Mikaela Shiffrin talks skiing achievements, Lindsey Vonn and handling haters | Sports Seriously

Спорт

To say it's been a busy year for Mikaela Shiffrin would be an understatement.
The US skiing star has become the winningest alpine skiier in history with 88 World Cup wins, breaking Ingemar Stenmark's 86-win record. Mikaela talked to Sports Seriously's Mackenzie Salmon about what it feels like to win this title, and those who helped pave the way for her, like another skiing legend Lindsey Vonn.

    I'm not a supporter, I feel more as an admirer.... she is the greatest skier I've ever seen since long time ago. Lindsay is just the best downhiller, the gap in ski technic is huge.

    if you say so... then i need to say - Mikaela is just a slalom and giant slalom skier vs Lindsey downhill and SG. Fastest woman skiing in DH and SG = speed technic vs just a technic.

    @@gatigross1728 everyone has his/her own needs and opinion.... Sometimes the difference is huge also in opinions, speed technique is ski technique, with a talent in keeping aerodynamic position, flat ski and line choice. Lindsay had an exceptional talent for DH, very good talent for SG, good but common talent for GS and SL. After that, think about Mikaela... she is just the best skier the world has ever seen.

    I really like Mikaela and she is my favourite for now,.... after Lindsey Vonn. In any case, the fastest downhill skier is Lindsey Vonn. Downhill is real speed, not slalom or giant slalom. I think Mikaela will never be so fast as Lindsey in the fast courses.

    I personally don't get why people hate anyone? Some ppl might annoy me, or I disagree. I never hate them ? Usually in sports atheletes hate themselves, for not doing good enough. And sure as hell media are VERY good at pointing out failures, 4 pages etc. When they win 1 page. Mikaela Shiffrin ONLY !!! got silver.. Do they need others to hate them when they finally do well ? You should think about that .

    Ok Mikaela! I agree 100% if you want to put this GOAT classification aside! But you’re definitely the BOAT (Best Of All Time) as far as ski personalities are concerned! So excuse me for using this new acronym to describe such an excellent athlete!!! 🚤👍😎💙

    Yes, James. It's her candor; her sometimes-painful, developing public life. Probably like you, I've watched her grow from daddy's girl to "failing" Olympic athlete - to the growing wisdom of an amazing young woman. Thank you Mikaela for taking us on this enlightening journey. Mikaela a suggestion, and in keeping with your evident humility: would it be more difficult for a Male skier to reach 88? I think both of us agree the answer is yes. Ingmar, Marcel, Toni, Franz Alberto & Hermann might also agree.

    Nothing but respect for Mikaela and Lindsey. Obviously Mika is the GOAT of female alpine racing. Is she the GOAT period? Of course not. The best men would always kick her azz. Is that fair? Nope. Life isn’t fair. And lets just add unlike other sports such as soccer, basketball, tennis … where high school boys easily beat the worlds best women there are very few top men who can beat Mikaela. Mikaela may be the best female athlete relative to men that has ever existed on this planet. I remember one FIS slalom race last year, maybe the year before where the men and women ran the same course. Mikaela won the women’s and her time would have placed her ninth if competing with the men. Absolutely amazing. Literally the 9th best skier on earth on that particular day. Men or women.

    Yes. Skiing is a gravity-powered sport, so greater mass provides greater potential, all things being equal.

  • @mrsmartypants_1

    @mrsmartypants_1

    @@billd.5892 Your comment is absurd for numerous reasons. Anyone who has taken basic high school physics knows gravity affects all objects equally. If you drop a steel ball bearing or a feather, all things equal (ie in a vacuum), both objects accelerate equally and both will impact the floor at the same time. According to your incorrect, although very common fallacy, women should be faster in the 100 meter dash because men have more mass and therefore must overcome greater inertia at the start. The truth is of course top males in all sports have faster and stronger twitch muscles that when combined with the extremely complex subject of athleticism (hand eye coordination, the human brain interaction with all the stimuli, etc ) males are the superior sex in athletic endeavors. Take the top performers of any sport of equal weight and the males will always win. Rhonda Rousey would have been destroyed in the ring with a male contender of equal weight within seconds of the first round. Your brain rebels against these facts because of all the BS you’ve been fed through the years. With all that said I fricken love Mikaela. She is my favorite athlete, male or female in any sport I’m interested in. The tenacity of her mind, her discipline is what I respect most. I was a slalom racer and an extreme skier. Although my race team dominated our state for 4 years straight in the little fish bowl of high school athletics in a little upper Midwest state, Mikaela would have kicked my butt just as my buddy kicked mine between the gates who was a junior Olympian who spent summers in southern hemisphere ski camps while I golfed, whitewater kayaked, fly fished, water skied, drank beer and chased bikini girls on northern lakes, streams and rivers.

    Smarty, your oxymoronic name provides a clue to your arrogant answer. But before I address that, the strange reality is that you and I come to the same conclusion. Mikaela is extraordinary in many ways, and we both love watching her progress. Her work ethic (thx to her excellent parents) coupled with a large dose of inherent talent and excellent training are some of her assets.

  • @bobdavis2689

    @bobdavis2689

    Smarty, I brushed "reply" before I finished my above answer. I happen to have graduated from Harvard and suffered through a physics course there (proving to me that I clearly was not a "smarty-pants.") but I know one thing for sure, skiing is not conducted in a vacuum. It is conducted in the fluid known as air, and air has resistance. So what we are dealing with regarding gravity is the ballistic coefficient of a male versus female. And men almost universally have a Greater ballistic coefficient. That is the greater potential to which I referred.

    @@bobdavis2689 You clearly have less than a high school understanding of Newtonian physics. The average American woman weights about 168 lbs and is 5’4”. A very sad morbidly obese statistic. There are literally millions of men who weight less than this and are significantly taller. The former is closer to a ball than the later. The coefficient of drag is clearly higher with that cohort of men compared to the average American woman. Secondly YOU’RE THE ONE who originally stated “all things equal”. Dude you’re turning yourself into a pretzel by refusing to acknowledge the fact that the male gender is the superior athlete. It’s almost as ridiculous as arguing men could deliver babies as easily as women when in fact men would die due to our different pelvic structure (and of course assuming the absurd situation from the getgo). Evolution of the human species was a race between how big a head a 9-month fetus could grow along with the race of the human female pelvis being able to pass that head through the birth canal and both surviving the trauma. That pelvic development and numerous other birth related factors compromised women’s ability to compete physically with men. Simple facts. Call me arrogant or whatever nonsense you want to because human evolution and science are on my side. Now in the gray wolf, in a well honed pack, young females are put in charge of running down fleet prey such as white tall deer. Why? They are faster than the bigger, stronger males who wait in ambush. In raptors, especially bald and golden eagles, the female is significantly larger than the male - stronger than the male. But humans are not wolves and they are not eagles. In humans the top males are significantly stronger and faster than the top females. Two cohorts making up 2 bell curves with significant overlap but where only males reside in the tail marking, the fastest, the strongest, the most athletic.
