange6921

    Жыл бұрын

    @@gabrielsteffensen3700 Tucker, Spinks and Ruddock were his biggest wins. I don't count Holmes because he was over the hill and retired. Its not really Tyson's fault he did not have more big name wins (he literally fought everyone avaible), but a lot of the best fighters of the 80's derailed their careers with drugs, lawsuits and stupidity. He should have had great fights with Tim Witherspoon, Michael Dokes and Tony Tubbs but Witherspoon was out of the picture for multiple reasons and Tubbs was fat as a pig when they fought. Dokes was a crackhead. Tyson's strongest opponent was always going to be Holyfield who was unifying the cruiserweight belts at the same time Tyson was unifying the heavyweight belts. By the time Evander had moved up and moved into the #1 contender spot Tyson got KO'd by Buster Douglas and then went to prison. So that shot the Holyfield fight all to hell. If not for the loss to Douglas and the prison stint, we would have got a legendary trilogy with Tyson and Holyfield from 1990-1992. I imagine Evander would have shocked Mike in the first fight because he was getting sloppy and bored with his career. Evander was primed and ready and way better that Tyson or anyone else realized. And Evander knew how to fight Tyson and was not intimidated.

    Tyson's discipline and focus is what made him who he was. He wasn't exceptionally strong or tall or fast as far as high caliber boxers go - but he was very, very disciplined and focused. No jerry curl, no fancy robes, no hype, no showboating - nothing that would subtract energy from him. Even after he wins, he's commenting how he's not happy because he's less than perfect, and he hasn't achieved his goal of perfection. That's what differentiated Tyson from other high caliber boxers.

    Tony Tucker was a great fighter and was extremely underappreciated. What amazes me about Tyson at this young age is how low he goes to avoid a punch. His power was still there, but his defense and speed were not the same.

    Mike is a legendary boxer. Cus D'amato was aproponent of the peek-a-boo style of boxing, in which the fighter holds his gloves close to his cheeks and pulls his arms tight against his torso. The style was criticized by some because it was believed that an efficient attack could not be launched from it.

Methinks Mike partied hard leading up to this one, as he was known to do after he won his first title. You can see how disappointed he is in himself during the post-fight interview. @@FirstLast-yc9lq Bullshit. It was an overrated punch. He couldn't knock down Tyson. At least Tyson hadn't glass- chin but McCall destroyed Lewis in the second round easily. This Mcall lost to Tucker,Bruno and couldn't ko a very old Holmes. It was funny when the featherfisted Mccall destroyed Lewis easily, debunked the shit out of Lewis..

    I fully believe that Tony Tucker was in VERY GOOD shape for that fight back in '87, and he was fully well capable of beating Mike in the late rounds. But as fate would have it, he was only held back back by a stupid hand injury which he suffered while training/prepping on the day before... He was mostly fighting with his left hand throughout that fight, cuz it seemed like his right hand was BROKEN. I fergot what round it was exactly, but at point Tony managed to hit Mike like clean on the chin with a good strong powerful uppercut that appeared to have ROCKED him back a few steps. Not too many opponents were actually able to land such good clean hits on Mike back then when he was still in his prime. If Tucker's right hand was NOT injured that night, he prolly would've been able to connect with alot more hits like that to punish Mike whenever made a mistake; and if those hits all landed perfectly then Mike would've been in SERIOUS trouble. I speculate that it would've looked just like the Buster Douglas fight that eventually came 3 years later! 🤔

    Sugar Ray was the only guy in the world who saw this as close. He was ready to hit his knees for Tucker b/c he’d had a good 1st round. He was dominated by Tyson.

    This damn near was the Lenox Lewis blueprint.. no cap.. Lewis Perfected it and tyson was going downhill at that point as well.

    People saying how great tucker did in this fight, and all I can think about is how Mike advanced on him throughout this entire bout. Think about that for just a second.. not one single time did Tucker step towards Mike. He was in reverse “so to speak” the whole time backing up, while Mike steadily came in literally throughout the entire fight. I’ll say that Tony Tucker did better than the previous men that Mike walked through. But he’s nothing to praise. Not being rude just being real.

    Show this to anyone who says "Tyson was unbeatable." Tucker had a broken hand throughout this whole fight; Tyson couldn't do squat.

    That's just where Spinks should be,he cowered against mike terribly. He just wanted the payday. He didn't even try.I lost so much respect for Spinks after the Tyson fight.not because he lost.but because of his lack of effort.after me saying that he was the best light heavyweight champion other than Bob Foster I'd ever saw...I lost Lot's of faith in him as a man after not even trying against mike.

    Mike knocked all Tucker's Jheri Curl out so Tucker left with an afro. I hope there were no eye injuries due to this.
