Opeth Interview
We had the distinct privilege of talking to Mikael Akerfeldt and Fredrick Åkesson from Swedish Prog-metal behemoths Opeth. Both guys are phenomenal talents and we relished the opportunity to sit in the backstage dressing room of the illustrious Barrowlands Ballroom in Glasgow.
We talk about guitars, writing, touring, inspiration, plectrums and longevity in an increasingly tough business. In the end we spoke for well over half an hour as the guys had so many interesting things to tell us!
We’d like to thank Mikael and Fredrik for their time and candour as well as Steve, Opeth’s tour manager and Michelle, Opeth’s PR, for making this happen for us.

Ironic how I can understand those swedish gentlemen better than the native speaker interviewer...

All you need is an interviewer who is actually interested. It shows so right here. Great stuff, thank you!

Interviewer was fantastic. Witty enough to carry a conversation, affable enough to put the musicians at ease, clearly did his research as well. Good stuff.

I've watched nearly every Opeth interview I can find, and this one is particularly nice. I like that it feels very much like a conversation rather than an awkward interview with all the same old questions. I felt like I was hanging out with the guys!

Mikael is like the proud dad, so many compliments to Fredrick. Beyond humble and great to see the love between them. Also Fredrick throwing out Skwisgaar Skwigelf as he sits there casually haha

"We once labeled our genre as forest metal" YES THEY DID! I remember it. Might of been an interview from around 2003 or something where Akerfeldt called it "progressive forest metal." Their sound and the fantastic album art might of been responsible for that. Opeth still has a bit of the forest in their music I think.

Oh the ever so humble Mikael. I was there at first row. He had a blackout during the solo but it wasn't that bad and the show was awesome. cristal clean sound and beatiful songs.

Mikael should definitely solo more on the newer records. Love his tasteful bluesy solos

Some of these interviews can be excruciating both for the interviewees and those of us watching, especially when you pick up on a vibe that tells you the musicians would rather eat their own flesh. However this one(along with the Gibson Guitar series)is very enjoyable as he(the interviewer),brings Michael and Frederick into the conversation early on and displays no ego whatsoever. The Opeth guys also have the good grace to listen to his questions in their entirety.Good stuff, thanks.

excellent interview, less than 10 minutes in and this is serious quality for any Opeth fan. So happy in the last few years to see Opeth getting bigger and bigger doing exactly what they want to do. Opeth changed my life my first year of high school, the autumn Watershed came out and they were definitely getting bigger by 2008 but the ride hasn't stopped! Opeth has always been about dynamic music for me, unlike anything else. Between Opeth and Pain of Salvation, Sweden really has a couple of special bands for the last 20+ years. (And I'm always ready to hear more!)
