Mike Keneally Makes the Gravy

Музыка

The track is called “Celery,” but Mike Keneally sure makes it meaty! With a splash of distortion, chorus, and delay courtesy of plug-ins (“No actual amps were used or harmed in the making of the video!” he quips) his ’90s Gibson SG provides a taste of his new album, “The Thing That Knowledge Can’t Eat,” which includes guest jammers Steve Vai and Devin Townsend. Read our interview with Mike in the June issue. Check it out at cloud.3dissue.com/196659/1970...

Hey, Mike, I just wanted to say thanks for all the years of being and showing the world that someone can be an amazing musician who is all about music. What I mean is I don't see you as a guitarist when I watch you play it seems to me that the instrument is superfluous. Your music to me is about the notes the melody and harmony and the rhythms. I remember watching you play as a backup musician for Marc Bonilla back in the early nineties at Club Lingerie on the sunset strip. You were playing keyboards and you had what looked like a Mexican strat plugged into a solid state Finder. At the show, Marc had just released his first album with Shrapnel recorded and he was doing the big hair shred thing. He was sponsored by Yamaha so he had a bunch of Yamaha full stacks in the way Yingwie would have Marshalls. I was totally a shred head back in those days, but after watching you as the night went on you just got better and better. Finally, I lost all interest in what Marc was doing and I was totally blown away by your musicality. I saw this play out again when in the late nineties or early 2000s I can't remember exactly when you when the opening act for Steve Vai with your group Beer for Dolphins. It was a typical metalhead shred-worshiping crowd who was there to see Vai. As your band started; your music was very Zapa-esque in my opinion these goofy guitar worshipers were yelling out "You suck where's Vai bring out Vai". I was telling the people around me they have no idea what they are talking about. I was like dude this is one of the greatest musicians I have ever seen. You guys are idiots. then you go on stage a play backup guitar and keys for Vai and match him solo for solo. It was as satisfying as having a guy cut you off shoot you the finger and then get pulled over for reckless driving. Also, I was so stoked to see that you produced Jamie Kime's solo album Allieys. I use to follow his band around San Diego when he was in a group called Bizerkistan. You should ask him to play Cats from the House of Trip. They had so many great tunes. I should have to say between you and Jamie both of you shaped my direction in music the most.

Also, I want to make sure you understand I mean no disrespect to Marc Bonilla I think he is a very good guitarist. He's no Mike Landau or Jamie Kime but he is a great talent in his own right. And he has grown tremendously as a songwriter and musician. Thanks again for inspiring me for so many years.
