    And in that particular scenario i find the Azden mic better because it had less "background noise sensitivity" which is useful when you don't want your computer fans or LED video lights (noisy Godox) to be picked up in the recording.

    Hi Griffin. Good overview. I consider a microphone to be my first EQ. In other words I choose a mic from my locker that best suites the job. (less post processing) First, I consider whether or not the mics polar pattern is suitable for the environment I am shooting in. A shotgun mic is great for outdoor venues but doesn't far so well in a room environment unless the room has been treated. For a room that has echo that you cannot control a cardioid or hyper cardioid pick-up pattern might be a better choice. Second, I consider how well the mic suits the talents voice. I will take the time to go through each mic in order provide the best representation of the client. As you have shown some mics are very similar sounding for a particular voice, other mics may sound drastically different. When purchasing a mic also consider the frequency response chart. It provides a general idea to what the mic will sound like. Of coarse recording gear plays into this as well. There are so many variables... Cheers, Greg

    Agree. The room reverb makes differentiation difficult in this example.

    I have THX certified speakers and I can absolutely hear a difference in the two mics, even without head phones. The Asden has a noticeably more muffled sound while the Rode is pretty clearer. Both sound decent for recording. And like you said, it depends on the space you are using the mic in and the voice speaking. I guess it oils down to the right mic for the room and voice tone. Great video!

    Great video and really good comparison and tests. I've recently compared a few different mic for on-camera use and I was amazed at how different 2 rode mics can sound, for example I compared the rode video mic pro to the really cheap rode videomicro and was shocked to find the cheaper mic is by far the clearest. Thanks for the time & effort on making this video.

    Thanks for the comparison, Griffin! The only quibble I have is you didn’t explore the downside of having a permanently-attached cable on a mic. Such a cable will inevitably fail at the worst possible moment, and in such a way that It goes unnoticed until a retake is impossible.

    Excellent point, Paul! Although I can't say I've ever had an XLR cable fail me. I think my 20-foot cable has been in use for 10+ years.

    Exactly -- me too! But I recently had an ATR6550 shotgun mic's permanently attached cable fail at the strain relief -- right where the cable enters the mic. If the mic had an XLR output jack, I could have just plugged in a new cable and continued -- but in this case, the cable was potted in glue, and unfixable without major surgery.

    Very informative! The side by side comparison helped to hear the difference. The Rode mic is just a tiny tiny bit cleaner, but it's barely noticeable and not worth the $500 difference. Plus, I think I kinda liked the cheaper lav mic over the expensive one lol.

    This was a very informative video. Thank you for making the comparisons. However, I still have to vehemently disagree with your old comparison of the Azden SGM-1X and the Rode. The part where you are in a restaurant could not have been recorded through the Azden but instead had to be through the built in mics on the Zoom H4n because that is the exact set-up I have and have never, ever had such terrible sound as you did in that video. Love ya, man!!

    I want to add that firstly the Rode NTG3 is a *RF biased* architecture and is also a *true condenser* mic. Along with better componentry and durability, The NTG3 is a much better overall mic. But, sound wise it's very difficult to tell the difference except the NTG3 has a little more bass boost to it. Love my NTG3's :-)

    Unfortunately the cable is the weak link of this microphone. The mic cable has very poor shielding and picks up interference.

    Wow, I noticed moving sparkles on Azden's black foam at the 3:36 mark. I think that's called moiré. (?) And it's only visible when KZread is set to 1440p HD. What causes moiré in the GH5 and what's the best way to eliminate it?

  • @GriffinHammond

    @GriffinHammond

    6 жыл бұрын

    Moire is caused any time two grids move across each other. Imagine if you moved two screen doors in parallel. The interaction between the two patterns creates this optical effect. It's often caused in cameras that don't use the whole sensor-if the sensor is 5,000 pixels across, but only 1,920 of them are in use to capture a full HD image, those gaps act as a grid that interact with patterns in front of the camera-like chain-link fences, or roof tiles. Sometimes it's not the camera's fault-in fact the GH5 does a pretty great job with moire. When you take my 4K KZread video, and set it to 1440p, you're only watching 44% of my pixels. Those gaps, interacting with the sharp pattern of the foam windscreen, is causing the moire you see. It's best to minimize it when we can in production-for example, avoiding tight-patterned clothing on-camera-but there's nothing I can do about other monitors and web resolutions introducing the problem on their own.

    The RODE mic has a better frequency response to my ear, that’s assuming you didn’t EQ either mic.

  • @GriffinHammond

    @GriffinHammond

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thomas Lidke, Yeah, no changes in EQ for either. My experience has been that the Rode has great frequency response-it's what I love about it. But this proved to me that for the kind of recordings I make, the difference is negligible.

    Griffin quick question, was one mic more sensitive than the other? For example, if you had both mics going into the GH5 audio xlr adapter, was the level(s) on the adapter set exactly the same on both? or did one mic have to be turned up more than the other to get equal level. Let me know . Thanks

  • @GriffinHammond

    @GriffinHammond

    I'd have to test again to be certain, but I do believe I had to turn the Azden up more than the Rode.

  • @johnpolchowski2171

    @johnpolchowski2171

    I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. I know from testing there is a HUGE difference between the NTG3 and NTG2. The 3 is much more sensitive than the 2 and when you turn the pot up on the mixer to get the same level out of both mics, the NTG2 is way "noisier" where the NTG3 is not.
