A cool thing for my area is, Alabama doesn’t allow volunteers to have any lights period. So, the vol departments issue take home cars that are equipped with lights and siren, so they are driving an approved departmental vehicle to run code to either station to get trucks, or directly to scene. It’s a nice loophole to have, so they have much lower response times.

That would be really nice! I know a few departments have looked into that for the on call staff, but for the call volume the cost doesn't outweigh the benefits. Another argument was insurance coverage, however the department insurance covers us when utilizing our own vehicles for these responses so it was a non-issue. Maybe one day we could revisit that idea!

Very nice video. Haha the system down there is so much different than here. (Ontario, Canada). All we have here are ALS and BLS ambulances, all staffed by Primary or Advanced Care Paramedics. We don’t have EMTs here! To become a paramedic you need to go to college and take the Primary Care Paramedic course, and if you choose you can stay another year for the Advanced Care Paramedic course. For an ambulance to be BLS, it has 2 primary paramedics, and for an ambulance to be ALS it has at least 1 advanced paramedic in it.

That is really cool. I will have to do some more reading about how things are done up there. Having medics like that sounds awesome! Yeah even with only running EMT's down here for some departments, it is super hard to find staff. Paramedics are even harder to find.

Hi, nice work. One question, are you allowed to use emergency lights such a blue and reds alongside the bull horn? We have people called "Community First Responders" here in the UK who are first responder/EMT level volunteers who are monitored and coordinated by their local ambulance service and they do this similar sort of thing however they generally are not allowed emergency lights and sirens and must obey all traffic laws including the speed limit. However if they pass a blue light driving course (as we call it) or if they work in the police/ambulance/fire service already then they can use blue lights at least I believe.

  • @EMS916

Yeah, it is really similar over here in that respect. We have issued permits from the state that our department has to sign off on for us to obtain. We use green for EMS, and blue for Fire, but only in this state (Indiana). Every state in the country has their own laws.

Legit question! I am a supervisor on the service which allows us to respond to any call. My reasoning for responding to this call was that we only had an EMT and a Driver on this ambulance, and a fresh one at that. I was responding to back them up and more or less see how things were going. Turned out to be a relatively minor situation and they performed excellently! Thanks for watching!

What ist the point of having only basic life support Personal, when paramedics need to be on scene anyway? Is a paramedic a real doctor, with full authority over any medication?

  • @EMS916

    @EMS916

    6 жыл бұрын

This is a really broad question with a lot of ways to answer it. So basically there are different levels of emergency medical providers. First Responder is the starting point, then EMT, next is Advanced EMT, and the next is Paramedic. Emergency Responses are part of a tier system. First Responders get dispatched, along with our volunteer BLS ambulance. If the patient requires more specialized care or medications that we don't carry or are not trained in, we request a paramedic ambulance for an assist. Most calls we do not need paramedics. Our job is to get there and assess the patient and stabilize them, we can handle immediate life threats and supportive care. Sometimes the patient needs more specific medications or something that we don't have access to without paramedics. We also utilize med-evac helicopters a lot since we are in a very rural area. Hopefully this helps break it down a little bit!

OK, now that makes sense. Very different to how we run EMS in my state in Australia. Here all ambulances are run by the state government (not city/county), and are a service in their own right (not part of any FD). All ambulances are crewed 24/7 by paid staff (no need for volunteers), and is free for state residents. We don't have EMT level, only Advanced Care Paramedics and Critical Care Paramedics. All staff have a University degree in Paramedicine. Our governments pour a lot of money into our ambulance services, so even small towns get the same level of service as a big city. It's a pity every county in the US doesn't provide citizens with something similar. No developed country should deny the people top free health care, irrespective of whether you're a billionaire or homeless. Keep up the good work. I think it's great when volunteers give back to the community.

That sounds amazing! I have always been told that the U.S. is behind compared to other parts of the world. We utilize a lot of old equipment/small budgets/etc.. and we use volunteers. I'm loving watching your videos. I had a chance to visit a couple of EMS in the US (One in S.F.-a private ambulance, and a volunteer FD in rural Montana). While the US is right up there with many things, sadly it falls well behind other countries when it comes to holistically looking after it's citizens. Even our homeless and poor get better medical and welfare support than in the US. But I tip my hat to you and your peers. I know some US FD and EMS work with a very limited budget and hand me down equipment, yet you guys put on a smile, put on a uniform and go and do something meaningful for your community. If ever you're in Australia, I'd be happy to organize a ride along for you.

Do you need permission to respond to such critical things? I mean, you don't have sirens and such a thing like a cop car etc.

  • @EMS916

That is correct. We are allowed emergency lights per our state laws and you have to be affiliated with a department. Each department has an assigned area. We can respond in our personal vehicles with our allowed/permitted lights to assist on these scenes. Thanks for the question! Hope this helps!

Nice job on blocking the real Paramedics in.. Are you a EMT or a Paramedic or just a volunteer with nothing better to do I didn't see any equipment or medical bags when you got out so why were you there?

  • @EMS916

Volunteer EMT for the department that I was following. I didn't carry a bag because my personal bag doesn't have anything that the ambulance doesn't. It ended up being a refusal and we never transported a patient. Me responding to a call depends on who is staffing the ambulance, and their comfort level with running as the sole EMT on the ambulance. Nobody got blocked in.

Joe Smith someone's a little salty. Also in most places unless you have some sort of training (emt or paramedic) then he wouldn't be responding.

I have no clue. People of the internet can be crappy but I have a thousand positive comments for every single negative one. Not out to be a hero, but people like to see what we in public safety do on a daily basis and I love being able to share my experiences. My department is working on some projects for our community and for better involvement and community out reach, so if I have to deal with some negative comments, it is well worth it! Thanks for watching!
