I think they do make a point to show that the group in the film is a cult & doesn’t reflect the Midsommar ceremony on a general level. This is clearly an isolated religious cult.

I believe the production intended to portray genuine Scandinavian folklore to characterize the Hårga, and thus kept details like this theme away from comercializing it.

@@dala4706 In the story, they follow the Goddess Ishtar (I believe?), and back in that history as the dark one would be sort of like the maypole, and those seduced by it were forced to dance around till, yes, they died. Then the final victor would become the Maid-Queen! And, it also has a lot to do with the sexual desire of the young. Hope this helped!

midsommar was a really crap movie. a wicker man wannabe. lets stick a few sheds in a field that will be really believable and some over the top gratuitous acts of violence for the young teen audience. failed on so many levels was really disappointing.

yes maybe i was a bit harsh. i will give it another watch. its just i am of the wicker man generation, i absolutely love the movie and have watched it many times over the years. there hasnt been anything like it for years. then came midsommar , i was so excited for it as the pre hype was all wicker man esque. i think you have to believe that the plot can happen and midsommar just didnt feel believable not the story but the set / location. so i felt let down.
