Thanks for the great comparison. Never expected both to bare a similar timbre. I feel that the U87 still bares more depth to the lower midrange and therefore sounds more meaningful on several sources. The VM1 has a very soft lower midrange which might allow a track to sit easier within the context of a crowded mix. It runs in danger of sounding a bit trivial on some sources. The audio quality is stunning though. I guess, it all depends n the application.
