I think in terms of chops and overall abilities as a drummer it's Mike Magini I'd prefer. Mike Portnoy was a great fit for DT because of his creative contributions that helped to define DT's written pieces of music. It seems that Mangini was relegated to being a long time session drummer in DT, playing drums for DT rather than being the DT drummer. I think the reason why DT didn't go with Virgil Donati in the first place was precisely because Donati was an even deeper composer/arranger than any of them between Petrucci, Rudess, and Myung, and is an alpha personality such that they couldn't reign him in (remember the audition video where Donati was trying to work out his own amazing ideas to their songs after sight reading Rudess' score!!!), where as Mangini might've been fine with being sideman...for a while anyhow.

totalmente Donati es mucho más técnico y profundo. El solo verlo con agarre tradicional de baquetas tocando metal. También verlo en Jazz como si nada, fue una locura.

You hit the nail right on the head... Portnoy has the feel, creativity and insane ideas that make DT... Mangini is amazing technically and played portnoys parts great but it just lacked the signature Portnoy sound. I hope Mangini gets an opportunity to shine elsewhere tho!

If you listen, Portnoy often obscures the rest of the musicians with his endless repetitive commentary. Mangini finds ways to flow on and around the phrasings. Portnoy plays some cool shut, but it's at the expense at the tightness and beauty of the overall. You're taking his performances out of context and giving them undue merit. To me, Portnoy will never approach the virtuosity of drumming creativity, vocabulary, and technical excellence of Mangini. Portnoy is great with Winry Dogs and Twisted Sister. DT is way above his pay grade.

  • @Leatherfacet

@@danlc95 I understand what you're saying and it could be applied in the present but Portnoy And Petrucci is Dream Theater. The rest of them are expendable. Also what Portnoy lacks in pure technique he makes up in flow, something Mangini lacks. But really, we're nitpicking.

@@danlc95 Haha, dude! Not really! Show us a DreamTheater part of the Mangini era that is more creative that some of Portnoys stuff. I mean, Mangini did nothing new. That also depends on the other band members. If you listen to the new DreamTheater stuff... over the years there are similar sounding parts. So, since Petrucci, Myung, Rudess and LaBrie are in the band... it will sound like DreamTheater, basically you could take every drummer who is able to play the last albums. Mike Portnoy IS DreamTheater, without Mr. Portnoy that Mr. Mangidoodelini would never ever have played for DreamTheater. So, it like saying Lars Ulrich is bad drummer. Moving on thin ice, mate!

I'm the biggest Portnoy fanboy ever and even I can admit Mangini is the technician between the two. MP is a VERY melodic drummer. Insane ability he has to nail the feel, pitch and sounds to weave through the songs and to just merge with the ensemble. MM is like a surgeon. Necessary, precise, calculated, highly technical. Doesn't hinder his ability to support and be present, but that's where all the "robot" criticism comes from. He's the frame around the canvas. Portnoy is a part of the painting.

The difference between those 2 performances (for who didn't know) is that Mike Portnoy on his drumplay was improvising as well, while Mike Mangini was playing just the same concert solo, over and over again, hundred times repeatedly. But to compare the drummers - they are both talented and even different in their playing drum style, etc.

Every metric possible says Mangini is better. However, there is a very subtle thing that most of people don`t pick up which is what to play when to play and this is where Portnoy is better. He plays bespoke drums. Mangini is all over the place with his exercises. Listen to Dream Theater live with Mangini, it`s almost painful.

Each has their pros and cons to me. Honestly, the first time I heard Mangini was in 2006. Portnoy, IMO, had started phoning in the drumming for DT. The creativity of his grooves had plateaued, and the "Portnoy beat" and "Portnoy fill" had begun to monopolize his playing, and to me (again, my opinion) had gotten stale. I saw this solo of Mangini and said "That guy needs to be in Dream Theater!" haha. I was overjoyed when he got the gig, and honestly I think he spent the perfect amount of time in the band, and I'm very excited to see what Portnoy does next. From a player perspective, Mangini is far and away better than Portnoy when it comes to any technical measurement of playing the drums. His limb independence, grasp of polyrhythms, using rudiments in his playing etc. far exceeds anything Portnoy and do. He does have a much better senes of groove than most players at his technical level, but there is always a mechanical feel to his playing. That's not always bad, especially in DT. Portnoy on the other hand, he's like the Lars Ulrich of Prog. And I don't mean that as an insult. Portnoy is one of the most important drummers in the world IMO. Listening to him makes prog accessible to people who maybe wouldn't have gotten into it. The early days, he was incredibly creative, used his limited rudimental skill to it's maximum. He didn't invent linear fills, but he certainly perfected them to the point that they are called Portnoy fills for a reason. Obviously his understanding of complex rhythmic ideas is there, and his ability to simplify them to the point that they still sound like a groove instead of an exercise in time is awesome. I think he's up there with guys like Gavin Harrison when it comes to this, and I think it's a very under appreciated skill in the world of prog drumming.

Years ago play offs were a thing. Today it's a question of style and preferences. For example, what is the criteria for judgement? Portnoy clearly showcases improvisation and in the moment invention. in contrast magini shows super human practice developed skills that only a veteran of much practice could reproduce so easily at will. The two are showing casing extreme opposite skill sets. I know managing can improvise and portnoy can pre determine. By scientific parameters managing wins out. But by human and musical it's anyone's choice. I prefer portnoy for dream theaters recordings but that said I equally enjoyed manginis invention and style on the drums. These days there is no use for drum battles. In the 30s it was rich versus kooper. Even then the audience was thorn as to who was better. One was technical and the other melodic. History has shown that music is richer for having more than one rather than a monopoly. Forget better on or worse and be thankful there is both. Punk v rock. Jazz v classical. I'll listen to it all thank you very much. Oh, and by the way. What's your name? If I watch you play live who the ruck cares if you are better or worse than someone else? I care care of I like what you are doing yourself then and compared to nobody. Remember, you exist to within all this! Just saying
