Zila, I saw your recent appearance on Waldo's World welding up the aluminum flatbed with the HTP-PP 220. I have an Everlast MTS 275 and want to try aluminum MIG with it. Aside from using the stiffer wire, teflon liner, bigger tip, and keeping a straight cord are there any other tips or settings you'd recommend, pulse settings, etc? I want to do 3/16 and 1/4" tube.

  • @ZILAwelds

@@oldowl4290 thanks for watching! The MTS 275 ( as far as i am familiar with the machine) does not offer pulse options/settings for mig …. That being said 3/16 or 1/4” is thick enough to weld just with regular spray mig.. i an not sure if you have a program in the machine or not. If you run 5356 wire ( the stiffer kind ) i would think a good starting point is 500 ipm for 3/16 and 600 ipm for 1/4” that is if you use 035 wire and 100% argon gas …. Stsrt with voltage at 22 ( go up or down 1 or 2 volts )till you see the spray cone, no crackling. A short and focused cone is preferred … If you run 4043 about 100 IPM LESS everything else about the same… 100% argon gas the higher the flow rate the better ( i would start at 40 cfh) Ctwd ( stick-out ) about 3/4” roughly 2x of what you’d do on steel short circuit mig ) Dont forget the aluminum drive rollers …. When it comes to drive roll pressure, less is more … just use barely enough pressure to feed the wire …. Always push the puddle. Never pull, always weld vertical up not down …. Good luck

Some other advice, get a couple mig guns and leads. One for mild steel, aluminum with the teflon liner, and one for stainless steel. Label them so you know which you want and just swap them out. Yeah it's expensive, but it'll save you time rather than replacing liners after each use. Especially if you are doing a multi-metal project that isn't just steel or aluminum exclusively.

It's a bloody complicated and expensive thing for someone to just dive into but y'all really put effort into it and even though I paid $4k for my welding foundation and work as a welder even I am able to learn from you. That's pretty sweet.

Excellent tips. I have been using all these tips on my 253 as well I have one small additional tip, don't cut the Teflon liner as short ,but make it extend as close to the drive roller. Just short of touching the drive roller. . I also use an 1/16 Teflon liner with the .045 /1.2 wire. I know a lot of people will disagree with that. I counter their disagreement with the fact I use A 5 meter mig gun with little to no problems Don't forget to use U drive rollers.

I like it for heat control especially at the beginning of the weld when it's at its coldest. It sure looks a lot better though. I have the same machine but have only used it sporadically. I bought 3/64 wire (5356) but was never happy with the pulse. Seemed like a lot of flare, like the wire speed was slow, any suggestions on settings? It would be nice to have the option to just set the volts, set wire, and set the pulse high/ background. Also... different topic, if you are not using new aluminum, how do you tell if you should use 4043 (silicon based) or 5356 (magnesium based), as the two are not interchangeable on some base material? Thank you for what you are doing!

I'm looking to buy my first Mig welder (as a diyer) but non did aluminium. Your tips convinced me of workarounds. They shall get laminated and putup in my garage. MIG WELDING TIPS 1. Make sure your torch lead is a straight as possible as the filler wire is soft aluminium. 2. 5356 filler wire is softer than 4043 wire so try 4043 wire. 3. Use the next size up gun tip for your wire as the soft aluminium filler wire gets pinched in the rollers and can become oval in shape which can cause 'birds nest'. 4. Change your torch lead liner to a Teflon Liner. Great video

Not an expert, but I would be willing to try. That aluminum will need to be as clean as abrasives and chemicals can get it. Drill a hole at the end of the crack. The crack will concentrate stresses in the metal at a single point, weakening the part, but a circular hole will distract those stresses over a larger area. Tack the sides together for alignment. Grind sections of a deep V-groove so you can get good penetration (bypassing the tacks). Weld between the tacks, then groove the tacks and weld those spots with good penetration. Depending on thickness and penetration, you might need to groove and weld the other side. Good luck! It may not turn out beautiful, but if it holds together it’s a win.
