Migrants Stranded on Kos: Europe or Die

Demonized by some of the UK's tabloid press and holiday-makers alike, VICE News meets the actual migrants labeled as "boat people" on the Greek island of Kos. Many of these migrants have fled the Assad regime and the Islamic State in the Middle East, only to be met with hostility as they reach the island's shores.
The Greek islands are on the new frontier of a major gateway into Europe. The eastern Mediterranean route into Greece, Cyprus, and Bulgaria from Turkey has seen more than 48,000 irregular border crossings between January and May 2015.
Kos, a small holiday island whose economy depends on tourism, is facing a refugee crisis right at the beginning of visitor season. Destitute people are sleeping rough or staying with hundreds of others in a small abandoned hotel lacking basic amenities, such as water and electricity.
While the authorities refuse to take responsibility, the migrants and refugees who want nothing more than to leave the island find themselves stuck in this desperate situation, often for weeks, waiting for the necessary legal papers to continue their journey to mainland Greece.
VICE News finds that the urgent issue is how Kos - completely unprepared to receive and process thousands of mainly Syrian and Afghan refugees that have arrived on its shores - fails to meet even the minimum EU standards for refugee reception.

    serge You do realize that the majority of refugees are women and children? The people that do not escape the wars in their country often end up dead or become forced into a lifestyle that they did not choose. So to deny any human being the right to a safe and secure life should be considered sacrilege. The main reason that the Moroccan's are so good at keeping people out of Spain is that they have sold their sense of human morality for money. The Moroccan boarder controls are actively contributing to the death tolls of the many war torn nations we have today. I am sure that these people would work and contribute to society if they were given the FAIR opportunity to do so. I understand the immense financial cost it would require to support such vast numbers of people, but there must be a better solution than to just let them die.

    J Berg Majority of refugees might be women, children and elderly people - but the Europe gets mostly "asylum seekers" aka paperless illegal immigrants who are mostly young men. Those same guys, who cause the problems and fight the wars in their country and then flee. These people should stay in their country and fix their own shit. Women and children are welcome.

    Jinppa I agree with much of what you say, these guys infuriated me with their display of disrespect for the beach and just littering as they walked ashore like they owned the beach. Then you show their camp and the guy starts whining about not be "given" anything while the place is covered in trash. Get off you ass and make your living quarters livable and you may quit crying about being alive in a wonderful environment...shameless and ungrateful should be greeted with no courtesy or freebies in my mind. Take care of your mess and then things may become better for you. No one wants litter and pollution in their country and these people were living like pigs. Did someone tell them it's illegal to pick up your own litter? Lost allot of sympathy for these people...especially the ones from Pakistan who just tossed all the litter on arrival, they're lucky they didn't show up that way on my beach, they'd be shark food!

And I should be ashamed of not providing you enough care.... SHAME ON YOU! Instead of standing against the IS they are running away and being a burden on someone else. I think the Greek government should care more about the islands locals

  • @billionbillion1864
    @billionbillion18649 жыл бұрын

    As a Greek I can understand the situation in the island. The local government and the mayor dont have the funds to support accommodation for all these people who have no choice other than to leave their home. However, the Syrian refugee talking in the video, points out a very misleading opinion; that the Greeks are not friendly and dont help the refugees. To begin with, many Greeks in islands like Kos dont have the money to support their own families do to the crisis and although they sympathize with the migrants, they cant help them in many ways. And as the video shows, some locals go and give them food, shoes and whatever else they can. Additionally, the refugees criticize the fact that the local police takes weeks to give them papers so they can travel. When you have thousands of migrants in an island, how can they expect that all of them get identified and get their paperwork in a couple of days? It is a common truth that Greek authorities lack proper organization but the refugees cant demand that all their needs are met immediately in a country that has severe economic and political problems.

The greek population droped to 5000. This is not asylum. It's the ethnical cleanessing of the greek populations from the island they inhabeted since Homer.

    There are plenty of refugee camps and facilities all set up by NGO's to support refugees from the Syrian war in Turkey, these people are not refugees, they are just seeking for better lives in Europe under their "refugee status". They were refugees in Turkey, and then they became greedy and chose to become migrants and leave for Europe. I love how that lady just demanded benefits there, totally symbolises their intentions. If I were a Kos local I would be pissed off with these guys trashing up the island, just sitting around, not doing two shits and causing trouble, even more so fucking up the main local economy which is tourism. As if Greece doesn't have enough problems at the moment. #Rantover

    Holiday booking site Trivago has reported that bookings to Kos fell by 52% in the first week of June since reports of the refugee situation began and are expected to go down further as the holiday season progresses. With government money already in short supply due to austerity (Something Vice conveniently leaves out) and the prospect of a Greek default by the end of this month, this influx of migrants has essentially spelt the death knell for Kos' fragile economy and the livelihoods of the majority of its residents. Expect the local population to turn on the migrants who killed their way of life very soon, more fodder for Vice's cameras obviously so they can generate more clickbait videos about the 'poor refugees' at the hands of their big bad Greek oppressors. Meanwhile Shane Smith is complaining to Warren Buffet about the service quality of his private jets.

    If you want to immigrate, do it the legal way: get an education, find a job, and get permission to enter. This isn't fair to the ones who come here legally, have to work for X years, and then apply for permanant residency, when someone who claims to be a "refugee" can just come and receive it. I (as an immigrant in the EU) think every single one of these people needs to be sent back, or put in jail.
