Hearing Bly Manor described as a "failure" sent a sad chill up my spine 😭 It's one of my personal favourites of his library.

I may not love everything he puts out but Flanagan is by far one of my favorite new voices in the horror genre . Hill House and Bly Manor will always have my heart
I am the person riding hard for Midnight Mass online 🤣 I’m not sure if a piece of media has ever spoke to me on such a personal level. My religious trauma and death anxiety felt so seen 🤣 Even the hymns used were ones I grew up singing!

Yeah I love Midnight Mass and it’s my 2nd favorite thing he’s done. The last 2 episodes didn’t work for me nearly as much as the rest, but I think the rest is really interesting and maybe the best written stuff of any Flanagan movie or show.
Watched Midnight Mass together with my mom and we were both crying at the end, talking about what death meant to us. Surely a very special memory and a great series. Great dive as always!

I watched it together with a guy I was dating last year and we talked about that “what happens when you die” scene for over an hour. He unfortunately and unexpectedly passed away at the start of this year and the show will always remind me of him. I miss him so much.
Im not sure if anyone else mentioned, but fun fact that Mike Flanagan tries to have the Occulus mirror make a cameo in all his projects since, somewhat like Sam Raimi's car does.
I first saw Karen Gillan on Doctor Who back in 2009/2010. That’s where she got her breakthrough and she uses her normal accent in the show. It’s always fun to see people’s reactions to finding out she’s Scottish because I was shocked when I found out how good her American accent was 😂

As far as Bly Manor, it is a let down only if thinking it would be so similar in tone and scares as Hill House. It shines in regards to romantic gothic storytelling as well as addressing LGBTQ themes. The love story is so tragic at the end and leaves me in tears to think about it. It is why it hasn't gotten a rewatch from me, knowing how heavy of an emotional wreck I'll be at the end.

Great deep dive. Mike Flanagan comes off as a guy that is as excited to make movies and shows as we are to watch them. He's just a genuine fan of film.
Oculus is my favourite horror movie and one of my favourite movies in general! The cinematography and the way they go from flashback to current reality to delusion is just… omg… its art
Yes! I've been waiting for this one! My favorite modern horror director today
You are so great. Thank you for all of the work you put into this, well done!!
Finally had time to watch this deep dive and it is so awesome.Very well done yet again with a deep dive video, Kylie 🙂. My favorite Flanagan movie is Hush, and i really hope we get a physical media of it soon cause i want it in my collection. 🙂
love love love this deep dive !!!! quite possibly (one of) my favorite directors of horror there is because he balances horror and heart masterfully; i’m so glad you did a deep dive on him. not to mention every horror fan has said he’s a great person to meet. for the sake of flanifans my favorite of his works is midnight mass. i’ve said it on your live but i maintain it’s his magnum opus.
Such an interesting and entertaining commentary. Great job!!!
YOOOO just finished this MASTERPIECE of a video !!! Definitely my fave in this series ! Mike is one of my favourite directors cause he’s so humble / simple and gets the job done ! I did not know about many things you mentioned like the crisis he went through with hush . Honestly , respect for him for breaking through the industry by himself and helping out his partner. At the end of the day , you are your biggest supporter, so respect. I actually enjoyed Gerald’s game ( except from that graphic scene ) cause I think the movie plays so well with humans psychology , Imagine that situation happening to you ! It’s pure torture . I feel like Mike Flanagan could be the perfect director for a conjuring film or the series . I CANT WAIT FOR WHEN YOU DO M. NIGHT ! My fave director for so many reasons ! My top 5 Mike’s products would be 1) Hush 2) Doctor Sleep 3) Hill house 4) Oculus 5) Gerald’s game

Great work on this video 🤩 Flanagan's work is so good!! The Haunting of Hill House has such a special place in my heart, it makes me emotional every time I watch it! I love Oculus as well. I can't wait to watch The Fall of the House of Usher and all of his upcoming adaptations!
Fantastic video! Thank you for giving Oculus the appreciation it deserves! It’s soooo underrated. I’ll forgive putting Gerald’s Game so low haha.
Yeah, I would definitely love to see an M. Night Shyamalan deep dive! 😀
Love the deep dive and just Finished watching Fall of the house of usher and already feel like rewatching it again and again and again. Especially enjoyed watching the range of Carla Gugino's performance.
wow wow wow! awesome work with this one!!! Flanagan has such an interesting story and seems like such a positive force, so rad to learn!! dope stanley hotel shirt! 💀 gonna have to watch Oculus, I’ve been slacking 😅 totally makes sense that Flanagan wants to do Dark Tower, I totally got that vibe from Doctor Sleep since it’s like the ultimate King-CU vibe, perfect fit. I’m sure you know I would looooove a David Lynch director deep dive, one of my all time favs and another director with fantastic inspiring positive stories and glowing reviews from cast and crew members. but he started in the 70s. (literally took a david lynch class in film school so would be down to like consult if that’s a vibe lol) thanks for the delicious content, absolutely exceptional stuff!!! stay spooky coven!
17:28 I knew Karen Gillan from Doctor Who, she was one of the many variations companions. Im glad her career kicked off from then because it seems Who actors actresses acting careers don't always go super far afterwards.
I started watching Harry Potter this week for the first time and I got recommended your harry potter videos. Seriously so much respect for sticking to it and uploading banger after banger for years. I know how tough it is when you work hard on a video and you don't get the views you expect. But just know the quality you put in your videos are not gone unnoticed. Love your vids, keep it up!
I gotta say, your editing on these videos just gets better and better. Excellent work, as always! I haven’t seen much of Mike Flanagan’s work, but I really liked Oculus. That’s definitely one of the most unnerving and creative horror movies I’ve ever seen. Also, I can’t help but wonder what his adaptation of It was like.

I love the intro it's so cool 🤘🔥, Mike Flanagan truly is one of my favorite modern horror directors working today Ibe watched almost all of his works this guy never misses my favorite work of his is Midnight Mass and this might be because it's a vampire show and I'm a major vampire fan Lol, also it would be a dream come true if Mike Flanagan got to do the Nightmare on Elm Street he was rumored to do a few years ago or if he did the Clayface movie for DC that's been recently going around too
I subbed. You're right. As a KZreadr, I hate seeing the percentages of clicks from non-subs, it's like, "Come on, I spent all day making this video for free, you can't give me one more click?" Meanwhile, I'm like, "I be watchin' this girl for like a year now, how I'm a be doin' the same shit to her that ppl do to me?" My inner monologue of insight is street af. - trevor.
Don’t know if you read old comments, but bravo on this bio. Huge Flan fan and, though I’m new to your channel, I think you do an outstanding job.
I also wanted to say great job on this one. I am a big fan of his work, but I never really delved into his background. Very informative, well made video. As far as the rankings, I easily have Dr. Sleep, Midnight Mass, and Gerald's Game as the top three. Although DS and MM are basically 1 a&b. I am also a big King fan and never thought that somebody could make a GG film as well as it turned out. Big props to him. Side note: Rose the Hat (or more specifically Rebecca Ferguson's performance of her) is top notch. Im hard pressed to think of another character that was as charming, alluring, and sexy as her while also being truly terrifying and horrific. And each side is as believable as the other. One of the best horror villains ever imo.
Amazing video love him even more now. Also I guess I gotta watch Oculus again, cause I remember really not enjoying it.
Damn this is such an impressive video and one of the best deep dives I've seen, well done! Thinking of doing a major binge leading up to The Fall of the House of Usher and this has gotten me even more excited. A deep dive I'd like to see would be that of James Wan. The dude gets a lot of hate which I think is unnecessary since he really changed horror back in 2004, and I know his films don't tend to be perfect but would be cool to hear your thoughts. Keep it up! P.s. as a Scot myself, Karen Gillan was first noticed in Doctor Who (which she had her accent) and Oculus was the first thing she really did AFTER Doctor Who which i thought was so cool at the time.
I adore Mike's work. I can't wait to devour even more of it.
Omg. Huge Flanagan fan and just found u recently and oculus is my #1 too! Now I'll subscribe to u. Lol
Flanagan is genuinely my favorite currently working director. I was introduced via Hill House in 2020, then went through his filmography from there. Doctor Sleep has been my favorite movie of all time since I first watched it, and 7 watches later, that opinion only strengthens. Loved the deep dive into this man's work!
the very first horror movie I saw when I was 12 was Oculus, and it hooked me forever on the type of emotional psychological horror he makes to this day. couldnt have asked for a better intro to horror! also in interviews he talks a lot about how terrified of everything he was as a kid, and I was the exact same way. his horror media feel cathartic to me in a way few other things are.
Every Mike Flanagan series has at least one long sequence all about death and how a character views it, and I really like how comparing them to each other shows small differences and big similarities in what he wants to say. Also, seeing you put Hush above every Flanagan show I love has seriously made me question my decision to watch the movie with friends as a bad horror night movie in Mandarin for the first time (I do not speak Mandarin). We were just having fun with it the whole time so I completely missed any sort of serious enjoyment or horror.
This is officially my favorite series of yours. Everytime we get one it's like a little burst of Halloween. I keep saying every new Deep Dive of these is your best work and while that's still true , I also want to say this is your most relaxed video in this series. The whole was very chill and super easy to relax to. Just a good time overall, and amazing work through and through. Fantastic job Kylie! And I just got the signed Halloween Blu Ray/DVD yesterday. Thanks for signing it! I'm thinking about posting a pic of it on my Insta. Do you mind if I @ you whenever it goes up? It might be a while though. I just want your consent first. There's a cult joke I want to use and it only makes sense if I reference you kinda thing. Nothing crazy haha

Love this deep dive. I recently saw Absentia, too. Midnight Mass is probably my number 1, just on the back of those performances. I don't think I've seen a better acted... anything. Plus I have an attachment to that particular monster type that goes back to my very, very small childhood. But love me some Dr. Sleep, too.
i’ve only fainted twice from watching gore in a film, and both are Flanagan movies. Gerald’s Game (the de-gloving scene) and Hush (the sliding glass door scene). something about hand injuries really get me. 😅
I watched Oculus and that movie blew my mind , I didn't expect that ending
I gasped when I saw the title. Watching immediately

Another well-put together deep dive video. Learned a lot about Mike and from what you mentioned about him, I can see why lots of people like him, especially people who have worked with him. I actually have been meaning to watch the Netflix shows he's done. Just from what I've seen from Haunting of Hill House and the shows that followed, they really interest me. Also hearing the rumor that he wants to do a movie on the DC character Clayface has gotten me excited cause the character itself is awesome and I think would do the character justice. YOU kick ass! Loved your list and are now going to re watch OCULUS. My Top two are Doctor Sleep and Midnight Mass. Stay Safe and THANKS AGAIN for the awesome content.
Oculus is my favorite too. The nonlinear from filmmaking, especially when the two timelines collapse together is a perfect representation of CPTSD. Saw it when I was 50 on bluray. Wish I had seen it in a theater.
This was an awesome analysis thank you! I’ve gotten into his work recently my personal ranking for what I’ve seen of his works so far would be: 1 Hill House 2 Midnight Mass 3 Bly Manor 4 Dr Sleep 5 Fall of the House of Usher 6 Midnight Club I love everything I’ve seen and choosing placement between the last two was difficult but Midnight Club took me out of it too much when they sung Good Riddance. Maybe it’s being a 90’s kid where that song was over saturated in school and TV but it took me so out of the story that I actually looked up the song and found a logic loophole where the song actually came out the following year after that scene took place. I still love the show and would rewatch in spite of season two being cancelled but I read somewhere it was cancelled because he now signed a deal with Prime video so maybe they’ll obtain rights and will have season two over there. One can dream…
My favorite Mike Flanagan film is Doctor Sleep. It’s incredible!
I never knew that fact about the Sonoma Film Festival and I live in Sonoma lmao
I'm just doing my own Mike Flanagan deep dive. (Thank you for this video essay)! I loved doctor sleep, midnight mass, hill house and Bly and kept an eye out for obvious relatives of that fam thus just watched and adored house of usher. Just wanted to say, as a person who was not specifically seeking out the director until now, I thought midnight club, at a glance, was a young adult show made for kids which maybe it still is but now that I know it's a Flanagan joint I will check it. Also, I watched Bly Manor (during the pandemic while trapped in a poisoned relationship so maybe that contributed but); I was terrified by the lady in the lake ghost. Also, gunna do a doctor sleep /shining double feature for halloween.
I’m obsessed with
Lol meanwhile there's me who loved Bly Manor and was sobbing by the end

Oculus was friggin awesome. It's really funny though to watch Oculus and then Hill House. You can see a lot of what Mike was trying to do Oculus come through in Hill House. Oculus really needed to be about 30 minutes longer, unfortunately it was not.
The only "miss" was Midnight Club for me - I just wasn't feeling it. The dude is really good at creating horror stories that don't rely solely on the horror to be effective.
The part in Dr Sleep that was so hard to watch was when the the true knot killed the little baseball player boy. It was brutal
Doctor Sleep has that one scene, everyone knows it. I'm a hardcore horror fan, and am very difficult to get to. The baseball boy scene disturbed me badly. Great movie!

Dang hearing about dvds being hard to to find makes me feel wild old lmao
I slept on Hush for a while, not even realizing who the director was. I finally decided to watch it and that movie kept me so on edge the entire time I had to watch cartoons after, lol. I used to not pay too much attention to who directed the movie before I watched it. If the movie was good, I would google it if I remembered to see who did it. When I googled who did Hush and saw it was Flanagan I did a deeper dive into his history. To my surprise, there wasn't a movie of his that I had seen that I didn't like so I immediately put the rest on my to be watched list. In fact, seeing he did Doctor Sleep is why I gave The Shining a second go. Oculus is happening this weekend and Hill House this summer. I honestly think that, and this could be a HUGE statement to make, that he and James Wan are this generations Craven and Carpenter. I saw Before I Wake and really enjoyed it and Geralds Game is still one of the most terrifying ideas to ever be placed in my brain. Not to mention the damn degloving seen. *Shudders*

They are!!! Completely!! Flanagan is carpenter with all his one off successes. Wan is craven with his constant reinvention and giant franchises
YES MAGGOT MOMMY BLESS US WITH CONTENT
You have to watch Bly like 4 times before it hits you square in the chest. All the shows are my favorite independent of each other. I never get sick of them.
4:38 Duuude, he was also traumatized by Killer Klowns??? I can relate to that so much, that fucking movie terrified me as a kid.
Mike Flanagan is one of my favorite horror directors of the 21st century, and his films are visually striking and beautifully haunting. If anyone asks me what's my favorite Mike Flanagan movie, I think it's either "Doctor Sleep" or "Oculus", but both movies are amazing just like the rest of his films and miniseries.💯✨️
YESSSS another oculus truther!!!!! it is my favorite movie of all time!!!!
Both Bly Manor & Midnight Club had Flanagan only direct the opening 2 episodes (Bly he only directed the 1st episode), plus more of a writers room collective than just solely him, which explains the dip in quality of both of them. Biggest issue with him seems to be that, while it’s great that he employs upcoming writers & directors to give spotlights to & ease his stress like Hill House, he unfortunately blows them all out of the water when he lays out terrific kick offs to shows that they just cannot follow 😬. Also why Midnight Mass was for many people a real return to form with his first in line involvement.
@QuikVidGuy
9 ай бұрын
I don't think Bly was a dip in quality at all, I thought it was better than Hill House. I think it's because Mike heavily values collaboration and helping all the parts move together, so you get a more full story with a greater depth of vision when there's always someone else there who sees the things you might not.
Yes I get the controversy of Hush. Yes, not all deaf people are mute, but Maddy is.

I have mixed to positive thoughts on Mike Flanagan, I have some critiques for some parts of his work, but I really like Geralds game, and absolutely love The Haunting of Hill House, he’s one of the few horror directors out there that had such a distinct style and putting out interesting content that I respect him on a creative level and are at least interested in seeing what he does… He’s a cool dude and I hope his best work is yet to come.
He's reliable and consistent. Like the opposite of M Night Shymalan.

Midnight Mass is my favorite!
Midnight Club wrecked me. I hate that it wasn't received well. Season 2 would have been a huge banger
This video was a journey! Also, I was your 666th like, but I wonder if that's a milestone. 😅
I lost interest in horror movies some time ago. We have to admit that they are not as good as they used to be. But since I’ve found this director… since I watched Hunting of Hill house I feel in love again. When that girl saw herself as the hanged girl ( like she was her own ghost ) for me there was nothing more original than that. Really, since I watched The Others at the cinema. It was so original, never done before. This guy has a great future if he keep going like that. And must interesting of all. His content makes me think. Like a drama movie. He has all the elements of a brilliant mind.
Absolutely loved The Midnight Club, Netflix cancelled it of course 😡
