I first saw Karen Gillan on Doctor Who back in 2009/2010. That’s where she got her breakthrough and she uses her normal accent in the show. It’s always fun to see people’s reactions to finding out she’s Scottish because I was shocked when I found out how good her American accent was 😂

As far as Bly Manor, it is a let down only if thinking it would be so similar in tone and scares as Hill House. It shines in regards to romantic gothic storytelling as well as addressing LGBTQ themes. The love story is so tragic at the end and leaves me in tears to think about it. It is why it hasn't gotten a rewatch from me, knowing how heavy of an emotional wreck I'll be at the end.

YOOOO just finished this MASTERPIECE of a video !!! Definitely my fave in this series ! Mike is one of my favourite directors cause he’s so humble / simple and gets the job done ! I did not know about many things you mentioned like the crisis he went through with hush . Honestly , respect for him for breaking through the industry by himself and helping out his partner. At the end of the day , you are your biggest supporter, so respect. I actually enjoyed Gerald’s game ( except from that graphic scene ) cause I think the movie plays so well with humans psychology , Imagine that situation happening to you ! It’s pure torture . I feel like Mike Flanagan could be the perfect director for a conjuring film or the series . I CANT WAIT FOR WHEN YOU DO M. NIGHT ! My fave director for so many reasons ! My top 5 Mike’s products would be 1) Hush 2) Doctor Sleep 3) Hill house 4) Oculus 5) Gerald’s game

I also wanted to say great job on this one. I am a big fan of his work, but I never really delved into his background. Very informative, well made video. As far as the rankings, I easily have Dr. Sleep, Midnight Mass, and Gerald's Game as the top three. Although DS and MM are basically 1 a&b. I am also a big King fan and never thought that somebody could make a GG film as well as it turned out. Big props to him. Side note: Rose the Hat (or more specifically Rebecca Ferguson's performance of her) is top notch. Im hard pressed to think of another character that was as charming, alluring, and sexy as her while also being truly terrifying and horrific. And each side is as believable as the other. One of the best horror villains ever imo.

Damn this is such an impressive video and one of the best deep dives I've seen, well done! Thinking of doing a major binge leading up to The Fall of the House of Usher and this has gotten me even more excited. A deep dive I'd like to see would be that of James Wan. The dude gets a lot of hate which I think is unnecessary since he really changed horror back in 2004, and I know his films don't tend to be perfect but would be cool to hear your thoughts. Keep it up! P.s. as a Scot myself, Karen Gillan was first noticed in Doctor Who (which she had her accent) and Oculus was the first thing she really did AFTER Doctor Who which i thought was so cool at the time.

Every Mike Flanagan series has at least one long sequence all about death and how a character views it, and I really like how comparing them to each other shows small differences and big similarities in what he wants to say. Also, seeing you put Hush above every Flanagan show I love has seriously made me question my decision to watch the movie with friends as a bad horror night movie in Mandarin for the first time (I do not speak Mandarin). We were just having fun with it the whole time so I completely missed any sort of serious enjoyment or horror.

This was an awesome analysis thank you! I’ve gotten into his work recently my personal ranking for what I’ve seen of his works so far would be: 1 Hill House 2 Midnight Mass 3 Bly Manor 4 Dr Sleep 5 Fall of the House of Usher 6 Midnight Club I love everything I’ve seen and choosing placement between the last two was difficult but Midnight Club took me out of it too much when they sung Good Riddance. Maybe it’s being a 90’s kid where that song was over saturated in school and TV but it took me so out of the story that I actually looked up the song and found a logic loophole where the song actually came out the following year after that scene took place. I still love the show and would rewatch in spite of season two being cancelled but I read somewhere it was cancelled because he now signed a deal with Prime video so maybe they’ll obtain rights and will have season two over there. One can dream…

I loved doctor sleep, midnight mass, hill house and Bly and kept an eye out for obvious relatives of that fam thus just watched and adored house of usher. Just wanted to say, as a person who was not specifically seeking out the director until now, I thought midnight club, at a glance, was a young adult show made for kids which maybe it still is but now that I know it's a Flanagan joint I will check it. Also, I watched Bly Manor (during the pandemic while trapped in a poisoned relationship so maybe that contributed but); I was terrified by the lady in the lake ghost. Also, gunna do a doctor sleep /shining double feature for halloween.

At first I wasn't planning on watching the whole video, but I actually did! And I'm not even what you may call a "Flanagan fan boy". Not because I don't like what he does, but because I haven't seen everything he did. Yet. I'm really happy I sat through this whole video because even though I really like what I've seen from him so far - which is very little: Doctor Sleep and Oculus - your deep dive into his career really opened my eyes to how great and important Flanagan is. He really does seem like a genuinely great dude. So great job on the video. I guess giving up my soul by subscribing wasn't such a bad deal after all...

Oculus was friggin awesome. It's really funny though to watch Oculus and then Hill House. You can see a lot of what Mike was trying to do Oculus come through in Hill House. Oculus really needed to be about 30 minutes longer, unfortunately it was not.

The only "miss" was Midnight Club for me - I just wasn't feeling it. The dude is really good at creating horror stories that don't rely solely on the horror to be effective.

The Haunted Hippie suggests watching The Shining and Dr. Sleep sequentially. That is a great suggestion. May I suggest watching the deep dive/exploratory discussion of both films she did with her dad as third on that list. It’s buddhic nirvana for film nerds IMHO

I slept on Hush for a while, not even realizing who the director was. I finally decided to watch it and that movie kept me so on edge the entire time I had to watch cartoons after, lol. I used to not pay too much attention to who directed the movie before I watched it. If the movie was good, I would google it if I remembered to see who did it. When I googled who did Hush and saw it was Flanagan I did a deeper dive into his history. To my surprise, there wasn't a movie of his that I had seen that I didn't like so I immediately put the rest on my to be watched list. In fact, seeing he did Doctor Sleep is why I gave The Shining a second go. Oculus is happening this weekend and Hill House this summer. I honestly think that, and this could be a HUGE statement to make, that he and James Wan are this generations Craven and Carpenter. I saw Before I Wake and really enjoyed it and Geralds Game is still one of the most terrifying ideas to ever be placed in my brain. Not to mention the damn degloving seen. *Shudders*

Mike Flanagan is one of my favorite horror directors of the 21st century, and his films are visually striking and beautifully haunting. If anyone asks me what's my favorite Mike Flanagan movie, I think it's either "Doctor Sleep" or "Oculus", but both movies are amazing just like the rest of his films and miniseries.💯✨️

Both Bly Manor & Midnight Club had Flanagan only direct the opening 2 episodes (Bly he only directed the 1st episode), plus more of a writers room collective than just solely him, which explains the dip in quality of both of them. Biggest issue with him seems to be that, while it’s great that he employs upcoming writers & directors to give spotlights to & ease his stress like Hill House, he unfortunately blows them all out of the water when he lays out terrific kick offs to shows that they just cannot follow 😬. Also why Midnight Mass was for many people a real return to form with his first in line involvement.

I don't think Bly was a dip in quality at all, I thought it was better than Hill House. I think it's because Mike heavily values collaboration and helping all the parts move together, so you get a more full story with a greater depth of vision when there's always someone else there who sees the things you might not.

I have mixed to positive thoughts on Mike Flanagan, I have some critiques for some parts of his work, but I really like Geralds game, and absolutely love The Haunting of Hill House, he’s one of the few horror directors out there that had such a distinct style and putting out interesting content that I respect him on a creative level and are at least interested in seeing what he does… He’s a cool dude and I hope his best work is yet to come.

I lost interest in horror movies some time ago. We have to admit that they are not as good as they used to be. But since I’ve found this director… since I watched Hunting of Hill house I feel in love again. When that girl saw herself as the hanged girl ( like she was her own ghost ) for me there was nothing more original than that. Really, since I watched The Others at the cinema. It was so original, never done before. This guy has a great future if he keep going like that. And must interesting of all. His content makes me think. Like a drama movie. He has all the elements of a brilliant mind.
