"In palace pub and parlour the whole of Britain held it's breath" Britain's greatest sporting moment. Before he won the title Randy was an assiduous trainer and it was this training with weights that gave him his Gymnasts build. He could bang with both hands, had a shoulder roll like Lloyd Marshall and his body punches broke ribs. When i was a an amateur boxer I'd listen to the tales about him from the men from his own generation including my dad and both trainers. I knew some of the tales were wrong but listened anway and no-on had a bad word to say about him. Im not a royalist but know the king was holding a banquet and wanted to be kept up to date as the handsome young boxer from the midlands fought the greatest fighter in the world. "Your majesty Turpin has won" said a lackey. The day after an RAF fighter flew overhead as the people of Leamington and Warwick watched the Licker with his mum and the 2 mayors.

Absolutely not intended to diminish the role of his technical skill and also clearly the hours and hours and hours he put in getting in reps over the years at the gym, but you can clearly tell that he was a gifted natural athlete with the speed he is able to close the gap from the outside all the way to the inside. You can't really teaxh that

Such a shame Randolph Turpin a rare case of a fighter who went downhill after becoming World Champion. He was never the same and as often quoted is his mother's statement about his return visit to the USA to fight Olson. "I don't believe he ever had any intention of winning!" Given the state of Randy's mind I feel sure she was right. Incidentally re the Olson fight. We sometimes see photos of Randy on the canvas but never any pictures when he put Olson on the canvas.
