Mike's Uniflite Trawler, Hynautic Helm H20 Steering Repair

Well found out I didn't have any steering, Everything dry as a bone. Could not believe there was little or nothing about doing it yourself on the internet regarding this Hynautic helm. So here I go. Added fluid, added pressure....found leak! One cooper line squirting juice. Looked like from friction break against dirty deck. Cut at leak point and fixed with cooper tube connector. Then...Steering cylinder was loose as goose. Re-bolted down. Then...found leak at lower helm shaft...Fixed I hope as per this video.

Thank you very much for the video Mike! You save me about $700 in labor cost to have the local expert do it for me. On tear down, The only seal that was damaged was the hard rubber complex shaped seal that had embrittled and Disintegrated. I replaced all three small seals as you did. Of note the complex seal can be slid on to the shaft first before the other seals. If you wait to do it last, you have to stretch it over a wider diameter section of the shaft with more difficulty and Potential for damaging the new seal as you install it. I was lucky and I did not stretch the CO2 breakage but I will not do it that way next time. I replaced my upper helm- bleeding was easy, simply turning wheel left and right 20-30 turns until all air was out of the lines.

Thank you for this video. KZread has helped me so many times with contributions from people like you. I'm having problems trying to align that pin that goes into the shaft and the slot it matches up to in the housing of the pump.

Thanks for the video, yeah really strange there was almost nothing online about this very common helm pump. Hope I got the right seal kit as well, they say 78 and prior and 79 and newer for another one. Well my sailboat is 1980, but who knows when the builder bought the pump? Could have sat around a year or two, lol. Thanks again!
