Rebuilding a Hynautic H50 Hydraulic steering helm, All new seals, No more leaks!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you have a Hynautic H-50 steering helm in your boat, you'll want to watch this. These helms have been discontinued, not because of any flaw or such, but Hynautic was purchased by Seastar (Dometic), and they have moved away from the 3 line systems found in many older boats.
If your helm develops a leak, the upgrade path to a new helm is not cheap, nor easy.
However rebuilding your helm isn't hard at all despite what several websites online claim.
You don't need to be a superhuman demigod to manage to repair one of these, just a regular old human being with some patience and care can easily rebuild a helm in a matter of an hour or so.
➡Extra information over on the website including bleeding instructions: trythistv.com/hynautic-h50-re...
➡You'll need this seal kit: amzn.to/37vYzCZ
Which should cover H50, H51, H52, basically any of the H50 series hynautic hydraulic steering helms.
You will also need some fluid to refill and bleed the system after the rebuild
There are several options for the best fluid. It must meet H5606 specifications, which I have selected my favorite options below:
➡1Qt OEM Seastar fluid: amzn.to/3ueS0P3 (A bit pricey but works good)
➡1Qt Shell Aeroshell 41: amzn.to/2M76PC7 (Cheaper, and also one of the fluids recommended by Hynautic/Seastar)
➡1Gal Shell Aeroshell 41: amzn.to/3durUkY (If you're unsure if your fluid is contaminated or such, a gallon of this stuff isn't awful expensive)
Links used on our channel are likely affiliate links, which earn us a small commission if you choose to purchase from one of them at no extra cost to you, and that helps keep us making videos like these.

Awesome video- Able to rebuild my H-51 no problem- One suggestion- install the shaft in the piston housing, then install the whole assembly sideways into the main housing. I fought forever unsuccessfully trying to line up the pin/slot until I realized I could install the assembly outside the housing- worked perfectly first time.

Many thanks for the video. Just rebuilt my H-50 helm following fluid leak at the wheel. Problem was the shaft seal exactly the same as in your tutorial so I followed the same steps and now have it all installed back on the boat - with no leak! Saved me some cash for sure!!!! Out of hundreds of boat DIY videos that I have watched, this is by far, the best one I have seen so far. I am rebuilding the systems on a 1987 Carver Voyager that I bought at the end of the season last year. One of the issues is that the upper helm H50 is leaking, so I ordered a seal kit. Your video is concise, complete and very professionally done. The production values are great. Audio is at a perfect level and the lighting/camera work is excellent. This video gives me the confidence that I need to tackle this project. Great job!

These hydraulic steering systems are neat for sure, and they are built to last a long time, very well designed. A little complex? Maybe, but I'd rather have any kind of hydraulic steering than a cable style, I like the feel of the hydraulic steering better than the feedback a cable driven system offers.

  • @trythistv

    @trythistv

If I recall properly, I had to open the purge valves, top up the reservoir, pressurize it, then crack the lines on the back of the helms to get the large volume of air from the lines, then spin the wheel repeatedly to get the remainder of the air out, and I had to top up the fluid and repressurize the reservoir once or twice during this process, having someone keep an eye on the level to make sure it doesn't get too low. I had some real goofy trouble trying to bleed the system, do you have the instructions on how to do it? if not they're available here: trythistv.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Hynautic3linebleed.pdf Also you'll want some fluid: amzn.to/2M76PC7 (quart) amzn.to/3durUkY (gallon) is the same stuff as seastar/hynautic uses, just in a different bottle basically. Thicker hydraulic oils or ATF can make bleeding and steering more difficult.

I'm curious, are you in the US or elsewhere? Every seal kit I can find for your helm seems to ship from Australia or the UK, so I'm not sure shipping your helm to me would be worth it if you're overseas, but I am curious how it differs from the hynautic/seastar, it looks very similar as far as the seals go.

I would say if the helm is making nasty bearing noises it would be good to take it apart and inspect just in case something is broken and about to cause you serious issues. I'm certainly no expert on these helms, but in my opinion they aren't that complex and I wouldn't hesitate to pull it apart to inspect, and replace the seals while you're in there, these are getting quite old and rubber seals most certainly have a lifespan!

Just to add this cost me £30 for the seal kit and about 4-5 hours changing them and repressurising the system compared to £1000 plus from our resident engineer for a new helm with installation. Well worth having a go as I can now spend it on beer

Glad it helped you out, I feel there is a lot of fearmongering about this stuff, sometimes it is better to have someone else handle complicated things, but if you are patient and careful a lot of the time you can get the job done without any major issues, and you've proven that is true with these helms. I didn't think it was terribly complicated when I made the video, sure there are some delicate parts you wouldn't want to rebuild in a sandstorm or anything, but with reasonable care, it isn't rocket surgery.

I suspect you've gotten a large air pocket in the helm. Is yours a pressurized system that has the little reservoir you fill and then pressurize? If so here is what I did when I ran into that issue, not saying it's the right thing to do or that it's even smart, but it worked for me lol: make sure there is enough fluid in there, then pressurize it, then get some rags or a catch pan ready under the helm, and crack each line one at a time and make sure you get some liquid out, if possible, have a helper spin the wheel while you crack the lines, it was time consuming and not much fun to do but after doing that once or twice, refilling the reservoir and doing it again, the system got enough fluid in that I could continue with the bleeding process that is on the instruction paper.

That sounds like air to me. These are a bit troublesome to bleed, and any little leaks can introduce air into the system. Check what your pressure gauge reads, it should normally be around 20-30psi, if its lower then you've got a leak somewhere.
