Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) - unreleased Blackwater Park interview - May 12th, 2001

As we wrap up 12 months of celebrating Blackwater Park's 20th anniversary, I'm excited to share an unreleased video interview with Mikael from way back then.
Taken from outside the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, USA on May 12th, 2001, It's cool to be able to look back on this incredible album and hear what Mike thought about the new record, life on the road, and metal music.
Enjoy!

I love old interviews like this, they are like time capsules that encompass so much history in such short pieces. Just put this whole piece into context of the time: - their breakthrough album had just been released - they played their first overseas show not too long before this, before anybody even thought of Opeth becoming such a prolific live band. - Mikael still firmly calls Opeth a metal band. His ideas about the band's music would change in the next 10 years, for better or worse. - Bloodbath was still a fun side project before becoming a more serious band. It's all so interesting to watch with the hindsight we have now.

This is how he was when I saw them for the 1st time in LA for the tour. It was an awesome show as they opened for Nevermore on the "Dead Heart in a Dead World Tour" (r.i.p. Warrel). Mikael was very low key, not the stand-up comedian he's become. After every track, they were drowned in applause, and he would just say; "Thank you... Thank you very much" :).

I think he was exaggerating a little - but recordings do exist of at least half the shows they played on that tour at the point of this interview. All are here and ready to go - I just need consent!

I blind-bought Opeth's "Blackwater Park" and Emperor's "Prometheus" at a local Best Buy, based on all the word-of-mouth hype they were receiving around Internet message boards back in 2001, not realizing that the music was going to be so extreme, but I quickly grew to love that style of harsh singing, and those two CDs ended up being my introduction to death metal growls and black metal shrieks.

December 2008. It was in their setlist for only six weeks in Feb-March 2003 (MKII lineup), then all throughout 2008. But never since!

Yeah! They did something like 8 shows with Amorphis at the start of the tour in early April 2001, then took a couple of days' break and joined Nevermore for the following ~4 weeks.
