She answered Carli Lloyd's bad-mouthing our national team with grace and logic. Especially when she said being happy at the World Cup does not mean you want to win less.

While doing so, she also carefully avoided being drawn into a personal fight with Lloyd. Interviewers sometimes like to promote that kind of drama and Midge didn't bite. Good for her.

@@outkast84 Lloyd wasn't wrong, she just isn't savvy and selective in her language. You can be critical & supportive simultaneously if you choose yr words well. She comes off as bitter and wanting to see the USWNT lose for personal disillusionment. Other commentators are able to achieve this, or coaches, watch how Emma Hayes talks to her players. The challenge is how can you be honest but still uplift yr players/peers?

The women on past team’s, when MIA. Chastain, Foudi, Scurry, etc fought for better play. The fight that women/minorities have to fight to be treated equally & w/respect. Lloyd takes that for granted complaining that her teammates were protesting for equal rights, gay rights, etc. she just wanted to play soccer. And now she is being a bit full of herself saying the current isn’t good. Well, Carli, don’t forget the battles fought by your mates, past & current.

The pay to play system is hurting the USA both on the men's and women's side of the game because unlike other countries the best athletes are still not playing soccer here because they can't afford to.

Honestly, its the same system for all our top sports. I grew up playing basketball and to play the best players you have to play in AAU which is just as expensive as paying club soccer.

She comes off as bitter & wanting to see the USWNT lose for personal disillusionment. Other commentators are able to achieve this, or coaches, watch how Emma Hayes talks to her players. The challenge is how can you be honest but still uplift & push yr players/peers? I view ex players as capable of being literal extended members of the system even though they're not on the pitch anymore. There is an unspoken inclusive insular loyalty that sorta is for life wether yr on the pitch or not. Look at Abby Wambauch, Julie Foudy, etc that's a family, a sisterhood. You can be brutally honest but follow with comments that get players to turn the eff up. Carli doesn't do this. She seems to get off in seeing them fail in a "I told you so" sort of attitude. How does that serve the squad?

The Football nations have begun to take notice. The USA could continue to dominate but not without investment at all levels. If the level of investment stays the same then the US women will fall out around the same level as the men. The amount of money invested in Football, especially in Europe is insane. Now that the women are filling stadiums the investment is increasing with the interest. Barca women routinely fill camp nou stadium. The money is noticing. It's not a fluke that Spain won the World Cup.

It seems more people are fixated on the messenger rather than the message. So many responses attacking Carli without actually addressing what she was talking about. Going back to the start, the whole reason USWNT is as popular as it is now is solely because of the success the ladies have had. They played the game for the beauty/fun of it and for national pride, NOT for the pay or social justice. Those ladies deserver as much, if not more, credit for winning the equal pay fight as anyone who put their name on the paperwork. Carli has been critical of the teams because she does not feel the new generation is as dedicated to the game and nation as they are to personal gains. She is not attacking the players but their work ethics. Some people get defensive and just retaliate out of anger. Some take the criticism and use it as motivation or opportunity to improve. As a coach, you have to deal with different types but the Champions are usually the second type.

Midge doens't get it about the development in this country. The rest of the world has caught up and, in some circumstances, passed development in the USA. Dempsey made the point that they pay to play system vs. free play and ways people can advance in other countries national teams is key. pay to play system is killing soccer here in the USA A) because too many club teams have a say who and who doesn't go and B) clubs care about winning over development. two recipe's for disaster and we're seeing the results

I honestly feel like Carli Lloyd needs to ask herself - what happened to her? Why is she angry and bitter at a team that is rebuilding. The team has a right to learn. They're not the same team as the past decade or before. And, her comments don't support growth, it's not supportive or do anything productive. I suggest she get some major therapy and get her own internal house in order. In other words FO.
